GUIDELINES FOR PREPARING YOUR APPLICATION

In order to be considered for a secondary licensure program, please prepare and submit your application o n l i n e to the College of Education by February 1. Your submission should include the following documentation. 1. RÉSUMÉ Prepare a 1-2 page resume that provides contact information, teaching field/endorsement, educational achievement, employment record, and your community and extra-curricular experience. Your resume represents you as a professional. We encourage you to seek guidance in producing a professional looking resume.

Heading. Begin your resume with the following information: • Your name • Current address • Phone number where you can be reached • Email • Banner ID Teaching Field/Endorsement. Select a teaching field or endorsement in one of the following state approved content areas: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Economics, & Government (Social Studies), and Modern, Classical and Native Language (e.g., Choose one: French, Spanish, German, etc.) Educational Achievement. List the following: • Overall grade point average (2.5 minimum) • Grade point average in major (2.5 minimum) • Academic honors or awards you have received Employment Record. List 3 most recent jobs, including summer employment and military service. For each job, provide: • Dates and duration of employment (beginning with most recent) • Employer's or company's name • A brief description of the position you held Community and/or Extra-Curricular Experience. List up to three recent extra- curricular and/or community activities in which you have participated. For each activity, provide: • Dates and duration of activity (most recent to least recent)

• The sponsor of the activity • A brief description of your role

Awards or special recognition you have received. List and provide dates.

2. ADVISEMENT FORM

You will meet with your COE advisor, and they will evaluate your courses to determine what requirements you have met using an advisement form for your selected teaching field. 3. ADVISEMENT TRANSCRIPT Upload an official transcript of all courses taken at a university. For UNM courses, an unofficial transcript is acceptable. This can be obtained from the UNM One Stop Center or LOBOWEB. For transfer credits from other institutions, request a Lobo Trax Degree Audit (also on LOBOWEB). 4. PERSONAL ESSAY Write a one page personal essay in which you describe a profound learning that you have had, either in or out of school. Explain how this experience might influence you as a teacher. 5. ACADEMIC WRITING SAMPLE Upload a sample of academic work in the area you want to teach. It could be a paper, project, report, etc. Provide a brief description of the purpose and content of the writing sample. 6. LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION Obtain and upload three letters of recommendation which describe your qualities as a learner and potential teacher. Choose individuals who are familiar with your personal, interpersonal, and academic abilities. 7. REPORTS OF SCORES ON THE NEW MEXICO TEACHER ASSESSMENTS

Take the Basic Skills section of the New Mexico Teacher Assessments. Upload a report of your scores or a copy of your registration receipt if your scores have not yet been reported to you.

8. BACKGROUND INFORMATION FORM This will be completed in online. 9. DEMOGRAPHIC FORM The Demographic Form provides important data for the College of Education. The information you provide will be confidential and will not be used to make a decision about your admission. This will be completed online. 10. INTERVIEW You will be assigned a time to meet with secondary faculty for an interview when you submit your application. The interview is part of the review process for admission to the secondary program.

Criteria for Admission • General knowledge, as evidenced by a passing score on the Basic Skills section of the New Mexico Teacher Assessments, your transcript(s), and your overall Grade Point Average (GPA).

• Enthusiasm for and understanding of your content specialty, as evidenced by your transcript(s), teaching field/endorsement GPA, and academic writing sample. • Ability to express and conduct yourself professionally, as evidenced by your resume, personal essay and interview. • Applicants must be within six credits of completing general education requirements, teaching field/endorsement requirements and pre-professional education requirements. (Note: Admission to the secondary licensure program is competitive and not all who qualify are accepted. Acceptance is based on program capacity, especially in the availability of placements in each of the teaching field/endorsement areas.)

Final Checklist Please double check to make sure that you have prepared all of the necessary documentation and arrange all of your documentation in the following order: Program Evaluation – you will meet with your COE Advisor, and they will complete this online. Resume (Please double check to make sure you have all of the required components: Heading, Professional Goal, Education Achievement, Employment Experience, Community and/or Extracurricular Experience). Personal Essay Report of Scores on the Basic Skills section of the New Mexico Teachers Assessments Background Information Form Demographics Form Three Letters of Recommendation Applications are due on or before February 1st for fall semester.

After You Are Accepted After you are accepted into a secondary education program, it is your responsibility to work with your advisor and other faculty to meet program and licensure requirements. You are expected to maintain a 2.5 overall GPA and a 2.5 GPA in your endorsement area.

How to complete your College of Education admission application in TK20 The instructions for the online portion of the application are as follows. You will notice that we have provided the full application packet for you to reference as you work through the online forms. Be sure to read the packet entirely so your application for admission will be complete.

1.Go to the following URL: http://coeunm.tk20.com

2.Click on the “Admissions” tab

3. Click on the “Click here to create your account”:

4. Complete the form to create an account in Tk20, be sure to fill out all fields, then scroll to the bottom and click on “Create Account”

Note: Your log-in credentials will be displayed in the window, you will use this to log-in to Tk20

When your account is successfully created, you will see this screen:

5. Your username will be automatically displayed enter in your password you just created, click on Login

6. Once you login you will start the application process, by clicking on “Create New Application”

7. For Secondary Education BA you will need to start with “TED: Secondary Education BA (Program Evaluation) Fall 2013”. In order to complete this form you will need to set up an appointment with your COE Advisor first. To set up an appointment follow the link: http://coe.unm.edu/administration/facilities/center-student-success/student-advisement/schedule-an-advising-appointment.html

Once you have set up your appointment select “TED: Secondary Education BA (Program Evaluation) Fall 2013” then click on “Continue”

8. Complete the form in its entirety. If you wish to save and come back later, click on “Save”; If you are ready to submit for review, click on “Submit”; IMPORTANT: If you click on “Submit” you will not be able to come back to it for review, it will close at this time.

You will then repeat steps 6-8. You will select the following application: “TED: Secondary Education BA Fall 2013” then click on “Continue”
