Jeffrey Shinder, an antitrust law-yer at Constantine Cannon in New York, told The Wall Street Journal he thought the settle-ment was a “mere slap on the wrist” and that it failed to ad-dress the main issue behind the original complaint - that the three remaining biggest carri-ers, United, Delta and the new American - could now potentially cooperate on pricing.

The DOJ said that low-cost carri-ers would be able to use the new

slots and gates for both direct and connecting flights, but Delta was quick to complain, saying other carriers should not be excluded from the bidding.

The question remains about how much competition will be creat-ed. George Hoffer, an econom-ics professor at the University of Richmond, said that “the DOJ was in an indefensible position. AMR-US Airways: The merger with few concessions Low-cost carriers to benefit from divested airport slots and assets

The $11bn merger of AMR Cor-poration, the parent company of American Airlines, and US Air-ways Group, given the green light last week after a lawsuit was set-tled, will create the world’s larg-est airline by passengers carried - with remarkably few concessions handed down by the authorities.

It ordered the two airlines to divest 52 slot pairs at Washington Reagan National Airport and 17 at New York’s La-Guardia as well as two each at air-ports in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and Miami.

But US Airways CEO Doug Park-er, who will head up the new airline, said that the concessions were “not material enough to offset” more than $1bn in to-tal annual savings and revenue gains. According to the Boeing Current Market Outlook (CMO), long-range, twin-aisle airplanes will continue to dominate the Middle East’s order books, reflecting the global network priorities and emerging alliances and partnerships of the region’s carriers.

“International traffic growth in the Middle East continues to outpace the rest of the world,” said Randy Tinseth, vice president of Marketing, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “The Gulf region benefits from a unique geographic position that enables one-stop connectivity between Europe, Af-rica, Asia and Australasia. Additionally, over the last decade, we’ve seen a rise in low-cost carriers that have benefitted from a large youthful population, large migrant workforce and trends toward market liberalization.”

According to the Boeing forecast, twin-aisle aircraft will account for more than half of the region’s new airplane deliveries over the 20-year period – as compared to 24% globally. Single-aisle airplanes, such as the Boeing 737, will make up 47% of regional deliv-eries through to 2032, while large airplanes such as the Boeing 747 will account for 10% of forecasted demand. Regional jets account for the remaining 1 percent of the demand.

Globally, Boeing has forecast a long-term demand for 35,280 new airplanes, valued at $4.8 trillion. These new airplanes will replace older, less efficient airplanes, benefiting airlines and passengers and stimulating growth in emerging markets and innovation in airline business models. To meet the growing demand for new airplanes, Boeing has increased production of its popular 737, 777 and 787 airplane families.

According to Airbus’ latest Global Market Forecast (GMF), Latin American airlines will re-quire 2,307 new aircraft between 2013 and 2032, including 1,794 single-aisle, 475 twin-aisle and 38 very large aircraft (VLA) worth an estimated US$292bn. Globally, by 2032 some 29,230 new passenger and freighter aircraft valued at nearly US$4.4 trillion will be required to satisfy future robust market demand. With GDP currently growing above the world average (3.6% per year over the last two years, versus 2.6% for the world) socio-economic indicators forecast that Latin America’s middle class will grow to represent more than half of the population by 2032. Be-tween 2012 and 2020, Latin America’s economy is expected to outperform the world average, largely thanks to Mexico and Brazil’s consumer spending. As a re-sult, traffic growth in Latin America in the next 20 years is expected to outperform the world average of 4.7% with an annu-al growth rate of 5.2%. A growing mid-dle class and increased consumer spend-ing have led to air transport becoming more accessible throughout Latin America in the past 10 years, increasing 14% in terms of total number of cities served. Still, while almost 100% of the 20 largest cities in North America and Europe connect passengers with at least one flight per day, only 40% of Latin America’s top 20 cities do the same. As a result, in the next 20 years, intra-regional and domestic traffic is expected to grow at an impressive rate of 6.3%, becoming the big-gest market for Latin American carriers.

AIRBUS FORECASTS FOR LATIN AMERICA

Fuel costs are expected to remain high in the last quarter of 2013, and the demand for air traffic is estimated to grow moderately. Due to the preparations already made for the pos-sible strikes of SLSY and IAU, Finnair’s turno-ver will be below the 2012 level and its opera-tional result for 2013 will turn to a loss. If the strikes are carried out to the extent threat-ened, they will result in further direct revenue losses of at least €60m and decrease Finnair’s operating result by at least €30m. In addition, unit costs excluding fuel (CASK excl. fuel) will increase from 2012. If the strikes are avoided, unit costs excluding fuel are expected to de-crease compared to 2012.

Members of the Machinists union Wednesday voted 2-to-1 to reject a contract offer that would have ensured the company builds the new 777X jet in Washington state.

The Seattle Times reported that machinists threw out the proposed eight-year contract extension, unveiled barely a week earlier, because it was laced with cuts to benefits. Many members said they refused to be forced into a hasty and radical decision under a manage-ment threat that they would lose future work.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes issued a statement from president and CEO Ray Conner after the long-term contract extension was voted down.

“We are very disappointed in the outcome of the union vote. Our goal was two-fold: to en-able the 777X and its new composite wing to be produced in Puget Sound and to create a competitive structure to ensure that we continue market-leading pay, health care and retire-ment benefits while preserving jobs and our industrial base here in the region. But without the terms of this contract extension, we’re left with no choice but to open the process com-petitively and pursue all options for the 777X.

FLYHT Aerospace Solutions reported that it signed a contract with a South American cargo airline for the Auto-mated Flight Information Reporting System (“AFIRS”). The contract requires FLYHT to install the AFIRS on 12 Boeing 737-400 and 12 ATR-200 aircraft. The airline is a cargo carrier with plans to be the dominant cargo carrier in the region with an integrated ground and air cargo operation. The company intends to use AFIRS as a key component of its paper-less operational strategy, which is de-signed to reduce total operating costs and increase efficiencies.

Middle East Propulsion Company expands product portfolio

Saudi Arabian engine maintenance company Middle East Propulsion Company strength-ened its position as a provider of military engine maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services for the whole of the Middle East region. Today, barely four years later after MTU’s acquisition of a 19% share in 2009, MEPC’s product portfolio has been continuously ex-tended. The Middle East Propulsion Company has expanded its module maintenance work by winning contracts for the RB199, the engine powering the RSAF Tornado fleet. Further-more the MRO capability for the PT6 engine installed on the RSAF’s Pilatus PC-9 and PC-21 training aircraft has recently been established and the company is awaiting certification approval for maintenance work on the T56 engine that powers the RSAF fleet of C-130 Hercules. This approval is expected by the first quarter of 2014. As a result the company will be in a position to offer full overhaul services for two additional turboprop engines. In ad-dition to this expansion, MEPC has been awarded with a follow-on contract of the Pratt & Whitney F100-PW220 engines for the Boeing F15 beginning November 2013. This contract was put on tender for the first time and was won by MEPC against strong international competition. The F15 has been the backbone of the company in past years.
