The Jewish Agency is advancing women in Israel. From setting women on a path to entrepreneurship, to promoting health education and awareness, the Jewish Agency is empowering women, their families and Israeli society.

Small Business Loan FundsSmall business entrepreneurs in Israel’s outlying areas have diffi culty accessing capital to turn their ideas into practical enterprises. This is especially true for women. Through loan funds established by the Jewish Agency some 200 small businesses founded solely by women have received funding. One of the funds, established specifi cally for vulnerable populations, has granted 100 of its 155 loans to women. These funds are giving women unprecedented economic opportunity.Establishment of a new fund: $250,000To join an existing fund: $10,000

Atidim for IndustryThrough this groundbreaking program gifted women high school graduates in outlying areas receive a full fi nancial scholarship to Israel’s leading universities to earn a degree in science and engineering, to prepare them for a career in industry or high tech. During their university studies they receive tutoring assistance and are placed in a mentorship program with leading Israeli companies, with many going on to work for their “adopted” companies after graduation.Cost per student in the Atidim for Industry program: $8,500

Healthy Lifestyles for New MothersWorking with the Hadassah Optimal Medical Center, the Jewish Agency is training Tipat Chalav (mother and child clinic) nurses throughout Israel in aspects of healthy living. The one-year course includes workshops, lectures and experiential training in nutrition, exercise and healthy cooking which the nurses use to encourage mothers to make positive lifestyle changes. Cost per one-year course: $13,000

Preventing Violence against Ethiopian Women“From Confl ict to Resolution” is an innovative initiative to prevent violence against women in the Ethiopian community. Spearheaded by the Jewish Agency in cooperation with the Ethiopian National Project and other organizations working with the Ethiopian community, the program incorporates workshops, training courses for mediation, and the establishment of a crisis hotline for men and women. Targeting new immigrants living at Jewish Agency Absorption Centers, it aims to facilitate smooth transition into Israeli society, help defl ect confl ict and stress within the family and reduce violence against Ethiopian women within the community. The cost per group of 20 women at a Jewish Agency Absorption Center: $4,000.

Hagam - Empowering Vulnerable Women Soldiers Established in cooperation with the Israel Defense Forces and the Israel Association for Family Planning, this program provides the army’s most vulnerable female recruits with the opportunity to take responsibility for their behavior and improve their self-image and confi dence. The twelve-hour course promotes healthy sexuality, positive relationships and improved lifestyles. Offi cers also participate in a six-hour course to understand the issues faced by women soldiers. Cost per course for 150 participants: $18,000

The following are part of the ISHA Initiative, in cooperation with the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland. Funding is needed to expand each of these successful programs.

Training Women Health AdvocatesIn community centers throughout Israel, women are participating in a yearlong training program to become “grassroots” women’s health advocates. As part of the training, each woman launches her own program on a specifi c health issue targeted for her community. Local initiatives range from walking clubs, to nutrition workshops to breast cancer awareness and support groups.Cost per community center for one-year program: $15,000 (matched by the Israel Association of Community Centers)
