Advertising Agency/Production HouseSound Idea was launched in 1992 by François Karstel, originally as an advertising
agency and production house. In addition to media planning, bookings and the
design of magazine advertisements, we also wrote, recorded and produced tv and
radio commercials for companies like African Bank, Junk Mail, Silverton Radiators (Behr
Group) and Natura. We have produced 36 television commercials and over 400 radio
commercials to date.
Video ProductionThe corporate video market became very active in the early 90’s and we have since
produced over 200 corporate videos to date for companies like Afrox, ABB, BMW, Famous
Brands and Sasol.

MultimediaAt the same time we recognised the need to get involved with multimedia and
programming. With programming we could provide more sophisticated applications
including a Learning Management System for African Bank. One of our software
specialities was self-up datable interactive multi- media. On this platform, a client could
edit his own multimedia. This turned out to be remarkably popular as these presentations
were used for everything from sales to group presentations.

WebsitesWe have been developing websites since the Netscape browser was on version 1 for
companies like Merisant (Canderel Sweeteners) and Natura (medicine). We also spent
hours per day making website changes for our clients. It became clear that what
companies really needed was a platform or management system that helped them to
make fast, online changes themselves.
p5
Content Management SystemsWe began to develop the software for this even though the term “Content Management
System” was not familiar at that stage. Absa gave the go-ahead to build something along
these lines and we took the opportunity to build a Content Management System called
SiteManager from scratch over the next 2 years. This software was developed in ASP and
was widely used. In fact, Medihelp was using SiteManager for their corporate website
until June this year (2010).
Our client, Netcare, needed a lot more from their system so we built a micro-sites module
(the ability to create smaller websites from the main CMS). To this day there are multiple
Netcare micro sites still operating on that original system.

Collective Mind 1Since those early experimental days we have built 2 major Content Management
Systems. “Collective Mind 1” was also developed from the ground up. It had many
interesting features including “personalisation”. The system could recognise a user and
adjust the visible content based on their earlier habits or their position in the company.
Collective Mind 1 rolled out in 2004. It took 2 years to develop and then at least another
year to beta test. It could handle anything from sms notifications to newsletter systems,
surveys, discussion forums and extensive statistics. One of the websites that ran on
Collective Mind I was http://www.nelsonmandela.org
New technologies were becoming available like AJAX. With AJAX websites were faster
and more efficient than before. This was particularly true when it came to admin
interfaces. At this stage we were becoming deeply involved with online marketing and
strategy development, Search Engine Optimisation and Lead Generation.
For many companies, especially large companies or groups, who take their digital
marketing seriously, one website simply isn’t enough anymore. A company can make
use of multiple websites including corporate portals and separate website for different
divisions and brands etc. In addition, microsites and landing pages often need to be
developed just for one particular campaign.
p7
Collective Mind IIIt was in light of these facts that caused us to start the development process of Collective
Mind II. Once again, it was built completely from the ground up.
Some of the websites that run on Collective Mind II include;
http://www.spoor.com
http://www.sahrc.org.za
http://www.postnet.co.za
http://www.tileafrica.co.za
http://www.bayeres.co.zat
http://www.mazista.co.za
http://www.tal.co.za
Collective Mind II also forms the backbone for mobi sites and features powerful modules
for lead generation and management.

SharepointAround 2008, we realised that Microsoft SharePoint was the big system in enterprise
Content Management. Since then we have become very active in SharePoint
development and implementation. One of our first SharePoint projects was for The
SARCC (South African Rail Commuter Corporation), who needed their intranet developed
in SharePoint. We were contracted to set up everything from planning and building the
server farm to custom applications and integrations and eventually implementing the
system. Since then we have done many Sharepoint projects. The For Good Foundation
website, for example, is a complete social media website. It contains many of the
functionalities that you will find on Facebook.
We have created many custom SharePoint applications for Spoor & Fisher and
We recently completed development on the Adcorp SharePoint website.

Sound Idea DigitalAt this point we decided to change our name to Sound Idea Digital because we became
aware in late 2008 that Digital Marketing would eventually be replacing traditional
advertising. To that purpose we have put a lot of energy into skills development
related to Digital Marketing. Currently we manage a number of corporate websites and
continue to provide content management, digital promotion strategies and monthly
search engine optimization.
On-line videoVideo has also become a very important factor in online marketing. Our experience in
advertising and corporate video has given us the perfect background to extend this
experience into the realm of online video.

The Sound Idea Digital Marketing AcademyIn 2011 we developed the Sound Idea Digital Marketing Academy. The courses have
been designed exclusively for Sound Idea’s clients to keep up-to-date on the current
digital marketing trends and are free of charge.
The courses are video based and take only 30 minute per week to complete. Additional
learning material consisting of a short self-assessment and a practical assignment is also
included in each module. There are a total of 50 lessons which should take about a year
to complete.
The modules will cover aspects of digital marketing which include the following:

ManagementSound Idea is an owner-managed company (Francois Karstel). Many of our key clients
have been with us for over a decade. This shows the level of consistency and service that
we offer. Our longest client, Die Oog Holiday Resort, was with us from 1992 until last year
when it was sold to a property developer who turned it into a retirement village. Our
case studies (developed from Die Oog) show significant proof that Digital Marketing is
the future.
Pro Active approachWe take a pro-active approach and constantly look for opportunities on behalf of our
clients. Two of our long-standing clients, Mazista Tiles and Bayer will attest to the benefits
that they received from our depth and experience spanning almost 20 years.
Click here so see our client testimonials video.
ConclusionWe are on the cusp of a Digital Marketing Revolution. Of course, it does not simply swing
from one to the other. For this reason we are perfectly positioned to manage existing
traditional media campaigns that integrate with digital campaigns.
