“If you can’t find adventure in your own

backyard, you’ll never find it anywhere!”

—Ellian A. Bell

WHAT IS ADVENTURE?To adventure essentially means:

“to commit to chance.” “A man practices the art of adventure

when he breaks the chain of routine

and renews his life through reading new

books, traveling to new places, making

new friends, taking up new hobbies

and adopting new viewpoints.”

—Wilfred A. PetersonTHIS ADVENTURE? The evening will lead you through

some of the many historical treasures,

artistic expressions and sensory delights

of Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighborhood.

Kitsilano was named after Chief

Khatsilano, an Indian Chief and his band

who resided near the beach until 1930.

In the 1960’s, “Kits,” as it is now called,

enjoyed a period of hippy love and good

vibes. Today both the young and the

young at heart play, live and work here.

THIS ADVENTURE?

The afternoon will lead you through some of the many historical treasures, artistic expressions and sensory delights of Vancouver’s downtown core.

As you wander, keep your eyes open for influences from three main cultures that helped shape this city. First Nations people lived on this land for many thousands of years before Europeans (including Captain George Vancouver) arrived in 1872. Chinese immigration began soon after, with the promise of work on Canada’s new railway, the CPR.

For this adventure you will need: two people, roughly $10, all 6 senses, and of course, an open mind.

An Afternoon Downtown is part 2 of 3 in a series of adventures that spans a full day in three of Vancouver’s diverse neighborhoods.

Each adventure is accessible from the #4 ubc|powell bus route.

THIS

ADVENTURE?

The morning will lead you through

some of the many historical treasures,

artistic expressions and sensory delights

of Vancouver’s Chinatown, the largest

Chinatown in Canada!

More than a century ago,

Shanghai Alley, near what is now

Pender and Carrall , was home to some

of the first Chinese immigrants in the

newly incorporated city of Vancouver.

Though Victoria was port-of- call then,

Vancouver was dubbed the “Salt Water

City” by the Chinese and was their

favorite city for settlement.
