For more than 30 years, The Chronicle has been the Canberra and Queanbeyan region’s free community newspaper.During this time, we have built and

maintained a reputation for excellence in providing local news, information on community events and cost-effective advertising solutions for Canberra and Queanbeyan businesses.

We’re also recognised for our commitment to quality content and our ability to deliver results for our advertisers. These commitments have seen our client base consistently grow.

To cater to all local communities, and to provide targeted, cost-effective advertising, The Chronicle is published each week in two area editions.

Our competitive free home delivery distribution edge is now also enhanced through a multimedia platform approach that engages with audiences throughout the day. We also make use of collected databases to communicate directly with our audience.

On average this means 100,000* weekly readers in print. We have also developed and increased our readership via our free digital subscription model. We now have more than 2600 digital edition subscribers and that number will only grow.

100,000* Chronicle newspapers are published each Tuesday then delivered free-to-home Tuesday through Thursday.

For over 30 years, The Chronicle has been a printed newspaper

source that stimulates thought, starts conversations and shapes the important community issues of the week. We not only deliver community news to readers, we deliver readers interested in community news to advertisers – therefore, we deliver enormous value for money.

Community readers want to know about community business

ReadersReadership is the currency of advertising dollars. It indicates the number of people receiving and reading a copy of The Chronicle each week.

The Chronicle’s readership responds to Chronicle advertising and are proven spenders / consumers.

Unlike many other hard-copy newspapers and publications, The Chronicle’s readership actually trends to grow. Our current audience includes more than half of our region’s over 50’s population. This readership is important to all advertisers because, both locally and nationally, this group is our wealthiest and highest spending consumer.

We deliverThe Chronicle is a convenient source of information and is driven by the value for money that we can provide via our competitive distribution edge. We deliver direct to separate title residents and in-turn, deliver value to our advertisers.

Please note: We do not deliver to unit complexes.

It’s all done for youWe provide a one-stop shop for within your marketing mix. Account management, creative, graphic design, printing and production are all provided.

THOUSANDS flocked to the 2013Royal Canberra National PoultryShow over the weekend, but New-shound is pretty sure he was the onlydog lucky enough to attend. The poultry show at Exhibition Park

was officially opened by an egg-citedFederal Member for Fraser AndrewLeigh before thousands of Canberransturned out to see the birds. This year about 60 poultry, water

fowl and turkey breeds were exhibited, but the star of the show and the featurebreed was the pekin bantam.Newshound has never been called

the “star of the show”, although helikes to think he is a bit of a star in TheChronicle office.Newshound had never seen so many

birds in the one place before – therewere more than 600 birds taking partin this year’s show. Some of the birdshad beautiful, colourful feathers whileothers were much bigger than anybirds Newshound remembers from hissummer holidays visiting his cousinson their farm in Murrumbateman. The best of the birds in Canberra

Keeping it simple and traditionalKAI

Food of the week

For those wanting to experience the flavours of other countries, boarding a plane isn’t the only option. Our neighbours from across the Tasman are closer than ever, with restaurant Kai offering traditional cuisine of the indigenous Maori people of New Zealand. Having taken root in Canberra in the inner-south shopping district of Manuka, owners Dennis Waiheke and wife Karen said that the business was an opportunity for them to explore their culture and for Australians to become more familiar with their Pacific neighbours. “Kai simply means food in Maori. We wanted to keep it simple and traditional, so that people can experience the traditional food of Aotearoa [New Zealand] for themselves,” Mr Waiheke said. “There’s so much culture and

tradition to celebrate, and food is the best way to experience the everyday lives of different people.” Five years ago, after working in the building and scaffolding industry in Canberra for nearly 15 years, Mr An experienced chef, Mrs Waiheke implemented the help of her husband’s friends in the building industry to convert their disused car trailer into a portable, hooded oven to prepare food in the hangi style – a Maori method that involves burying food in a pit for several hours with hot coals and covering it with cloth. Kai was officially opened on New Zealand’s national day, Waitangi Day on February 6, and serves lunch and dinner seven days a week. For more information, phone 6161 5494 or visit kai.com.au

Canberra’s “The travelling tradie”NIGHTS WATCH BUILDING CO

Tradie of the week

To see your business featured here, contact The Chronicle advertising on 6280 2215

It’s rare to find someone who is truly passionate about what they do, to the point where they will go above and beyond on even the smallest of jobs. But that is the attitude of builder Jon Snow, whose business Nights Watch Building Co is quickly gaining a stellar reputation around Canberra and the surrounding region.Despite this success, Jon explained to The Chronicle that he wasn’t always sure he wanted to be a builder. “A few years back, I decided to travel the world for a bit before deciding on a career path,” he said.“I sort of stumbled across a group that was building schools in villages in South America, and ended up hanging out there and working with the program for six months.”“It was only after travelling

there that I really knew it was what I wanted to do,” he said.“I got back to Canberra and started my apprenticeship straight away, and the rest is history.”That was five years ago. Now, fully qualified and with his own building business, Jon has quite a few success stories behind him.He worked on the fitout for hip new inner south eatery Kai, taking care to work with the restaurant owners to preserve the original glory of the heritage building. But there is one job that really stands out for Jon.“Last year I was able to help my mum construct her dream home, using some pretty innovative techniques to make it unique and energy-efficient,” he said. For more information, phone Jon on 0400 000 000 or visit nightswatchbuilding.com.au

An iconic Canberra treasure trove ARNOLD’S ANTIQUES

Business of the week

To see your business featured here, contact The Chronicle advertising on 6280 2215

As the capital grew into the bustling territory it is today, so did Arnold’s Antiques, an iconic Canberra collectable and vintage treasure trove established in 1964.“We opened Arnold’s to acquire more room for the collectable items we had pouring out of our home,” store founder Arnold Fitzgerald said.“My wife Helen and I have always been avid antique collectors. We would spend our weekends hunting for the rarest finds. I was more into military memorabilia and Helen loved her homewares.“We filled the house to the roof! Every nook and cranny was filled with a little piece of history that we had collected over the years, so it seemed fitting that we start a business to combine our passion with work,” Ms Fitzgerald said. The then-newlyweds were new

to Canberra in the 1960s, and opened the store to enable then to continue their hobby.“We loved working together every day – sharing our passion with others, being able to connect with the community and establish a circle of friends with same interests,” Ms Fitzgerald said. The pair have decided to retire and hand over the business to grandchildren Jack and Sophie.Sophie recalls running through the aisles upon aisles of vintage goods, playing dress-ups with her grandmother and hide and seek with her grandfather.“I’m so excited to take over the shop and create those memories with my children and grandchildren too,” she said. For more information, phone 6280 0000 or visit the store at 99 Old Street, Curtin.

As a further benefit, profiles are exceptional value, offering huge savings off our casual rates.

2 Where the advertiser, its advertising agent or representative (in these terms and conditions

jointly referred to as the ‘Advertiser’) lodges an advertisement for a job (a ‘Job Advertisement’) in a FCP publication, that has a prime circulation area that covers the location of the job, and it is accepted by FCP, FCP may at its absolute discretion publish the Job Advertisement in MY CAREER and in any other FCP publication it so chooses.

(including the Trade Practices Act 1974) where to do so

would: (a) contravene that statute; or (b) cause any part of these terms and conditions to be void. The liability of FCP, and the Advertiser’s sole remedy for breach of statute, will be limited to re-supplying, or paying for the re-supply, of the advertisement at the discretion of FCP.

7 The Advertiser must indemnify FCP against all losses, expenses, damages and costs (on a

solicitor and own client basis) incurred by or awarded against FCP arising out of or in connection with any breach of these terms and conditions which is wholly or partly attributable to or arising out of the acceptance and publication of any advertisement.

8 The Advertiser warrants to FCP that any advertisement that is accepted for publication

contains information that is true and correct in all respects, is in no way misleading or deceptive such that it may contravene section 52 of the Trade Practices Act 1974, section 53c of the Trade Practices

Act 1974 or any other provision of any law of the State or Commonwealth, and is otherwise lawful.

9 Without limiting FCP’s rights under clause 1 of these terms and conditions, advertisements must

comply with FCP’s standards of presentation, style and classification in respect of advertisements placed with FCP.
