TAC Cup’s rich history continuesWelcome to another season of Australia’s premier under-18 boys’ competition, the TAC Cup.The TAC Cup system again proved its value in developing elite-standard footballers in 2017, producing 43 of the 78 total selections (55 per cent) at last year’s NAB AFL Draft and a further 10 selections at the 2017 Rookie Draft .

Cameron Rayner became the first no.1 draft pick to come from the Western Jets and the seventh straight top selection from the TAC Cup when he was selected by the Brisbane Lions, with the competition having now produced 17 top selections in its 26-year history.

Further, nine of the draft ’s top 10 selections (including the first eight picks) were TAC Cup players – the most top-10 selections from the competition since 1994.

The Eastern Ranges produced the most draft ees of any TAC Cup club with nine players selected in the AFL Draft and one in the Rookie Draft , and Ranges Talent Manager Len Villani subsequently capped a memorable year by signing on as General Manager of the Northern Blues in the Peter Jackson VFL.

This demonstrates that the TAC Cup isn’t just about producing draft ees. It also has a rich history of advancing the careers of staff members, as well as developing its players not only as footballers – wherever they go on to play – but also as young men.

We wish everyone involved in the TAC Cup in 2018 all the best with developing themselves and others over the course of the season, this year comprising 16 home-and-away rounds and then a new wildcard round – when the bottom eight teams will attempt to qualify for the finals – before the finals series itself.

We also thank the Transport Accident Commission for their 27th year of support for the TAC Cup and continue supporting the TAC’s Towards Zero vision for a safer future on Victorian roads.

What will the big stories be in 2018?

To get the players’ perspective, we asked the captains or senior group members from the 12 clubs who they think TAC Cup watchers should have their eye on this season.

See their responses on the following pages.

Last year saw the Geelong Falcons claim their first TAC Cup premiership

since 2000, while 53 of the competition’s players graduated

to AFL lists in the 2017 AFL and Rookie drafts.

Wildcard Round introducedThe 2018 TAC Cup season will see the introduction of a Wildcard Round at the conclusion of the home-and-away season.

Wildcard Round will give teams from fift h on the ladder down to 12th an extra development

opportunity and the chance to qualify for the following week’s first round of finals.

While the top four teams take a week off before the three-week finals series (unchanged from last

year’s elimination format), Wildcard Round will decide the other four finalists in virtual elimination

matches between 8th on the ladder and 9th, 7th and 10th, 6th and 11th, and 5th and 12th.
