The GTE is a plug-in hybrid variant of the VW Golf,

and the 5th powertrain variant available (though

CNG variant is not available in the UK).

Structure The body structure is the same as the VW Golf Mk7. However, this model features the hybrid rear floor which is raised to accommodate the battery pack. The GTE is only available as a 5-door model.

Technology

Trim levels : GTEThe GTE features a 6.5” colour touchscreen from the “Composition Media” radio system as standard to enable the additional functions of the electrified powertrain such as “energy flow display” and “e-Manager”.

LED headlamps are standard fit; the GTE can be recognised by blue trim finishers to the grille and headlamps, and 18” ‘Serron’ alloy wheels.

Interior trim is finished with blue stitching and the seats feature a blue stripe in the tartan fabric.

PowertrainsThe 1.4 TSI turbo-charged petrol engine provides 150 PS output. This is supported by a 75 Kw (75 PS) electric motor within the 6-speed DSG transmission. Combined output is 204 PS and 350 Nm of torque. Power for the electric motor is provided by an 8.8 Kw/h lithium-ion battery pack (this weighs 120 kg). As a PHEV the GTE battery pack can be charged from a standard domestic socket via a charging socket behind the VW emblem in the grille, or can be recharged on the move from the 1.4 ICE engine.

This enables speeds of up to 130 km/h on electric power only (“e-mode”) and electric range is up to 31 miles.

There a number of drive modes including e-mode (electric drive only) and “Battery Hold” whereby the battery energy can be reserved for a particular part of the journey, for example: entering an emissions-free city centre.
