Every year in autumn we try to decide on what

tours are on offer for the next summer. Since 1992

we have been refining our trips and then matching

them with our team of great guides. Our clients’

lasting memories and their enthusiastic feedback

confirm to us that we are meeting and exceeding

their expectations. We hope you will join us on a

trip of your choice and allow us to share our country

and our secret places with you.

Cycling Choose from any of our six South Island itineraries

– including the Otago Rail Trail or our exciting Vi-

etnams Mekong Delta. With some 50 plus departure

dates and trips catering for both the Recreational

Cyclist or the Serious Cyclist, we

believe we can provide a superb

cycle experience for almost any-

one, in a country rated as one of the top five cycle

locations in the world.

HikingWith numerous beautiful landscapes

to choose from, our walking tours

are designed to explore and amaze.

No matter what level of difficulty we have a range

of beautiful country for you. Comfortable day hikes,

overnighting in unique accommodation, or just en-

joying the remote views of far away mountains.

Remarkable AdventuresIf you want to do more than just cycling or hiking,

our Multi-Activity adventure tours under the Re-

markable Adventures programme are designed for

you. From sea kayaking to rafting, blackwater caving

to a glacier explora-

tion, chances are its

included in one of these tours. Just the way to enjoy

the highlights of our whole of country itineraries.

Special GroupsDeveloping special interest tours for clients from

around the world is our speciality. Tell us what gets

your interest and how much time you have and

then leave the details to us. Groups of 2 to 22 can

be accommodated, because we know our country

and the toys to explore it with, and some beautiful

secrets to share with you. If you have an idea – give

us a call.

At Adventure South we look forward to meeting with

you and sharing the special parts of our country.

tions and boats). Full details of the lodges are provided in the trip notes which accompany each itinerary.

Our evening meals are taken at the lodge or a local restaurant. A chance to relax and reflect. Our small numbers allow us great flexibility.

‘Just what does my price cover?’Our trips are priced to include almost all further costs you may encounter. In most itineraries ap-proximately half of the evening meals are included, which provides you the chance to explore the range of eating options on the balance of the nights. This then frees up your evenings to explore and take time out. Various trips do have optional activities available, which you may wish to undertake - such as scenic flights for which you will be responsible.

‘What size are the groups?’Our maximum group size is 14 clients with two guides. These maximums allow us to provide the high degree of personal care you can expect and allow for differing levels of fitness and interest to be catered for. Group sizes may be larger on spe-cial/custom tours.

‘Okay - what do I do now?’It’s simple! Either contact your travel agent or Adventure South for a full itinerary, trip notes and booking form. Phone, fax or email are just fine and we will send you the package by return email or mail. It’s as easy as that!

‘I always wanted to try a soft adventure holiday but...’ But nothing! We have designed these trips for people of all levels of fitness and experience. Both the expert and those with little experience will find a trip to suit their level of comfort. We show you what fun some of these activities still are - and set against some of the best scenery New Zealand has to offer.

‘What about food...?’Don’t come if you want to lose weight! Our guides are experienced in providing culinary delights for guests in the outdoors. We also dine at friendly restaurants, lodges and farmstays throughout the itinerary. At half the locations you will have the delight of following your own food preferences assisted by your guides’ recommendations.

‘But I’m fit and want to extend myself’Good! Because you will have many opportuni-ties to do just that. Some clients have cycled or hiked for up to six hours a day and loved it! With two guides ‘on board’, many of our cycle sections and hikes can be split between groups of differing levels of experience as well.

‘I’d like to try but what if I can’t keep up...?’No problem! The cycling sections are carefully selected on good roads and we always have a sup-port vehicle should you need it.

Our walking trips undertake either full day hikes or in some instances two half day walks, which involves you carrying only your personal gear. The exception is our new Southern Alps Treks where a small amount of party gear may be added to your light load. Our guides are quickly able to monitor the strengths of the party and adjust the hikes accordingly, including providing longer options for fitter clients. Remember, you only cycle or hike as much as you want to. You can always choose to take the bus at any time for an easier day.

‘What accommodation will we use?’Our trips are all lodged across a wide range of character accommodation. All have private facilities (except for the Otago Rail Trail, selected hiking loca-

“Justin was a great guide who worked his butt off and saw to it that each person in our group had a good experience. He was always mindful of our different abilities and didn’t cave in to pressure to push anybody beyond those abilities. He was even able to seduce some of us into doing more than we thought possible. That’s what a great guide would do!”Carlyn Weintraub, USA

From Queenstown we dip south to Te Anau and then journey into remote Doubtful Sound for a magical

overnight stay on board our floating hotel. Retracing the journey by coach, we then travel onto Stewart

Island for two nights, with optional Kiwi spotting, kayaking or walks to keep you entertained. Continu-

ing up the wild and remote Catlins coast with an overnight stay we then continue onto Dunedin and

the Otago Peninsula. Inland we travel to the heart of the Southern Alps and overnight beneath Mt Cook

This is a selection of ‘multi-activity’ holidays, designed for you to see the countryside, whilst participating in a variety of activities along the way. They are aimed at those adventurers who are typically young at heart, and who are seeking a challenge with a degree of comfort at the end of the day. The New Zealand Adventure Odyssey tours explore both the North and South Islands of New Zealand. There are three options, a 14 day tour of both islands, a 9 day tour of the South Island, or a 6 day tour of the North Island. The full 14 day tour trip is designed to allow clients to travel over the weekend to New Zealand and return two weeks later on a week-end, it departs Mondays and ends Sunday lunch time.

“Your holiday did what it said in the itinerary, everyday was filled with adventure, new experiences that I will never forget and beauty to treasure. Thanks you for a wonderful time.” Koon-Fung Leung, London, New Zealand adventure odyssey, Feb 2008.

Page 11: Adventure South brochure

Join us on a 14 day journey of discovery to many of New Zealand’s far off locations including the volcanic White Island. This tour includes many new locations and activities, all packaged into a trip of a lifetime. (The trip can also be split into a North or South Island option, see our website for details). After a scenic drive around the Christchurch’s Port hills and a night on a farm stay we journey south to Queenstown, on the way exploring the highest mountains of the Southern Alps. We discover a rural area by jet boat before heading in to glacier country and the Te Wai Pounamu World Heritage Park. An impressive cave-rafting trip on the West Coast is followed by a visit on New Zealand’s longest Swing Bridge in the beautiful Buller River Gorge before travelling up to the Marlborough Sounds. You can choose between the friendly pathways of the Queen Charlotte walkway or exploring the waters edge from stable double kayaks. Into Wellington, a visit to Karori Sanctuary a safe haven for endangered native birds and other wildlife, pro-vides us with an insight into the history and bird life of New Zealand. Enjoy the thrill and excitement of some of New Zealand’s best white water rafting – or take the option of a more sedate and relaxing drift trip before spending the next day on White Island. In Rotorua we learn about the culture and music of the Maori people and Auckland’s sparkling Waitemata Harbour invites us to sailing trip, prior to the trip ending at midday.

“Bas and Lyneke, I want to thank you both for what was one of the best biking trips I’ve taken (and as you know this was number 64!!) I’m most grateful for the outstanding support I got from both of you. I have to put you both at the top of my list of outstanding guides for your diligence, wit and just plain hard work.”Richard Seltzer, Wynneford, USA, Milford Wilderness, Jan 2007

Rated as one of the top five touring routes in the world the wild West Coast is not to be missed.

“ Our cycle experience with Adventure South was a highlight of our tour to New Zealand. It was the tops and we are still reminiscing about the beautiful cycling and sights through the West of the South Island.”Mary Anne Stayner, Canada, West Coast Escape, March 2008.

Explore the spectacular scenery by bike, bus and on foot as we journey from Queenstown to Christchurch.

The lush rainforests are reached after an exhilarating swoop down Haast Pass out of the tussocklands of

Central Otago. On the mainly flat, forest edged roads, we pass through the spectacular coastline with its

high cliffs and crashing seas. This can only be described as cycling at its best. Famous for its rainforest and

grinding glaciers which have advanced to within 200 metres of sea level, the scenery is simply stunning.

Past glaciation and the work of the Alpine Fault have sculptured a beautiful landscape hard to imagine.

As an option, tip toe over the 200 metre thick ice on an exciting guided tour. Each night we enjoy the

memories from the comfort of our lodge with our hosts and fellow riders. Finally we emerge at the top of

Arthur’s Pass ready to join the Tranz Alpine train for a comfortable and spectacular ride into Christchurch,

acknowledged as one of the great scenic train rides in the world.

A 7 day cycle spectacular, we start on the East Coast beaches of Sumner and make our way to the native beech forests of the Lewis Pass and the Paparoa Range.

“ I would like to thank everyone involved for a wonderful experience. I have travelled to NZ before but this is the first time I have ridden and it is with-out doubt the best way to enjoy and appreciate such a beautiful country. My trusty bike was well maintained (a big thank you to your mechanic). The tour guide, Rossco, was experienced and his knowledge and history of NZ and the area through which we rode certainly enhanced the tour. I can and have been recommending the Adventure South experience to my cycling friends. I hope to be able to join you again to see more of the South Island by bike”. Denise Andersen, Australia, Beach to Beech, March, 2008.

Experience the natural blow-holes of Punakaiki, the rugged beauty of the West Coast and the mighty Buller

Gorge. Cycle the quiet rural backroads into Nelson, famous for its arts and crafts. Along the way we stop

at a local winery for a taste of their produce. The spectacular Kaikoura coastline provides the chance to

see a fur seal colony and there is the option of an early morning whale watch cruise. From our start over

the beautiful Lewis Pass, to the final day along the dramatic Kaikoura coastline, this is an action packed,

short duration cycle programme that delivers!

Starting out of Queenstown, and dipping southwards on the very quiet roads that edge onto Fiordland

National Park, we stay on a local farm before looping along the windswept southern coast. We leave the

rolling plains of Southland to spend two nights on the remote and magical Stewart Island with its beauti-

ful bays and rare birdlife. The 8 day itinerary covers new terrain as we tour the Catlins Coast, rich in its

history and wildlife. We picnic on the beach at beautiful Curio Bay, home to an ancient petrified forest,

fur seals, rare Hectors Dolphins and Yellow-Eyed Penguins before turning north towards our final night

in Dunedin, with its rich Scottish history.

For those keen to explore this region more, we offer an optional extra one day cycling tour on the Otago

Peninsula, including lunch at Larnach Castle and a visit to an Albatross and Penguin colony.

If you are looking to take a break from skiing or just to break up the cold winter months then come and join us on the Otago Central Rail Trail this winter. Enjoy cycling alongside the stunning snow capped mountains, hearty winter meals and the great Central Otago hospitality.

“As one of the participants of last week’s Otago Rail Trail trip I just wanted to say a great big thanks for the wonderful experience with an amazing tour guide - Louise! We experienced the four seasons in one week which enhanced the tour - especially for the Australians from Townsville - who had never seen snow before! The communication prior to, and during the tour was prompt and very professional. I look forward to booking another ‘adventure’ with your company next year.”Judy Burk, Otago Rail Trail, November 2008

This tour contrasts two scenic wine regions with the stark and surreal landscapes of the remote Molesworth Station, as well as visiting a traditional family run sheep ranch and the marine wildlife capital of Kaikoura.

Page 31: Adventure South brochure

New for the 2009/2010 season, the tour starts out of Christchurch, with five days of cycling in the

Northern Canterbury and Marlborough districts. We visit the emerging wine growing district of Waipara

Valley and travel via Hanmer Hot Springs onto the isolated road through the Molesworth Station, New

Together with our local Vietnamese partners we are excited to introduce a revised itinerary, for our very popular cycle tour in the exotic Mekong Delta. We now spend two nights each, in the very beautiful Victoria Resort Hotels in Chau Doc and Can Tho and have added in some more quiet road cycling into the little visited western Mekong Delta region. Tours are timed for the dry season when, although still hot, it is not humid. This tour caters for all levels of cyclists - distances are great enough to challenge strong riders but as the route is nearly all flat it is also suitable for recreational cyclists, combined with our vehicle support system. Enjoy delicious meals, Vietnamese cuisine is world renowned with its combina-tion of Western and Asian influences and we have carefully chosen restaurants with a high standard of hygiene. You will learn so much from our local English speaking guides who take great pleasure and pride in introducing you to their region. We guarantee they will become lifelong friends and you will leave with this unique corner of Vietnam occupying a special place in your heart.
