2. A Brief History

  • Historically, people with EBD were placed in asylums

3. Movements began in the 20 thCentury 4. Council for Exceptional Children andAmerican Orthopsychiatric Association were the first two groups to lobby for the rights of the disabled 5. Efforts to help emotionally impaired began in 1966 with Project Re-Ed 6. What is EBD?

  • Diagnosis requires a long term pattern of the following behaviors
      • Unexplained learning difficulties
    • 7. Inappropriate or irrational emotions
  • 8. Difficulty with interpersonal relationships

9. Hostile, destructive, or impulsive behavior 10. Avoidance of eye contact 11. Hyperactivity, withdrawal, or depression 12. Requires unusual amount of time to complete tasks 13. Prevalence of EBD

  • Affects more boys than girls

14. 2-3% of population are diagnosed 15. Low socioeconomic status more likely to be diagnosed 16. African American students are more than 5 times more likely to be diagnosed than other races 17. EBD and Education

  • Behavior is maintained through either attention or escape

18. Students typically have below average IQ score 19. Difficult for diagnosis to occur and for students to receive services 20. Does not include socially mal-adjusted 21. Special Needs of StudentsDiagnosed with EBD
