Hydraulic Modeling
Used to understand hydrological processDavid Maidment describes as:
"mathematical representation of the flow of water and its components on some part of the land surface or subsurface environment."
Numerical ModelingComputer based (1d, 2d and 3d)Here we use 1D
Physical ModelingScaled down model (3d)

Project Site Results
River Station: 2062.794
Reach 10ft depth
78000lb of water moving at 2 ft/s
![Page 16: Advanced Technologies](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022062319/558c2bd4d8b42aab738b45dc/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Bank Erosion Control Measures
Rocks From calculations 1ft diameter

(3-4ft) - uncertainty 600 lb
![Page 18: Advanced Technologies](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022062319/558c2bd4d8b42aab738b45dc/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Measure 2 – Bendway Weir
Bendway Weirs Radius of curvature Height Spacing Slope of weirs
![Page 19: Advanced Technologies](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022062319/558c2bd4d8b42aab738b45dc/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
GPS
Faster than traditional surveying Accurate data collection
Useful when few reference points Coasts Waterways
![Page 20: Advanced Technologies](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022062319/558c2bd4d8b42aab738b45dc/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Global Positioning System (GPS)
In the survey world, is used to determine three variables: X, Y and Z using REAL TIME KINEMATICS (corrects in real time)
X and Y in our case are projected coordinates and use California State Plane, Zone V (we measure along a 2D plane not the earth’s surface)
Z is with respect to NAVD 1988
![Page 21: Advanced Technologies](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022062319/558c2bd4d8b42aab738b45dc/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
GPS and GIS
LiDAR data can infuse GPS data pointsGIS can merge both GPS and LiDAR pointsGIS creates one TIN with GPS/LiDAR pointsPerform GeoRAS process once again to
complete hydraulics
![Page 22: Advanced Technologies](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022062319/558c2bd4d8b42aab738b45dc/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
GPS Limitations
Multipath: points collected at
site (river) are lagged by tree canopy
GPS units used on site are not
being corrected in REAL TIME, use non RTK units
GPS points can be more than 30
ft ( 9 m) off from location taken
![Page 23: Advanced Technologies](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022062319/558c2bd4d8b42aab738b45dc/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
