• North Africa flourished • Islam and Muslim followers
• Rest of Africa was fairly unknown • Sahara desert
• Europeans couldn’t sail down the coast line of Africa until the 15th c • Lacked the technology to navigate the winds
• Vasco de Gama sailed for Portugal• Credited with sailing around the tip of Africa
and on to India

• Sailing ships brought technology• Guns, cloth, kettles, iron and mirrors that
Kings wanted
• The Africans had PEOPLE- • Healthy and hardy people that could be
used to mine and grow crops in the place that the Europeans were calling the NEW WORLD

1,000 slaves to Arab traders
• Slaves came from the conquered and captured during warfare
• Wasn’t based on racial superiority or inferiority • This developed in the America
