2012 Annual Report | 3
Dear Supporters:
Because of you, and others like you, this past year United Way of the National Capital Area has been able to help more people, provide more support to local nonprofits and make tremendous strides in our efforts to advance the common good in the greater Washington area. For example we:
• Awarded 256 Community Impact grants totaling more than $1.75 million.• Co-led the effort on “Give to the Max” Day, raising $2 million for local nonprofits.• Helped area residents file nearly 10,000 tax returns generating over $5 million in Earned Income Tax Credits and more
than $14.5 million in federal and state refunds.• Developed Way to P.E.A.C.E., a collaborative effort to reduce youth violence.• Helped more than 30,000 children get moving toward a healthier future with our Fun, Fly & Fit program.
The United Way staff and Board have recognized that the gap between resources and needs is growing wider throughout greater Washington. Yet, this year, United Way NCA increased our contributions from both the Combined Federal Campaign and workplace giving by 16 percent. Still, it is becoming more and more challenging to deliver real impact through our current business model. Only a revitalized United Way can help lead the response to this new era of challenges for the national capital area.
United Way NCA has made the shift to a “community impact” model, championed by United Way Worldwide and already a proven success in dozens of local United Ways throughout the U.S. This model focuses on identifying and meeting the most compelling community needs through targeted investments and collaborative solutions to address specific problems.
This year, United Way NCA emerged from a six-month strategic planning phase where we identified Workforce Readiness as our top priority for the greater Washington region. Our target populations include Post 9-11 veterans and exiting military (22-30 years of age) and disadvantaged youth (16 to 24 years of age); two groups that, with the right support, have incredible potential for personal success and for energizing our community as a whole.
Now more than ever, United Way NCA is in a unique position to make a powerful impact within our community. Through our time-tested workplace giving programs, a new sense of civic purpose, our on-the-ground presence throughout each of our eight municipalities and our broad network of community partners, we will improve more lives and advance the common good for our entire community.
On behalf of United Way NCA, we would like to personally thank you. Because of your support, we’ll continue to make the national capital area a better place for all.
Best Regards,
William A. Hanbury Joseph M. RigbyPresident & CEO Chairman of the Board

mAKing An impAcTfun, flY & fiT geTs Kids AcTive ThRoughouT The Region.Developed by United Way NCA, Fun, Fly & Fit® is an acclaimed, results-focused program that motivates children to play, exercise and have fun.
The program has scored remarkable successes throughout the greater Washington region. Its goal is simple yet powerful: to get kids so jazzed about physical fitness and nutrition that their attitudes and behaviors soar.
Fun, Fly & Fit is accessible to all communities because it’s free, self-sustaining, and adaptable. The program has been successfully implemented in more than 100 schools and other venues. It is now in more than 60 sites across the greater Washington region and reaching more than 30,000 kids.
Thanks to support from Kaiser Permanente, Fun, Fly & Fit now has its own website, funflyfit.org. Visit it today!
giving p.e.A.c.e. A chAnce: The fighT AgAinsT YouTh gAng violence. In September, United Way NCA joined forces with Maryland Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown and state officials to donate $100,000 toward a new initiative in Prince George’s County aimed at reducing the incidence of youth gang violence through prevention, education and awareness.
Working with its community partners, United Way NCA launched the one-year pilot program, Way to P.E.A.C.E. (Prevention, Education, Awareness, Connection and Empowerment) in two Prince George’s middle schools, where incidence of gang activity is highest.
Over the next 12 months, United Way NCA expects the results of the new program to show a reduction in crime, a measurable decrease in school absenteeism, a decrease in bullying incidents and an increase in graduation rates.
eARning A BReAK: helping loW-income ResidenTs sAve on TAXes.United Way NCA believes that when area residents understand the best money management options and the importance of banking, budgeting and savings, they are better equipped to ensure a more successful future.
This past year, with the help of our partners, Capital Area Asset Builders (CAAB), Northern Virginia Cash Campaign/Fairfax County Department of Family Services (NoVa CASH), and One Economy and the Mobile Tax Van, we were able to mobilize nearly 1,000 volunteer tax preparers to prepare almost 10,000 returns. The resulting refunds totaled more than $14.5 million for area residents, with more than $5 million from the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).
The EITC program was supported through generous grants from Bank of America and the Wal-Mart Foundation.
good medicine: fAmilYWiZe helps fAmilies AffoRd pRescRipTions.United Way NCA partnered with FamilyWize to bring prescription discounts to individuals and families not covered by health insurance or not having adequate medical coverage. The program provides recipients with discount cards.
We’ve joined more than 700 United Ways across all 50 states in an effort to save people $30 million in the next year on the cost of their medicine. Prescription discount cards are known to lower the cost of medicine by an average of 35 percent. So far this year, the program has saved families and individuals in the national capital area more than $3.4 million on prescriptions.
Visit our Get Help section on our website (UnitedWayNCA.org) to download and print a copy of the prescription card.
geTTing involvedWhAT A dAY: give To The mAX geneRATes moRe ThAn $2 million foR locAl chARiTies. On Wednesday, November 9, more than 17,000 national capital area residents donated to their favorite cause in the first ever Give to the Max Day: Greater Washington campaign.
More than 1,300 area nonprofits joined forces to let the community know about the strong spirit of compassion and service that abides in the greater Washington area, and to invite area residents to embrace that spirit and help make a difference in the lives of our most vulnerable citizens.
The nonprofit community carried out a robust online engagement campaign to tell real stories of how they help real people every day, and
media partners, such as NBC4 and Clear Channel played a significant role communicating the message to the public. The community responded, providing more than $2 million in donations to local charities.
fAsT sTART: uniTed WAY ncA KicKs off 2012 WiTh mAJoR gRAnTs To AReA nonpRofiTs.In January, United Way NCA awarded $1.75 million to more than 160 of its member nonprofit organizations located throughout the eight regions we serve.
The funds were raised through designations to the regional Community Impact Funds by individual donors and also through United Way NCA’s annual workplace giving campaign, involving employees from hundreds of corporations, educational institutions and municipalities in the region. Each grant directly addresses United Way NCA’s focus areas of education, health and financial stability.
Each year, United Way NCA solicits funding proposals from its member nonprofit organizations for specific programs and work in these communities. Funding decisions are made by a volunteer, citizen-led task force that works with area nonprofits, governments and business leaders to determine where there are gaps in services and where the funds will do the most good.
WoRld RecoRd: millions RAised in fedeRAl WoRKplAce giving cAmpAign. The Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) is the largest and most successful workplace giving campaign in the world. Over the last five decades, federal employees have generously pledged more than $7 billion to nonprofit organizations, including many that are United Way NCA members. Just this past year, United Way NCA and its member nonprofit organizations were pledged more than $14.2 million in donations by federal employees through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), which included the Combined Federal Campaign of the National Capital Area (CFCNCA),
Chesapeake Bay Area CFC and St. Mary’s County CFC.The largest of the three campaigns, CFCNCA, raised more than $13.5 million for the United Way NCA federation, an increase of nearly $2 million (or 16%). Simultaneously, the CFC went down in total revenue by more than $3 million. United Way NCA’s market share increased significantly.
There is no membership fee to belong to United Way NCA. The fee for member nonprofit organizations for CFC campaigns was 9%. United Way NCA does not charge additional fundraising or shrinkage fees.
one siZe helps All: shoeBoX pRoJecT eXceeds goAl.United Way NCA, in partnership with its young professionals group, United Way NCA Emerging Leaders, launched its first Shoebox Project to help meet the basic needs of the elderly, homeless and veterans in the greater Washington region.
Residents throughout the eight regions were encouraged to get an empty shoebox from their closet, fill it with personal care and emergency preparedness items, and take it to a drop-off location in their community from April 2 through June 1.
On June 21st, more than 65 volunteers from local businesses and nonprofits came together to volunteer their time as part of United Way’s annual Day of Action. Volunteers helped decorate, sort, assemble and pack more than 2,000 shoeboxes — more than twice the goal, and load them onto moving trucks. The shoeboxes were then delivered to 24 member nonprofit organizations.
spRinT inTo AcTion: neW online Tool mAKes iT eAsieR To volunTeeR.This spring, United Way NCA launched a new online volunteer placement tool. The user-friendly tool lets you sign up for volunteer opportunities with United Way NCA, track volunteer hours, and sign up to volunteer for one of United Way NCA’s member organizations—all in real time. VolunteerMatch, the leader in online volunteer networking, serves as the backbone for this service.
United Way NCA has arranged the program to allow any of our member nonprofit organizations to post their volunteer opportunities on our customized volunteer page. This gives additional exposure to those organizations and increases United Way NCA’s volunteer outreach within the community.
