Chilimika Nkhatabay DistrictChilimika (meaning year) is performed mostly by Tonga Women and youth of Nkhatabay District in the North-ern Region. Kulamba Chewa Ceremony

Mkaika, KateteThe Kulamba traditional ceremony held in Mkaika, the headquarters of the Chewa people, is the time for the ‘Kulamba’, or paying homage. All the subordinate chiefs in Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique come to Katete at Mkaika to pay their tributes and join in the celebrations with their people. The ceremony, held after harvest in late August, is a way of bringing together dif-ferent Chewa Chiefs from the three countries to present their reports of grievances to paramount Chief Kalonga Gawa Undi.

Gonapamuhanya RumphiIt is an annual event which takes place once a year around August or September in Rumphi among the Tum-buka ethnic group of northern Malawi at Senior Chief Chikulamayembe’s Headquarters in Bolero. The Tum-buka people of Nkhamanga area in Rumphi commemo-rate the first Chikulamayembe through recounting the history, economic activities achievements and lineage of Chikulamayembe as well as traditional dances.

Lake of Stars Mu-sic Festival

Mangochihe Music Festival is a four-day international music festival held on the shores of Lake Malawi, the third biggest lake in Africa. The festival was created to raise money for a developing economy whilst helping to promote Malawi as a tourist destination and expose Malawian artists to inter-national crowds. The festival has a diverse music policy ranging from Afro-pop, reggae and folk to beat boxers and international DJs.

Vimbuza Festival North MalawiVimbuza, a popular dance among the Tumbuka of North-ern Malawi, is a healing dance. It is performed to cure a number of mental and psychological illnesses. The name Vimbuza also signifies the disease which is mostly wide-spread in the Northern and Central Regions of Malawi and is very common among the women folk. The dance has received recognition from UNESCO as a Masterpiece of Intangible Heritage

Quissico, InhambaneEvery year the “Marimbeiros of Zavala” hold their Festival. This group of men is very well known in Mo-zambique and in other parts of Africa for playing the “timbila” (which is also the name of a dance) and the “marimba chope”, a type of xylophone made from a special wood found only in Inhambane. Another of their talents is reciting spontaneous verse.

Marula Festival Ebuhleni Royal Residence and Hlane Royal residence

The Marula season begins each year in mid-February and continues until early march, bringing with it a cel-ebration of the harvest of the marula fruit.The Swazis hold an annual Marula Festival celebrated at the Royal Residence of the King at Ebuhleni and Hlane Royal Residence in the Hhohho Region of Swaziland between February and March. Both the King and the Queen Mother are presented with marula beer from each household, in keeping with it being a ‘fruit fit for kings.’ Only afterwards can Swazis drink their home brew.

The Nedbank Imvelo MTB Classic takes place at Mlil-wane Wildlife Sanctuary on an annual basis at the be-ginning of June. It’s one of Swaziland’s, in fact Southern Africa’s, truly great cycling events. The event typically offers four distances of approximately 10km, 22km, 35km and 65km for cyclists.

NationalCelebrates the coming together of Zimbabwe’s two politi-cal parties, the Zanu PF and PF Zapu (one representing the shona-speaking and the other the Ndebele-speaking people). These two groups had fought together against the colonial government of Rhodesia in the 1970s. Among the celebrations to mark this day are a number of sporting events, including soccer championship in which the winning team receives the unity cup.
