WHAT READERS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS WORK

    CONSIDERATIONS WHEN USING THIS WORK:

    1. There WILL be errors. Some are mine, some are not.

    2. Family records will NOT be complete, for various reasons.

    3. African-American records are more scarce than white records.

    4. Dates may vary, sometimes very widely. I can not determine which one is correct but instead I will include all references.

    5. Names can even vary, with some people using nicknames, or a middle name, when other names are considered “official.” Again, I can not determine which one is correct.

    6. There are virtually NO birth or death records prior to 1911 in Kentucky. There were several weak attempts prior to that, but very few events were documented.

    7. There are NO LEGAL African-American marriages prior to 1866.

    8. PLEASE use this, share this, add to this, make it more complete and accurate. But PLEASE give me credit for having written it in the first place.

    WHY?

I’ve been asked why a white man from Maine has become so interested in African American history and records in central Kentucky. Well, the answer is quite simple.

I enjoy doing family history research, and it doesn’t matter WHAT families I work on. When I moved to Boyle County, I found that much of the work for white families was already done, so naturally I turned to African American records, of which nearly nothing was known.

Gathering and assembling these family records, and writing a history of African Americans in Danville has become my passion, and my life’s goal now. I want to record every single African American who ever lived in Boyle County, so they will all be memorialized, somehow.

I don’t EVER want a young black boy or girl in Boyle County to be able to say, I can’t find out anything about my family or my history.

WHAT READERS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MY SOURCES

    CENSUS RECORDS:

When census records are used to extrapolate birth dates, the reader should assume that the date is an approximation, not exact. Because given ages often change from census to census, sometimes quite dramatically, I have listed all given ages in chronological order. In 1850, 1860, and 1870 Census records, relationship to head is not given; children are assumed only, they may be nieces or nephews, or totally unrelated to the head of household.

Also, it is important to note that if African-Americans are listed by name in census records prior to 1870, they were FREE, not slaves. Their numbers are few, but it is important that they be recorded and memorialized. In 1860, Boyle County had more free blacks than any county in the Commonwealth except Jefferson, Fayette, and Kenton.

If possible, names have been arranged into logical family groups, but in some cases, people are recorded in the original order. In cases where the head of family is female, either she was not married, her husband was away, or she may have been a widow. Early census records (1850-1870) do not give marital status.

I have listed families of which I know more than one generation first, alphabetically by the name of the earliest ancestor; the different generations are separated by a line of dashes. Otherwise, families are listed alphabetically by the father’s or husband’s name, or by the wife’s name if the husband is not known.

Dates for the various census years are, 1850-1900, June 1; 1910, April 15; 1920, January 1; 1930-1940, April 1. This is important because children under a year old were listed as, for example, 6/12, or 6 months.

Also, due to the handwriting of the census takers, it is sometimes unclear whether the birth month is Jan or Jun, Mar or May. The reader should not assume that births in these months are correct.

    MARRIAGE RECORDS:

Boyle County marriage records citing Book 1C were the “Colored” Declarations of Marriage; couples who had lived together as man and wife before marriage became legal for slaves, simply declared that they had been together a certain length of time, and were issued a “Declaration of Marriage” – in effect, a marriage certificate. Marriage records citing other books are legal marriage certificates.

Lincoln County marriage declarations are in Book 12, the explanation being the same. Other “colored” marriages are in various other books, as opposed to being grouped together in one series, as in Boyle County.

When marriages are listed beginning with “One” and a name (“One Jerry CALDWELL”, for instance), it is usually because there is no proof that the person listed is in fact the one on the marriage record; however, there is a great possibility. If I cannot identify the spouse’s family, I have placed those “orphan” marriages at the end of the family name section, unless there is only one record, in which case it is listed at the end of this file.

Marriage references almost always listed with the marrying couple, and in the interest of space I am gradually removing these references from the “SOURCE” section.

Sometimes, when the maiden name of the mother is unclear, I may have conflated it with the name of a second husband. Thus, “Robert and Mary (SMITH) JONES” might actually be Robert JONES and Mary (JONES) SMITH, with Smith being her second husband. In many cases, the record requires the maiden name of the mother, but even if her surname is different from the father’s, I have not always assumed they were, or ever had been, married. So when I list parents as “John SMITH and Mary JONES I have not assumed anything.

Finally, when dates for both the intention and the actual marriage are given, or are different, I have included both. If there is only one date, the reader may assume that the dates of the intention and marriage were the same, or that the intention was not recorded separately.

    BIRTH and DEATH CERTIFICATES:

Where I show exact birth information, the date is usually taken from the Kentucky Vital Records index. I am gradually adding this information to individual entries, and “(BC)” after the person’s birth year.

Death certificates, particularly the early ones from about 1911 to the 1930s often do not give parentage or birth dates (approximate ages may be listed), and even place of burial is often vague. In places, I am abbreviating these references as “(DC)”, but also at the end of the family listing, with the person’s name and death year.

Funeral programs, abbreviated as “(FP)”, have been a major source of information for many families; these run from the late 1960s to about 2014, with the majority being in the 1980-2000 time period. But again, the accuracy is only as good as the information the family provided to the funeral director.

    MILITARY RECORDS:

Many African-Americans in this area enlisted in the US Army at Camp Nelson in 1864 and 1865; some records of those enlistments are found under United States Colored Troops Muster and Descriptive Roll for Kentucky the 7th, 8th and 9th Districts, (cited as USCT Muster) which lists men in the 7th, 8th and 9th Congressional Districts who enlisted in 1864 and 1865. Boyle and Lincoln Counties were in the 7th District, and comprise pages 35 through 48 of the original records. When “in text” citations are made, the numbers signify the page and the line number where the record was made. If I can identify the man and his family, I have included the enlistments there. If not, they are listed at the end of the family section.

World War I and World War II draft registrations have been included here. Those for WW1 include all men from Boyle Co who registered between June 1917 and September 1918. Those for WW2 are only the “Old Man” registrations in April 1942 from numerous northern states, as the Kentucky records apparently have been destroyed. If I can identify the man and his family, I have included these registrations there. If not, they are listed at the end of the family section.

    GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS:

All dates are subject to error, and the longer the time between the event and the record, the more likelihood there is of error. Often, people simply did not know how old they were

  • African-American Genealogies of Boyle County, Kentucky, P 6

or when they, or family members, were born, which is why birth dates from census records sometimes vary, and sometimes quite widely.

If there is good reason to believe that particular people were connected, I have assumed that connection, but noted “probably” or “possibly” along with the connection. This is NOT to be taken as fact until proven with more evidence.

Even family names were spelled in various ways. If I believe the families were related, I have either noted “and vars” after the name, or have added parentheses to indicate different spellings – FAULKNOR, and vars, or HARLAN(D), for example. In numerous cases, I have assumed a multiple

marriage. If, for example, a woman 25 years old is married to a man of 45, and a child of 15 is in the family; it’s unlikely that she is the mother of that child.

When I only have individual marriage or death records, with no other family records for that surname, I have placed those records at the end of this work under “Misc. Marriage Records” and “Misc. Death Records.”

Finally, any entries that are highlighted in yellow mean that those entries require more work on my part. As I have the time, I will correct these.
