The O2 Arena (visually typeset in branding as The O2 arena, referred to as North

Greenwich Arena in context of the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics) is a

multi-purpose indoor arena located in the centre of The O2, a large entertainment

complex on the Greenwich peninsula in London, England. With a capacity of up to

20,000 depending on the event, it is second largest arena in the UK after the

Manchester Evening News Arena (MEN Arena) and one of the largest in Europe. In

2008, The O2 Arena took the crown of the world's busiest music arena from the MEN

Arena, a title which it had held since 2001 .

Following the closure of the Millennium Experience at the end of 2000, the Millennium

Dome was leased to Meridian Delta Ltd. in 2001, for redevelopment as an

entertainment complex. This included plans for an indoor arena. Construction of the

arena started in 2003 and finished in 2007. Owing to the impossibility of using cranes

inside the dome structure, the arena's roof was constructed on the ground within the

dome and then lifted. The arena building's structure was then built around the roof.

The arena building, which houses the arena and the arena concourse, is independent

from all other buildings in The O2 and houses all the arena's facilities. The whole

arena building takes up 40% of the total dome structure. The seating arrangement

throughout the whole arena can be modified, similar to the MEN Arena. The ground

surface can also be changed between ice rink, basketball court, exhibition space,

conference venue, private hire venue and concert venue.

The arena was built to reduce echoing which has previously been a problem in

many London music venues. The sound manager for U2, Joe O'Herlihy, worked

with acoustic engineers to introduce measures such as sound absorbing material

on the arena roof and the bottom of strategically placed seats to reduce echoing.

Despite The O2 arena's being open for only seven months of the year, the

venue sold over 1.2 million tickets in 2007, making it the third most popular

venue in the world for concerts and family shows narrowly behind the MEN

Arena (1.25 million) and Madison Square Garden in New York (1.23 million). In

2008, it became the world's busiest venue taking the crown from MEN Arena

with sales of more than two million.

The O2 Arena since its opening in 2007 has been host of many concerts, from

UK bands and artists to international superstars. The O2 was named the World's

Best Venue by Pollstar in 2009.

Anschutz opened The O2 Arena on 23 June 2007, with a free event for all of the

building's employees billed as the O2 premiere featuring Peter Kay, Tom Jones,

Kaiser Chiefs and Basement Jaxx, with the show hosted by Dermot O'Leary.

Snow Patrol then played a concert to an audience made up of sponsors, local

residents, local business employees and winners of an online competition. Bon

Jovi was the first band ever to play to the general public at the arena on 24 June

2007. Michael Jackson was preparing for a sell out series of 50 shows at the O2,

due to take place 13 July 2009 – 6 March 2010, when he died of cardiac arrest.

Rihanna is set to perform 10 sold out nights at the venue with her Loud Tour

which is the most by any other female. In June 2011 the cast of Glee performed

a series of concerts as part of their sold out European tour.

Described by the Sunday Express as '...the solo version of Il Divo...', English tenor Thomas Spencer-Wortley has wowed audiences with his powerful and charismatic performances.

Thomas has performed with the greats including Katherine Jenkins and Beverley Knight, whilst artists such as All Angels and Camilla Kerslakeare amongst his guests who have performed in his stunning concerts. Performances have been made in such diverse arenas as concert halls to London Fashion Week to singing the national anthem live on BBC's ‘Match Of The Day'. In addition to his concert performances he is also Derby County Football Club's official tenor and regularly sings at home games in front of crowds of 33,000. Following the release of his debut album ‘Credere' in August 2009 Thomas' career has gone from strength to strength which has seen his fan base, both in the UK and internationally, increase steadily. As Thomas has continued on his journey he has made some important links with like minded people who share his drive and determination. In July 2009, Thomas was proud to announce an official association with Steinway & Sons, to ensure that Thomas' performances are never seen without one of their iconic pianos by his side. This has allowed him to join the prestigious ranks of the very few singers who are afforded this honour. Thomas was born and raised in Derbyshire and then moved to study voice at Trinity College of Music, London, going on to gain a post graduate diploma and LRAM at the Royal Academy of Music. After working in music theatre it was evident that Thomas' classical sound was individual, a real blend of the operatic world and the ‘West End'. This left Thomas with a decision to make, although now it would appear an obvious step, he chose to combine the best of both and become a solo classical cross-over artist. Thomas' Story

Thomas has always referred to his life as a journey. You start out with your dreams and ambitions but like every journey, there is always an element of the unknown. 'I am extremely focused, and yet at the same time you have to be open to what the future may bring. ' Thomas has always been someone who attracts extremes, his life is both ordinary and full of adventure. Thomas himself says he could easily write a book on the many events that seem to occur on a regular basis. Indeed, every page in the book would be filled with stories of exciting achievements to the bizarre and comical incidents that befall him. His friends and family are certainly testament to the fact, it really does only happen to Thomas!

The Early Years Thomas' interest in singing began at the age of four, when he attended Sunday School at his local Church. It continued to evolve throughout his prep school years, where he developed a beautiful and unique chorister voice. Joining a local amateur dramatic society saw him broaden his experience performing lead roles such as the title role of ‘Oliver' and Louis Leonowens in ‘The King and I' and more classical roles such as Oberon in 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.

Page 17: AFC Greenwich e-Magazine October 2011
Page 18: AFC Greenwich e-Magazine October 2011

Both Thomas and his brother, Oliver, successfully auditioned for the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain and at the age of 14 Thomas was welcomed as the youngest member of the English Concert Singers and subsequently toured Australia and China. He remained an active member for many years, eventually being joined by Oliver and together they performed in prestigious concert halls across the UK, including the Royal Albert Hall, Barbican Centre & Symphony Hall, Birmingham. Thomas later embarked on a professional training as an instrumentalist, majoring in piano and violin, but through his study his passion for connecting with people always manifested itself strongest through his voice. ‘The feeling I get when I sing is just wonderful. We really are blessed when we can participate in things that give us real fulfilment'. Higher Education Thomas was accepted to study classical voice at Trinity College of Music for 5 years, gaining a Bmus Hons degree qualification under the vocal direction of Peter Knapp. It was here he began to hone his performance as a soloist in a broad range of works such as Handel's 'Messiah' and new contemporary musicals. His study next led him to The Royal Academy of Music where he completed a post graduate diploma under the excellent guidance of Mary Hammond as well as an LRAM certificate. His first professional break came when he was offered the part of Schlomo in the UK Tour of Fame the Musical, this saw Thomas travel extensively in 2007. 'It was such a great experience to be a part of the Fame musical, travelling is exciting but tiring. You learn about the discipline and resilience needed for the musical theatre profession and develop a healthy respect for it'. The Future

Auditioning as a young professional, Thomas felt at home in both the West End and operatic worlds. It wasn't long before Thomas decided that he would like to develop his own sound. 'This is my voice, this is how I sing. I am simply not a person who is content at sitting back waiting for something to happen, if you want something, you have to go out and get it yourself.' And so the idea was born to record an album, ‘It has been the most enlightening experience. Making music is just amazing, watching it grow and come together. What I have learnt both as an individual and as part of a team is invaluable. It's been hard, very hard, with all the control comes the responsibility of getting everything right. Producing an album on your own inevitably pushes the boundaries and presents what seems to be endless challenges, as it takes you way beyond the music, but at the end of the day I've enjoyed every minute of it' Thomas has done everything himself, he has set up a record label, Cove Records, and production company, TSW Productions. ' I've dreamt about being signed to a record label, only I never envisaged it would be my own! The possibilities are endless, he is unique in the fact that he not only sings but manages every aspect of the performance process. His creative talent manifests itself in producing, recording and marketing. He is as passionate about his musicians as he is about his own performance and places great importance on devising the programme for live performances in addition to finding the right blend of artistes to undertake it. The future looks to be a mixture of the unknown with the certainty that Thomas will achieve what he sets out to do and with the growing support he is receiving, we can all look forward to the excitement that the future may bring.

Terry Gill (AFC Greenwich Reserves Team Manager)

An Interview...

What makes me tick?

Football and more specifically Plymouth Argyle . Unfortunately my job takes up a lot of my time but i would love to be fitter and play more often as well, which kind of goes hand in hand I guess. Getting up early on a sunday morning isn't everyone's cup of tea, but do love it. Even all the other crap that goes with it, running a side is like a second job, i like to think the reserves is like a well-oiled machine, but even then the wheels fall off from time to time!

I like music as well, I reckon i could tell you any song within 5 seconds of the intro. It's my party piece; that and falling asleep in the toilet pisse d. I also quite like cider, which is probably my biggest vice other than the footy, and the reason I'm so good at falling asleep in the bog!

I was born in July '84, in Newton Abbot, Devon and my Dad was a big Argyle fan and I had that rammed down my throat from a very early age.My first game was in 1989 i think, pretty sure we lost 1-0 at home to Chelsea in the old second division (how things change!), and if i'm not mistaken Kerry Dixon was the goalscorer. I was sick off a pasty that day too, and didn't really enjoy it off the back of that! The following summer was when i really got in to football properly, with the 1990 world cup; Gazza, Gary Lineker, Chris Waddle, Terry Butcher, Stuart Pearce, Peter Shilton (who later managed Plymouth).......that was a great side. As a result, and i don't talk about this much these days, I used to have a bit of a thing for Spurs, but i grew out of it. Oddly I felt I was pretty much done with Spurs after watching Plymouth get relegated at Burnley in 1998; was a miserable day, but i knew that was me and Argyle locked down as it bothered me a lot! I used to go to Argyle pretty much every week; in fact i had a season ticket from when i was about 12 until I was 21 or 22.....interesting fact, I had a job covering them for a local paper while i was at uni, writing all the match reports, interviews etc.

As for AFC Greenwich, I joined after leaving my last side because I wanted to return to playing outfield, I'd been playing in goal more or less for 5 years and just wasn't enjoying it, I only started doing it as favour and ended up there for ages! I'm a bit of closet goalie, but I am rubbish these days, no doubt about it; the lads will back me up on that! I have always wanted to do my badges and run a side, so when Paul and Mick asked me to set up and run a Reserve side, jumped at the chance to be honest. That said, the doing my badges bit is falling slightly by the wayside, I have my Level 1 but i would like to have been further ahead by now in terms of qualifications if I am honest. It's something to aim for next season. Going forward I just want the club to be successful and progress into a big, local side, but in a structured fashion. I don't want us to be expanding at the rate we have done so far without a proper infrastrucure in place as it has a habit of taking us off flying by the seat of our pants a bit, as I'm sure Paul and Mick will agree. We have a solid basis here for decent, local community orientated side, and it would be amazing if in 5 years we could have an established Saturday side playing to good standard and gaining recognition in and around London and beyond.

FAMOUS FOOTBALLING INJURIES

During his spell at Leeds United Rio Ferdinand suffered a tendon strain in his knee...watching television! As his manager at the time, David O'Leary, explained: "He was watching television and had his foot up on the coffee table. He had it there in a certain position for a number of hours - and strained a tendon behind his knee."

Another player who found a television set to be more than a match was David 'Calamity' James who once pulled a muscle in his back when reaching for a television remote control. James also missed a match at Liverpool suffering from a RSI injury to his thumb which he blamed on his excessive computer-game habit.

*********

In the second League match of the 1975/76 season at Birmingham City, Manchester United's goalkeeper Alex Stepney became so animated in shouting at his own defenders that he dislocated his jaw and had to be taken to hospital.

*********

While at Southampton goalkeeper Dave Beasant missed 8 weeks of a season after a confrontation with a bottle of salad cream. He knocked it over and attempted to control the falling bottle with his foot but only succeeded in rupturing his ankle ligaments.

*********

When Manchester United were beaten 2-0 by Arsenal at Old Traffordon Saturday 15th February 2003 in an FA Cup Third Round tie Unitedmanager Alex Ferguson was not a happy man. Famous for his'hair-dryer' treatment of players this time he kicked a boot in a momentof anger. Not much news-worthiness in that except that the boot hit'Golden Balls' David Beckham in the face causing a cut over his left eyewhich needed stitches. It may have been a trivial injury but it was onethat then made the headlines the world over.

*********

In November 1970 in a Fourth Division match at Colchester, Brentford goalkeeper Chic Brodie suffered a serious injury when in collision with a dog that had invaded the playing area. The dog decided to chase the ball when it was passed back to Brodie - the 'keeper didn't notice the dog and they collided leaving the player with a shattered kneecap which ended his senior playing career.

*********

In May 2008 Rochdale striker Lee Thorpe could only watch his team-mates from the sidelines when they played their League 2 play-off final against Stockport at Wembley after having broken his arm in three places a couple of weeks earlier. He did it in an arm-wrestling contest with team-mate Rene Howe on the coach to the semi-final against Darlington!

Did You Know? Famous Footballing FactsDid You Know? Famous Footballing Facts

When manager of Partick Thistle John Lambie knew exactly what to say to his trainer when his striker Colin McGlashan was dazed and didn't know who he was -

"That's great. Tell him he's Pele and get him back on."

*********

An Italian playing for Grimsby Town is always likely to be a fans' favourite, especially when the player himself contributed out of his own pocket alarge part of the fee than allowed him to move from Serie A to Lincolnshire. But as popular as Ivano Bonetti was with the fans that earned no browniepoints with manager Brian Laws when he considered the Italian had nottried hard enough. After a 3-2 defeat away to Luton Town on Saturday10th February 1996 (just a month after they had beaten Luton 7-1 in anFA Cup tie) Laws confronted the former Juventus player about his lack ofeffort and the confrontation ended when Laws threw a plate of chickenwings at Bonetti, breaking his cheekbone. From then on the legacy of thatamazing signing by Grimsby was forgotten and just those chicken wings got the headlines.

*********

The joys of married life! In December 2004 when playing for Servette against Schaffhausen in a Swiss League match Paulo Diogo jumped on one of the boundary fences to celebrate a Servette goal. Not being aware that his wedding ring was caught on the fence he jumped down leaving behind the ring and much of his finger, the rest having to be amputated in hospital. And he was booked by ref Florian Etter for excessive celebration of the goal. Ouch!

*********

In March 2009 three-times FIFA World Player of the Year Ronaldo made his competitive debut for Brazilian side Corinthians as a sub after thirteen months out of the game following surgery for a career-threatening knee injury. He survived the 20 minutes he spent on the pitch without a problem only to end up with a badly bruised and swollen right eye after being hit by a microphone when a post-match media scrum surrounded him while attempting to get an interview.

*********

In October 2010 it was announced that French footballer Yoan Gouffran had an allergy which was a bit of a problem for a footballer - grass. His manager at Bordeaux, former Fulham boss Jean Tigana, said 'For a footballer, it's embarrassing'. Perhaps so, but thankfully there is now one footballer who won't be making intentional dives!
