•Africans are in the majority at just over 38 million, making up 79.6% of the total population. •The white population is estimated at 4.3 million (9.1%). •The coloured population at 4.2 million (8.9%) and •the Indian/Asian population at just short of 1.2 million (2.5%).

One of the most famous people in Africa is Nelson Mandela. He was born in Transkei, South Africa on July 18, 1918. His father was Chief Henry Mandela of the Tembu Tribe.

•One in three people in South Africa don’t always have enough to eat. And one in five children doesn’t go to school.

•The country also has the largest HIV-positive population in the world.

•There are 2.5 million orphans. Half of these children lost their parents to AIDS.

Helping orphans and children made vulnerable through HIV and AIDS or poverty ~•Some 5.5 million South Africans, including 240,000 children under 15, are living with HIV. •Increasing numbers of South Africans are now dying of AIDS and most people (at least 85%) can’t get the treatment they need. •There are more than 1.2 million children who have been orphaned by AIDS.

•The most popular and most dangerous animals in south Africa are: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros.

•Every one of these animals has a reputation for pursuing its attacker with intent to kill.

•Perhaps the most persistent is the buffalo, which will ceaselessly pursue his aggressor, making hunting a life-or-death experience for the hunted and the hunter!

Nelson Mandela

•His full name is Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.

•He was the first president of South Africa.

• Nelson was born on the 9th of July, 1918.

•The South African courts convicted him on charges of sabotage as well as other crimes committed while he led the movement against apartheid.

•Mandela served 27 years in prison, spending many of these years on Robben Island.

Augrabies FallsSince 1966 over 20 people have fallen to their death while peering at this awesome gorge in the Northern Cape. In 1979 a Scandinavian was the first person to slip and survive.

Hole in the Wall

Many have attempted to swim through this legendary gap in the rocks near Coffee Bay off the Wild Coast. One local tried to summit the rock, but lost his nerve when it came to climbing down. For three days he sat hollering for help until a party of rescuers were able to bring him back to safety.
