H oliday season is engagement season.
But after he pops the question and
she says “yes,” the reality of wedding
planning sets in — and that feeling of joyful
romance can fade as quickly as Christmas
lights on an overloaded circuit. Here are the
top five questions you will need to answer to
make your wedding planning journey a pleas-
ant experience.
“After Valentine’s Day, the holidays are
the most popular time of year for couples to
become engaged,” says wedding planning ex-
pert Raymond Miller of MyWeddingRecep-
tionIdeas.com, a leading online resource for
brides seeking unique wedding favors, deco-
rations and gifts. “Many brides-to-be who
get engaged over the holidays will begin their
planning efforts in the first months of the new
year. Knowing where to start can be over-
whelming.”
Brides should begin their planning by an-
swering five basic questions, Miller advises.
You’re engaged! Now what? The top 5 wedding planning questions to answer first

1. What is our budget? “Funding your
wedding can be one of the most expensive un-
dertakings you’ll tackle in your life together
as a couple,” Miller says. “Many couples only
spend more on buying a house or car, or fund-
ing their children’s college educations.” Set-
ting — and sticking to — a budget for your
wedding is an essential step toward starting
your married life on a sound, financial foot-
ing. Determine where your funding will come
from — if your parents can help or if you’ll be
paying on your own — and decide how much
you can afford to spend without going into
debt.
2. What season works? Virtually as soon
as you announce you’re engaged, people start
asking what the wedding date will be. To make
answering that question as simple as possible,
start by considering in what season you would
like to be married. Would you prefer a spring
ceremony? Or do you dream of a holiday wed-
ding? By narrowing down the season, and
selecting it well in advance, you’ll be able to
secure a date that will work for everyone.
3. Where do we want to get mar-ried and have our reception? Will you
have a destination wedding? Or do you want
to keep it local? While wedding planning is
usually most successful when done well in
advance, if you’re interested in a destination
wedding, planning far ahead is essential. Pop-
ular destinations book quickly in prime wed-
ding seasons, and you may find venues in the
destination of your choice are booked a year or
more in advance.
4. What kind of venue do you want?
Do you dream of a big church wedding? Or
saying your “I do’s” in a beautiful natural set-
ting? Perhaps you want your reception to be
in a grand hotel. Knowing the type of venue
you desire will help you refine your options
and choose a specific location down the road.
5. Who do you want to officiate? Is it
important to you to be married by your own
church’s minister? Or are you OK with a jus-
tice of the peace? Do you fantasize about being
joined in marriage by a ship’s captain? Or does
your mother have her heart set on seeing you
married by the rabbi who was there at your bat
mitzvah? Just as popular venues book quickly,
favorite officiants also have their dance cards
fill fast for popular wedding seasons. As soon
as you know who you would like to officiate at
your wedding, it might pay to approach him
or her and find out about future availability.
“Of course there are many, many things to
consider when planning a wedding,” Miller
says. “But these five points are the basics you
must address, and everything else about your
wedding will be planned around your answers
to these questions. Once you’ve made these
initial decisions, it will be easier to refine your
options and decide exactly what will make
your wedding wonderful, memorable and per-
fect for you.” For more wedding planning reception ideas

W ill you raise your kids with a par-
ticular religion, will you both
register with the same political
party and how will you arrange reception
seating to ensure your new mother-in-law is
content with who is at her table and where she
will sit? Getting married generates no short-
age of opportunities to have important con-
versations with your spouse-to-be.
Maybe you can postpone or even dodge
altogether some of those talks, but at least
one potentially challenging conversation can
actually help ensure your marital bliss down
the road — the talk about finances. Numer-
ous polls and studies have shown that money
is one of the top reasons couples fight, that it
generates more stress in a marriage than al-
most any topic other than children and is a de-
ciding factor in a large percentage of breakups.
Making sure you’re both on the same fi-
nancial page before the wedding can help en-
sure that post “I do” money talks will be less
divisive and stressful. And, the good news is
that establishing a sound financial footing for
the future is not nearly as complicated as you
might fear.
The financial experts at SBLI USA Mutual
Life Insurance Company offer some advice:
Start with a budget
If you’ve lived alone as a single for a while, you
may already have your own budget, but now
you are balancing income and expenses for
two people. If you combine your income and
expenses, you’ll need to combine your budgets
too.

every month, taking into account housing,
food, utilities, transportation, student loans,
credit card balances, car payments, taxes and
nonessential spending. Next, consider what
your financial goals are — do you want to save
for a down payment on a house? Are you con-
tent to rent and instead focus on paying down
revolving debt? Once you determine what
your shared goals are, you can adjust your bud-
get accordingly, reducing spending on nones-
sential items and focusing on spending that
moves you toward your overall financial goal.
Establish an emergency fund
One reason so many families and couples suf-
fered greatly in this recession was because they
had little or no emergency funds set aside. An
emergency fund helps ensure that you and
your partner are secure should something hap-
pen, like one of you loses a job or experiences
a serious health issue. Agree on how much you
want to save for “a rainy day;” experts advise
you should save 5 to 10 percent of your in-
come in a joint savings account.
Pay yourself first by having cash for your
emergency fund directly withdrawn from
your paycheck or checking account and de-
posited in your savings account. Aim to accrue
three to six months of living expenses in your
emergency fund.
Life insurance is crucial
If you’re young, single, in good health and
debt-free, you may not need life insurance.
For virtually everyone else, and especially
newlyweds who have taken on new responsi-
bilities and often new debt, life insurance is
a must, experts agree. Life insurance can give
you peace of mind that your loved ones will
have sufficient money to take care of them-
selves should anything happen to you — and
it’s affordable. To learn how to create a bud-
get, to access a variety of financial tools or to
learn more about life insurance go to www.
sbliusa.com. For a free, no-obligation quote
go to pg.sbliusa.com/specialoffer/ppc/mat/
or call (866) 331-3078 to speak with an SBLI
USA representative. Even better, visit www.
sbliusa.com to complete the entire application
process — from quoting, to paying — online
today.
Make a plan — together
Write down your mutual financial goals. Your
plan should be specific and realistic, listing
the actual steps you will take to achieve your
goals, including buying a home, starting a fam-
ily, taking vacations and saving for retirement.
Decide what additional investments you’ll
make apart from your regular savings, such
as maximizing your 401(k) or IRA contribu-
tions.
Be sure to include tracking your expense
and income, as well as your tax burden, in
your overall plan. Decide what tax filing status
will be best for you, and consult a tax advisor
if you’re not sure.
Reduce debt
Credit card debt is the top obstacle to a secure
financial future and a major stressor in a mar-
riage. Knowing your credit scores is essential;
check them annually with all three major
credit bureaus. Scrutinize your reports and
correct any errors that could affect your abil-
ity to get a loan at a desirable interest rate in
the future.
Money talk doesn’t have to be difficult.
With a little strategy and the right attitude,
you can build the financial security you need
to secure a successful, happy life together.

E ngagement season is right around the corner, and that means one thing — wedding planning. Spring is crunch time for millions of couples planning their summer wed-
ding, but what many couples don’t know is that there are easy ways to avoid stress while planning their big day.
Turn your dream into realityYour wedding day is one of the most important days of your life, and it’s most likely a day you’ve spent hours, days or even years dreaming about. When the time finally comes to start planning the big day, you don’t want to cut corners or settle for a run-of-the-mill, impersonal event. With the help of the American Rent-al Association (ARA) and your local rental store, you can be sure your wedding day will be one that will be remembered by all.
Rental opens the doors to options you may have never even considered due to time or budget constraints. A romantic outdoor wedding is possible any time of the year with huge tents and elegant canopies, equipped with heating or cooling options. Make a statement by skipping the traditional tiered cake and going with something more unique, like an impres-sive chocolate fountain with brownie or cheesecake bites or an ice cream cart complete with all the fixings. You can even create dramatic scenery on the walls and ceiling of your venue with a variety of accent lighting options.
Don’t break the bankWhile your wedding day may be the most important day of
your life, there is no reason why it has to be the most expensive. You can save money on seating, centerpieces and more by rent-ing. Why buy all your wedding supplies when you are only go-ing to use them once? Why bother paying for their storage and upkeep after the big day is over? Simplify your wedding and your budget by letting the rental store take care of the cleanup, maintenance and storage of all your decorations and supplies.
And forget about running all over town, wasting time, en-ergy and money — make one stop at your local rental store and get everything you need. ARA members, which include more than 7,500 rental businesses and 1,100 manufacturers and sup-pliers, are located in every state, so you can get all the supplies you need in one stop. To make finding the rental store nearest you even easier, ARA offers RentalHQ.com, the world’s larg-est and most comprehensive rental store locator. Here, people planning their wedding and reception can find the rental store nearest them, read how-to tips and get ideas and inspiration for their event.
Enlist the expertsTo make planning your big day even easier, some ARA mem-ber rental businesses offer Certified Event Rental Professionals (CERPs). And most offer on-site support, relieving much of the stress associated with planning a wedding. These profes-sionals are ready and willing to share their knowledge and experience with you, from pre-wedding set-up all the way through the day of the event.
Deadlines, budgets, guest lists — these are all aspects of a wedding that need to be managed and sometimes are better left to the professionals. CERPs know what needs to be orga-nized right away, and what can wait until later. They will think of that one detail that never would have crossed your mind and keep your budget in check.
Enlisting the help of a CERP will not only ease the stress and tension of planning an entire wedding, but it will also ensure that the wedding you always envisioned is the one you will remember for years to come. From the latest trends and themes, to innovative budget saving strategies, CERPs know the ins and outs of planning a wedding.
Don’t let planning your wedding cast a cloud over the springtime sunshine. Make it an enjoyable experience with the help of ARA and your local rental store.

Y our dear friend or sister announces she’s engaged. She wants you to be
her maid of honor. It goes without saying, you’re thrilled for her. But
does this mean you’ll have to plan at least one bridal shower? Not to
mention, wear a dress not of your own choosing and find the perfect gift?
If the bridal shower causes you the most anxiety, help is on the way. Kend-
all McFarland, director of product and recipe development at Simply Organic,
suggests cutting down on stress with these time-saving tips to host a simple but
sensational shower for the bride.
Accept help. When the bride’s mother or other guests ask if they can bring
anything, say yes. Ask them to bring something you don’t especially enjoy pre-
paring or something you know is that person’s specialty, which the bride really
loves. Or have each guest bring a dessert or appetizer, so you can focus solely on
the rest of the party and fun. Offers to help are gifts, so allow other bridesmaids
or friends to assist if they offer. Working together can add to the shower fun and
give you stories to share as you continue down the wedding day road.
Go the healthy route. The bride, her bridesmaids and the mother of the
bride all want to fit into their dresses when the big day finally arrives. The most
thoughtful meal you can offer your guests is a delicious and healthful one. Pro-
vide great-tasting, nutritious snacks that go easy on salt, fat, sugar and other
potentially unhealthy ingredients, and your guests will fondly remember your
hospitality.
Remake everyday favorites. Great dishes don’t require hours in the kitchen.

Make your easy-to-prepare favorites and dress them up with
special festive seasonings. Try distinctive seasoning blends like
curry or Italian seasoning, or even seasoned sugar combina-
tions like lemon sugar or cinnamon sugar for a gourmet touch.
For example: Add a liberal dose of a spice like oregano, basil or
cayenne (or an herbal seasoning blend) along with some garlic
and Parmesan cheese to your usual mashed potatoes, and you’ll
instantly serve something out of the ordinary.
Use clever shortcuts. For inviting flavor without fuss, keep
a supply of natural dressing and dip mixes on hand for fresh,
homemade appetizers and snacks. Add a dip or dressing mix,
such as creamy dill, French onion, guacamole or ranch to equal
parts of low-fat cottage cheese and non-fat plain yogurt and
mix in a blender or food processor until smooth. Serve with
fresh veggies you can buy already cleaned and cut up at the
store.
Plan and shop wisely. Don’t exhaust yourself shopping.
Outline your menu — including impromptu snacks — ahead
of time. Then pick up everything non-perishable at the same
time, eliminating last-minute sprints to the grocery store.
Don’t panic if your grocer is missing that key spice ingredient
since it’s easier than ever to order online. For example, Simply
Organic carries culinary items like organic spices, seasoning
blends, baking extracts and flavors, gluten-free baking mixes
and other cooking ingredients and supplies — which they will
ship to you within a few days of your order.

A n enduring Victorian tradition steeped in superstitious sym-
bolism, the verse containing a series of old, new, borrowed
and blue good luck tokens for the bride dates back centuries
in England.
John C. Franke, style expert and faculty member at The Art Insti-
tute of Pittsburgh, offers a creative spin on the age-old tradition for the
bride-to-be in 2015.
Something old: Continuity with the bride’s family and the past.
According to Franke, trends suggest a rising popularity in vintage
gowns.
“A 1960s-era gown will not only allow a bride to check something
“old” off her list, but may also offer affordability and superior work-
manship,” says Franke who recommends vintage shops as well as eBay
to begin the search. “To make her purchase even more meaningful, a
bride might consider purchasing a dress from one of many organiza-
tions who recycle wedding gowns for charitable fundraising.”
For another possibility to represent something “old,” Franke sug-
gests implementing a table of wedding photographs collected from
family and friends attending the reception. The photos will honor the
marriages of couples close to the bride and groom as well as provide a
wonderful center for conversation.
Something new: Optimism and hope for the bride’s life ahead
“Renewable is the new ‘new,’ ” says Franke. For a fresh approach
to something new, Franke suggests environmentally responsible deci-
sions such as selecting potted perennials for centerpieces. “Potted wild-
flowers will create a vibrant setting for the reception and can later be
planted in the garden at the newlywed’s home.”
Franke also suggests seed satchels as favors to serve as a long-liv-
ing connection to the wedding.
Even guests can get into the game. “If you’re invited to a wedding
this year, consider presenting the couple with a gift that offers a new
spin on traditional gift options.” Franke suggests antiques carefully se-
lected for the couple or aluminum serving pieces.
Something borrowed: A reminder that the bride can still depend on
friends and family.
Traditionally, a bride can borrow anything from her best friend’s
punch bowl to her grandmother’s pearls, but Franke suggests fulfilling
the adage by creating a buzz. “Why not borrow an antique car and cre-
ate a dramatic exit from your wedding?” Franke asks.
Another emerging trend is the borrowing of the cake knife from
one bride to another within a family. Starting a tradition now of pass-
ing along your cake knife or other wedding essentials is not only cost-
saving, but also creates a legacy that future generations will treasure.
Design and style tips offer a creative spin on an old wedding tradition

Something blue: A color suggesting
purity and fidelity as evidenced in the
19th century phrase “Marry in blue,
lover be true.”
Building blues into the wedding
color scheme is an option for completing
your old, new, borrowed and blue check-
list, and at the same time, developing a
color scheme for your reception.
“Think like a graphic designer,” says
Franke. “Consider your wedding colors
as a controlled palette.” Franke encour-
ages the bride to visit a paint store or
check a Pantone system and define a se-
ries of colors, never more than three.
Once selected, the bride can keep
the color chips with her throughout the
planning period so that the exact colors
are always available when decisions are
made about bridesmaids’ gowns, table
linens, floral arrangements and other
decorative elements.
According to Franke, blues are an el-
egant choice for any season. He suggests
pairing royal blues with yellow for a clas-
sic summer wedding; blue and pink for
spring; and icy blues with whites or silver for a winter wedding.

W hite will probably never lose its
place in a wedding, but a grow-
ing number of brides are turn-
ing to color to help personalize their special
day. From a pop of color on a white or ivory
wedding gown, to entire themes that carry
throughout the flowers, decor, favors and ac-
cessories, you can use color to set the mood
for guests or make a statement about your
personal style.
“Brides are embracing color as another
way to customize their weddings,” says Ray
Miller of My Wedding Reception Ideas.com,
a leading online resource for brides seeking
unique wedding favors, wedding decorations
and wedding supplies. “Customizing with
color offers brides such a range of creativity.
They can choose colors that honor their heri-
tage, evoke the atmosphere of a specific place
or celebrate a memory or experience that is
special to the wedding couple.”
If you’ll be saying your “I do’s” in 2011,
Miller offers some advice for using color to
help create the wedding of your dreams.
Tips for choosing a color“When it comes to choosing colors for your
wedding — whether it’s for accessories, table
linens, bridesmaid gowns or even a wedding
gown accent — the only unbreakable rule
should be that you must love the colors you
choose,” Miller says.
Keep in mind, however, that different col-
ors will create different moods, and not all
colors will feel like a good fit for your wedding
depending upon where and when you have it.
For example, if your goal is to create a wed-
ding that captures the fresh, innocent aura of
spring, vibrant red table linens and ice-blue
bridesmaids’ gowns will be in conflict with
that atmosphere.
“Certain colors are traditionally associ-
ated with each season,” Miller notes. “If you’re
emphasizing a seasonal effect, keep in mind
the colors that the natural world wears during
that season.”
Colors that will be popular this spring
and summer include hot pink, apple green,
celadon, pine green, clementine orange and
yellow. Heading into fall, look for amber,
chestnut, dark tangerine and brick red. Win-
ter weddings will sport colors ranging from
Santa’s suit red and Christmas tree green to
oyster gray, ice blue and pale purple.
Carrying it throughOnce you’ve chosen your wedding colors,
you’ll need to think about how you’ll use
them — in both the ceremony and reception.
Your creativity will serve you well here. Your
wedding colors can be used in virtually every
aspect of your big day, from the bridal bou-
quet and decor in the ceremony location, to
table linens and accessories for the reception.
Accessory collections are an easy way to
carry your chosen color throughout the wed-
ding. For example, at My Wedding Reception
Ideas.com, you’ll find accessory collections
cataloged by color. These collections allow
you to continue your color theme — whether
it’s a traditional shell pink, a rich royal purple
or even camouflage — with color-specific ac-
cessories such as flower girl baskets, ring bearer
pillows, guestbooks and garters. What’s more,
you can customize table linens and even guest
favors using your chosen colors.
Wedding gowns and colorFor decades in America, white and ivory have
reigned when it comes to wedding gowns.
However, the color trend that began last year
with pops of color appearing on bridal fash-
ion runways has continued in 2011. This year,
brides have more options than ever if they’re
looking to use color to make a personal state-
ment with their wedding gown.
From gowns that feature beading and crys-
tals in sparkling hues, to floral accents that
capture a season’s signature colors, and even
bodices or skirts in contrasting colors, bridal
gowns in 2011 are going colorful.
If you’ve already chosen a traditional white
or ivory gown, you can still dress it up with
your wedding color. A simple sash or floral
accent that matches your color theme will
look great against the pure, fresh background
of white. And if you haven’t yet chosen a
gown, you may just discover one with a touch
of color that can become the color theme for
your entire wedding.
