    JUNE 2013

Young men and women can gain both leadership and

trade skills by training at the URDT Institute

    Warm Greetings, Dear Friends,

Thank You! Together with you, we are supporting successful, African-led rural development. Our American

community is crucial to the growing impact of Uganda Rural Development and Training Program (URDT)

and African Rural University (ARU). We are writing to Inspire You to commit yourself further to our mission.

The transformative eects of our shared mission are rippling throughout the Kibaale district and beyond.

We need your help to increase the impact and expand the reach of these institutions and professionals.

Food was always scarce. Most of the time, our

staple was cassava. It was a very unbalanced

diet. Sickness had become a routine. At URDT

Girls School, I was taught how to improve our

familys nutrition, like having kitchen gardens

where we grow greens, avocados, tomatoes,

and eggplant, so as to improve on our diet.

We were taught to drink and use boiled water,

to reduce the spread of diseases like typhoid.

People in the village have copied us. They are

cooperating with each other to improve their

living conditions, too. Atugonza Faridah, from

It Takes a Child to Raise a Village, the URDT Girls

    School Book

Faridahs powerful story contains two fundamental principles that make URDT and ARU unique: mindset

change and a continuum of education and support.

    Mindset change in context:

Rural development requires a resource base of

people at all levels who serve as catalysts,

subject matter specialists, and energizers within

their communities to create lasting positivechange. The local people must develop a

commitment to fundamental change in thinking

and action in order to improve their situations.

We call this shift mindset change, and it is the

basis of all of the development work supported

by African Food and Peace Foundation.

We recently took a fresh look at our charitablegiving. To whom do we give, and why? We

wanted to see direct, tangible and near term

good being done with our donations. Once

we set this standard, AFPF went to the top of

our list. Every year the projects and programs

progress and we have the benefit of hearing

directly from the people who actually have

feet on the ground in Uganda. With these

considerations in mind, we decided to double

our annual gift to AFPF.Tory Lambert, Leadership donor
