LECTORS & INTERCESSORS AT MASS TODAY

THE COLLECT Purify our conscience, Almighty God, by your daily visitation, that your Son Jesus Christ, at His coming, may find in us a mansion prepared for Himself; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. THE FIRST READING:

READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Micah chapter 5 beginning at the 2nd verse

But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days. Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labour has brought forth; then the rest of his kindred shall return to the people of Israel. And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they shall live secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth; and he shall be the one of peace.

PSALM 80: 1-7 Qui regis Israel.

1. Hear, O Shepherd of Israel, leading Joseph like a flock;* shine forth, you that are enthroned upon the cherubim.

2. In the presence of Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh, * stir up your strength and come to help us.

3. Restore us, O God of hosts;* show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved.

4. O Lord God of hosts, * how long will you be angered despite the prayers of your people?

5. You have fed them with the bread of tears; * you have given them bowls of tears to drink.

6. You have made us the derision of our neighbours, * and our enemies laugh us to scorn.

7. Restore us, O God of hosts; * show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now* and shall be forever. Amen.

THE EPISTLE A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter to the Hebrews chapter 10 beginning at the 5th verse.

Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, ‘Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body you have prepared for me; in burnt-offerings and sin-offerings you have taken no pleasure. Then I said, “See, God, I have come to do your will, O God” (in the scroll of the book it is written of me).’ When he said above, ‘You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt-offerings and sin-offerings’ (these are offered according to the law), then he added, ‘See, I have come to do your will.’ He abolishes the first in order to establish the second. 1And it is by God’s will* that we have

been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

THE HOLY GOSPEL A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Glory to Christ our Saviour. In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leapt in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leapt for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.’

The Gospel of Christ. Praise to Christ our Lord.

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings:

It is the start of Christmas week. This is an exciting time for Christians around the world as we celebrate the incarnation of YAHWEH.

Christians believe that the creator of the world assumed human flesh and came as one of us; yet without the sin and shortcomings found within human nature. (Hebrews 4:15)

One cannot deny that this story is so powerful that the world as we know it takes a pause to recall that awesome event when the Word became flesh and dwelt among us full of grace and truth, as the the

author of St. John’s Gospel succinctly puts it. (John 1:14)

We tend to love most things, if not every thing about Christmas, the lights, the carols, and people shopping for presents for relatives, friends and co-workers.

This past week I was very happy in my role as hospital chaplain to witness, one of the the children who was Confirmed in October, Ashlee Hammond present a gift to the Director of Nursing Services for use on specified wards, in the presence of The Chairman of the Board and the Chief Executive Officer. A photo of the presentation can be viewed on Church’s Facebook page.

The school children are on holiday and finally those in tertiary level institutions are glad that that dreaded end of semester exams are over and they can relax a bit and enjoy the season.

Rita Ferrone the author of several books about liturgy, in a recent article invites us to consider the tremendous symbol in the Christmas story.

Indeed our understanding of scripture helps us to see words as symbols. We must look beyond the symbol in order to get to the deeper theological and spiritual meaning beneath the text.

In the midst of the preparation and the enjoyment that Christmas brings we must ask ourselves what is the meaning of the “Word made Flesh” and of the angels and the shepherds as we read ourselves into the story to realize that Christ is born in us daily and invites us to worship him.

Page 7: Advent 4 c(2015)

May God’s grace rest upon us at this Christmas time and let us remember the sad, the lonely, the depressed, those in hospitals and other institutions and recall that God dwells within them as well.

Every blessing as we look forward to worshiping together with relatives and friends at Christmas time.

Your friend and priest,

Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon) Rector

HEALTH CORNER by Dr. Sophia Marshall Dietary fiber or roughage is a type of carbohydrate that is obtained from plant sources. It isn’t digested by our bodies and passes relatively intact through the stomach, small intestine, and colon and out of the body. Fiber is classified as soluble if it dissolves in water and insoluble if it does not. Soluble fiber is found in the following:

➢ Most fruits; Barley; Oat bran; Nuts and seeds

➢ Beans and Peas

Insoluble fiber is found in the following: • Whole wheat bread; Wheat bran; Brown rice;

• Whole grain cereals; Seeds; Most vegetables; Fruits

Both types of fiber have important health benefits and we should eat a variety of different plant foods to ensure that we get the greatest benefits.

WHAT ARE THESE HEALTH BENEFITS? 1. Significant reduction in risk of coronary heart disease, stroke,

hypertension, diabetes, obesity and certain gastrointestinal diseases.

2. Increased dietary fiber in obese individuals significantly enhances weight loss. High-fiber diets tend to give a feeling of fullness for a longer time.

3. Normalizes bowel movements by increasing the weight and size of our stool and softening it. A bulky stool is easier to pass and hence decreasing chances of constipation.

4. Helps maintain bowel health by reducing the risk of developing hemorrhoids and small pouches in your colon (diverticular disease).

Remember these benefits as you dine this Christmas Season!
