Sixty Mining Engineering students

from the University of South Africa

(UNISA) recently underwent a Surface

and Ground Blasting Competency

Training Programme.

Facilitated by AEL, the three-day

workshop aimed directly at introducing

Mining Engineering students to the

practical insight of the mining sector.

The annual training and development

programme forms part of AEL’s

partnership with six universities across

the country.

Through this programme, students are

exposed to revolutionary innovations

in blasting technology through various

activities such as guided tours, product

displays and lectures.

“Above establishing and maintaining

relationships with our key

Blasting Competency Training for Aspiring Mining Engineers

stakeholders, the programme also

strives to bridge the gap between

the practical and theoretical side of

mining. This is because the skills gap

has been identified as the missing link

in the current engineering training

sector.

Furthermore, it is our way of

adding support to the key National

Development Plan agenda of

maintaining and supporting the

culture of learning and teaching,” said

Simon Tose, Group Consulting Mining

Engineer at AEL.

“South Africa is currently experiencing

a critical scarcity of technically skilled

people in the mining and engineering

sector. This obviously has important

implications for this sector and the

continued growth in the country,

therefore the provision of such training

programmes is of critical importance

as mining is one of the cornerstones of

the South African economy,” he added.

Third-year Mining Engineering

student, Tebogo Tshose said “words

cannot express the delight and

gratitude for the opportunities given

to us by AEL in partnership with the

university’s Electrical and Mining

department.” She further added that

tackling the mining industry with such

practical background knowledge, will

be nothing but a walk in the park.

The Blasting Competency Programme

is a similar training initiative, which

AEL usually conducts for its current

and new clients.

“AEL Indonesia has embarked on various projects to optimise drill-and-blast operations for its customers globally,” Carlos Paz.

The key to realising significant savings in drill-and-blast operations lies in investing in new technologies and solutions, which can unlock benefits further downstream in mining operations, says Carlos Paz, Technical Manager at AEL Indonesia. He spoke exclusively to Inside Mining on the sidelines of an internal AEL conference in Johannesburg.

“How do we do that? Every explosives company will be looking at its own technology and its commercialisation in order to be able to achieve that.

It is easy enough to say, but it is finding where the gap is with the customer, bringing it in from R&D, commercialising it, getting the people trained, and then applying it. The larger companies like AEL are looking into that.”

AEL spends about 3% of its turnover on R&D, which is a major driver for the company. “It is these R&D projects that differentiate AEL in the marketplace.

It is quite inspiring for the technical teams to see R&D push, especially as it indicates a singular commitment towards our customers,” says Paz. He adds that it is important to strike necessary balance between meeting customer needs and developing the technological capabilities of the company.

Latest trends in mining

Looking at the latest trends in mining, Paz points out that more and more companies are set to optimise load-and-haul and crushing operations.

“One of the key enablers here is drill-and-blast, where new cost-efficient initiatives such as electronic initiation and customised density products come into play. It also involves customising the energy of the explosives for every application. For example, it is ideal to crush metalliferous ore on the bench, which means you need to increase the energy level of the explosives in order to fragment the material before it reaches the crusher.”

“With commodity prices under pressure at the moment, in addition to the trend of open-pit operations being converted to underground mining as easily accessible reserves are depleted, we will see innovation being extended to loading capabilities underground. I think that is the next trend.”

“In Indonesia, AEL brings in skilled drill-and-blast engineers on bench in order to optimise our customers’ operations, starting from the drilling; with supervising and technical recommendations that can form the baseline to apply such technology. Usually one of the issues is if you go with the latest detonation technology,

More bang for your buck

but the mining basics are not correct, the outcome will not be as expected. One of the challenges is to get those basics right, so we can bring benefits directly to our customers as well as to ourselves, including increased safety on bench, easier loading and improved coordination.

Major coal exporter

Indonesia is the world’s fifth largest country by land mass and the third largest in population. It is a resource-rich country and is ranked globally as a top thermal coal exporter. Indonesia sits on the world’s fifth-largest reserve of coal and is positioned as a global top three producer of Nickel, Copper, Gold and Tin.

“Indonesia has a rapidly growing middle class built on a population base of 240 million. Its requirements for energy and materials such as cement and steel, the building blocks of an emerging market, will continue to offer ample opportunities for AEL’s growth aspirations.”

Ammonium nitrate plant

The successful roll-out of the AEL’s regional AN strategy (in Joint Venture with BBRI) of an ammonium nitrate solution plant in Indonesia will support the growth of AEL in select Asia Pacific markets. “It will allow us to offer integrated solutions, with huge benefits for our customers, as they will no longer have to rely on external supply, with international quality explosives closer on hand at their sites.”

AEL Indonesia has also markedly increased its uptake of used oil, with 80% of recycled oil now being

Carlos Paz, Technical Manager, AEL Indonesia

utilised in the manufacture of its base emulsion. “There are huge volumes available in Indonesia, with added benefits for our customers,” comments Paz. The used oil is taken from equipment, transferred into tanks and left to stand for eight hours, where-after the impurities are drained off and the oil is blended with virgin fuels. Cost efficiencies and environmental benefits are the results for all key stakeholders.

AEL International

AEL Indonesia is also capable of offering a one-stop service. “We are creating partnerships with some of our customers. We are running a two-year project with Leighton Contractors of Australia in East Kalimantan. It has become a great success, specifically in terms of improving the productivity of the diggers in overburden removal.

This partnership has enabled AEL to be seen as a premium supplier of

explosives and solutions and not only as a product supplier. ”

Blasting can be an expensive and highly technical operation, but the key to cutting costs is not by purchasing a cheaper product – it is by getting the best value for your money. AEL Burkina Faso regional manager Mohammed Elgharraz tells us how to get the best results at a reduced cost.

With mining companies cutting their costs and capital spending in an attempt to boost their profits and cash flow, Elgharraz has noticed that decision-makers tend to opt for cheaper products to meet their blasting needs.

“It is true that buying a cheaper product will save you money in the short-term,” Elgharraz explains. “But if it doesn’t deliver the same energy and results, you are going struggle long-term with ‘mine-to-mill.’ If you compare a cheaper product to a superior one, you may find that your dollar is buying you less energy and you are not saving any cost at all.”

Sufficient energy is key to effective blasting, he adds. “Blasting is very difficult. You cannot see the effort you need to break that rock. It is a huge and modern process and without the correct tools, you will struggle to achieve the desired result.”

However Elgharraz insists that “you can have

AEL offering customers added value through differentiated services

it both ways. You can save money from a ‘mine-to-mill’ perspective and still have the blast results you are looking for, often with even better results. The whole process will also become faster because you will have a significant improvement in fragmentation, milling grades and how many ounces you can get out of the mine using different kinds of products.” But how does one achieve this? “Well, technical support is essential,” Elgharraz adds.

AEL deploys established methodologies that present customers with a wide range of customised options and choices, all of which ultimately lead to successful blasts.

Down-the-Hole ServicesAEL provides down the hole services on the bench and on time, assisting in measuring holes products and managing quality checks during preparation of the blast. Application-specific explosives produced at the customer’s operation is extremely cost efficient, as it allows for total flexibility, as well as last minute changes on the bench to fit the different mine’s blasting requirements.

Prime, Load, Tie and/or Shoot (PLTS) Taking things one step further, while offering the same services as those included in its Down-the-Hole offering, AEL has raised

the bar with its Prime, Load, Tie and/or Shoot (PLTS) service, which addresses the requirements of customers that face resource and construction constraints and therefore require a solution to these problems without the need to hire more or up-skill existing members of staff.Opting for either the Fixed or Per Blasted Unit service, customers have access to AEL expertise on site for the duration of individual blasts.

Deploying AEL’s PLTS service empowers customers with higher levels of convenience as AEL’s technical teams of expert crews (all accredited to adhere to legal compliance regulations) become an integral part of the production, planning and blasting operations.

Using AEL’s full PLTS service means customers have access to hands on involvement on AEL’s part as their teams will manage the stemming of blast holes mark out and fire rounds and take on the legal accountability of the blasts, in addition to the services offered in its PLT offering.

Rock-on-Ground (underground and surface)For customers who wish to hand over the reins of particularly taxing blasting

environments, AEL offers its Rock-on-Ground service, which sees a shift in responsibility (in both drilling and secondary break scenarios) and costs to the AEL team. Customers can feel assured that they will receive a comprehensively planned and designed solution when they opt for the full blasting service.

In return for a cost per unit (using measurements of choice - cubes, metres, etc.) price, customers deploying AEL’s Rock-on-Ground solution are assured of:

• Effective blast preparation;• Thorough charging and timing of operations;• Stock control and security of supply (including ordering, control,

storage and stock management);• Labour supply (only accredited and skill staffers) to manage

charging and timing of operations;• Zero tolerance where safety is concerned; and• Dedicated and experienced AEL staff who adapt their skill sets to

suit the environment while enhancing it with these services.

AEL has been providing blasting solutions to the mining industry for over 120 years. This track record gives customers peace of mind to employ AEL’s full service offering that is tailored to optimise their operations for maximum benefit.

Safety is everyone’s business In caring for its people, customers and the environment, AEL is firmly committed to ensuring that all its activities are conducted safely to minimise risk to employees, contractors and the public. AEL’s annual Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) conference which was hosted in August is designed to advocate ‘Zero Harm’ in the workplace. The conference is a platform for AEL safety personnel to adopt leading practices and to learn about the management and reporting of safety and health issues.

AEL’s activities are widespread, and because of this, the group’s exposure is diverse, examples of which include mining-related and road safety issues, manufacturing of initiating systems, bulk explosives, chemicals and explosives, as well as general engineering activities. With 17 businesses in the AEL group, there is a strong focus on standardisation throughout the organisation and an overall alignment of best safety and health practices.

AEL embraces a safety culture throughout the group, and strives towards exemplary performance in the safety and health fields, including the development, manufacture, storage, distribution, testing, destruction and use of explosive initiating systems, bulk explosive and nitrogen based chemicals.

The conference heightened awareness and encouraged employees and the organisation as a whole to always ensure that our safety and environment switches are on.

The main driver for the Safety Day at this conference was hazard identification. Delegates were introduced to the idea of snakes and how they can be likened to hazards and risks that we face in our business. The cardinal idea was the ability to identify possible risks we face and how these can be mitigated.

Care and Conservation of the Earth

The conference also focused on one of AEL’s core values which is to strive to continually improve the sustainability of our environmental performance. This is done through the ISO14001 environmental management system. AEL ensures that its environmental policy, standards, programmes and initiatives are rolled out in sites in South Africa, the rest of Africa, South East Asia and South America.

As part of the SHE conference, AEL established an Environmental Awareness Campaign themed Care and Conservation of the Earth.

The Environmental Awareness Campaign was aimed at mobilising employees across the organisation to make a positive impact on their environment. While we live and work in different communities, it is imperative to remember that we face the same environmental challenges that ultimately affect the sustainability of life and the planet.

The objectives of the campaign were to:• Create meaningful and sustainable ways to

conserve two of the most precious resources; water and energy.

• Improve methods of waste disposal.• Employees took advantage of this opportunity

and presented fun and creative solutions in the form of multimedia to make a positive change at home or at work.

Entries were reviewed by a panel of judges and the winners were announced at the SHE Conference.

“Safety, Health and Environment issues within the Group remain the highest priority. We should afford these our undivided attention and ensure we have no injuries, anywhere under any circumstances.” Schalk Venter, Group Managing Director.
