You’re home with a new hip or knee: Now you can move with no pain, like you used to! Right?

Well, not yet.

You’ve finished the first phase. The surgeon’s job took just a few hours: Out with the old bone and in with the new part. You let that happen on the operating table. You didn’t walk out before the surgeon was finished.

The second phase will take longer: Natural bone grows into the new joint, like tree roots grow into the ground. The bone has to grow into the new part tightly enough to hang on for years. You need to let that happen, too, and not “walk out” on your bones before they are finished.

When gardeners plant a new tree, they put stakes around it to keep it steady. The stakes are loose, so the tree can move a little in the wind. Then the gardeners wait. They nurture the tree with fertilizer and water. Each day the roots get a little better grip on the new soil. If someone pulls or pushes too far on a freshly-planted tree, it comes out of the ground. The roots haven’t grown into the soil enough to hang on tight while the tree bends. The gardeners have to plant it all over again.

If you push or pull the joint too far, too soon, the new part will pop out of place. The surgeon will have to implant it all over again.

So take care:

Recover from Hip or Knee Surgery

Stake the Plant by using a walker, a cane and other tools, to keep yourself steady.

Move Gently, inside the limits of the stakes. Follow the therapists instructions.

Wait and Nurture with good food and patience. A little each day, the bone gets a better grip on the new part.
