WELCOME BACK Lent Term Event Guide
1
Dear all,
Welcome back to Lent Term 2013! Hope you
have had a wonderful Christmas Break!
Michaelmas Term 2012 was a successful term
for Afrinspire Cambridge Student Society. The
Society took a bold attempt in expanding its
variety of activities into speaker events. A
quick overview, we managed to organize two
fundraising events (doughnut sale and formal
at Pembroke College) and two speaker events
featuring Oxfam’s Duncan Green and two
Cambridge students on role of women in
Africa’s development. We also have received
positive response from our partner societies
and audience and requests for more speaker
events! Students are also getting enthusiastic
for more ambitious fundraising events. So here
we are, the Lent Term Programme!!
One key feature of our speaker events is that
we are going beyond the traditional hot topics
2
of poverty and inequality, and will be
examining several niche topics, such as autism
and social exclusion in Africa by Karren
Visser. We are also interested in hearing more
about personal experience from people who
have been working in Africa, hence we have
Robin Shawyer! Lord Rowan Williams, on the
other hand, will be examining the role of the
Church in International Development towards
the end of Lent Term.
For fundraising activities, we kickoff with a
formal in early February, and duplicate last
term’s success with another round of doughnut
sales in mid February. And finally, a cycling
trip from Cambridge to London in early
March! Write to us if you want to get involved!
Thank you, we look forward to seeing you at
our events!
Yours sincerely,
Afrinspire Committee 2012 - 2013

Speaker events
Autism in Africa, Karren Visser
25th January 2013, 7.30pm Bateman Auditorium, Gonville & Caius College Joint event with MedSin
One area of Afrinspire’s work focuses on social inclusion, and overcoming the difficulties faced by those on the fringes of society such as the disabled, the Batwa and refugees. We support many disabled people in South West Uganda. One of the major problems such groups face is stigma, especially with respect to conditions such as mental health, which in Africa are viewed in a very different way to the UK. Karren Visser’s presentation will focus on this and other issues faced by autistic children in Africa.
Karren is currently documenting children with autism in association with the Kenya Medical Research Institute-Wellcome Trust Collaborative Programme and Oxford University’s Department of Psychiatry. She and her colleagues in Kenya are also working on an illustrated autism handbook for parents and teachers that will be available in 2013.
