Duplex Stainless Steels Conference & Exhibition 2010 Advanced Programme 13-15 October 2010, Beaune, France www.stainless-steel-world.net/duplex2010 A message from the Chair S cheduled for October 2010 in Beaune, France, the highly- anticipated Duplex Conference & Expo will be a meeting of the minds for materials professionals. In this exclusive interview, Conference Steering Committee Chairman Mr. Jacques Charles (General Manager of the Global Research and Development division of ArcelorMittal) explains why the event is attracting so much attention amongst scientists, end-users, producers, and distributors. Mr. Charles: “The conference has been set up to facilitate an exchange of experiences and information on duplex stainless steel products. Attendees will learn how to successfully utilise duplex and will return from the conference with more technical know-how.” The parallel exhibition will also constitute an important platform for knowledge transfer. Mr Charles: “Exhibitors have a key role in linking theory with practical aspects. I am utterly convinced that if you want to be successful with duplex, then an intellectual approach alone is not enough. You need to know exactly how duplex items differentiate themselves from other materials. All the exhibiting companies have very close relationships to the end users and have therefore gained a wealth of practical knowledge which will be invaluable to others.” Corrosion-resistant alternative A key area of attention at the conference will be the lean duplexes - the lowest alloying grades with almost no molybdenum and a very low nickel content. Mr Charles predicts that lean duplexes could even replace 316 and 304 stainless steel grades in many applications and so become a real volume market. “The first step will be to replace classical 304 and 316 plates in applications such as desalination plants, the pulp and paper industry and oil and gas. The material is also suitable to be used in less corrosive applications, of course. Applications in building and construction offer huge potential where internal parts are required to provide strength as well as corrosion resistance.” According to Mr Charles, the key question people should be asking is, ‘In situations where I’m using 304, shouldn’t I be using duplex instead?’ Mr Charles: “This is also true for all applications using painted carbon steel to prevent corrosion and requiring a long-life span. I foresee that duplex will not only replace the austenitic family but also carbon steel in many applications.” Future of duplex When compared to other materials, the current global production of duplex is still very modest. Total output is in the region of 400,000 tons, which is less than 3% of total stainless steel production. However, Mr Charles believes these figures could change considerably. “I am confident that we have the possibility to double duplex production in the next five years. But we do have to overcome some restrictions, the first being a lack of knowledge about duplex in some sectors. The Beaune event will be an important stepping stone in addressing that issue. My aim is to create more awareness amongst the market in general of how they can reduce costs tremendously through better material selection. Cost is always going to be a key factor, and if nickel and other alloying elements for 316 rise again, then this will drive up the use of duplex globally.” Wealth of information Mr Charles believes the format of Duplex World 2010 – plenary papers, technical sessions, workshops, the duplex academy and of course the exhibition – will provide enormous opportunities for both newcomers as well as seasoned professionals to learn how to benefit from using duplex materials. “The event will bring together materials engineers, procurement managers, research scientists, sales engineers and the like. So whether you simply want to source items like fittings and flanges in duplex, or whether you want to discuss how duplex can resolve some highly sophisticated applications, then the Duplex World 2010 show in Beaune is the right place to be.” Sponsored by: Supported by: Co-supported by: Déjà vu: Beaune I In 2010 - following on from a series of seven successful duplex conferences spanning the past thirty years - the Duplex Stainless Steel Conference will be returning to one of its former venues – the beautiful city of Beaune in France. Known world-wide for its famous mustard, this

is truly a city to visit! Go just 35 km south of Beaune to reach the AMIndusteel Le Creusot factory, which is famous for its specialty platesproduction but also has a massive forge and other industrial facilitiesrelated to the nuclear industry (AREVA) and the railway sector. Furthersouth still why not pay a visit to Cluny Abbey, which when built was thelargest Christian building in the world!

Highlights past and present2010 will mark the eighth conference dedicated to duplex stainless steels, spanning almost three decades. Since the first event, back in 1982, all the showshave been extremely successful in disseminating knowledge and expertise aboutduplex to a wide audience. As a build-up to the latest instalment in Beaune, hereare some of the highlights from past events.

1982: first show about duplex is organised in St Louis,USA.

1994: Duplex World is organised in Glasgow, Scotland.Conference Director Trevor Gooch (at the time ManagerMaterials Technology for TWI) said that “the number ofvisitors to the conference clearly shows that thisprogramme indeed fills a need for an internationalplatform where all branches of the industry can sharetheir expertise and experience.”A highlight of the social programme was definitely thevisit to the Transport Museum and the performance ofsword-fighting Scotsmen, which one delegate noted wasremarkably similar to negotiating a duplex contract![image – Scotsmen fighting – needs scanning]

1991: sees the show move to Beaune, France. Past attendeesreferred to this show as "the most legendary ever!"

2000: In October 2000 the beautiful city of Venice, Italy, played host to the 6th Duplex Conference & Expo.Organised by the Italian Metallurgical Association, theshow included 80 presentations and a workshop forfabricators. The show had a strong emphasis on scientificdevelopments, with many papers from the universitycommunity. The exhibition attracts 13 companies.

2010: the 8th Duplex World event is set for Beaune, France – thevenue of the legendary and most famous Duplex Conference everback in 1991. The Scientific Committee, under the chairmanship ofJacques Charles, reports having a hard task in selecting from themany paper proposals. In all, a staggering 121 papers will bepresented, and delegates will also be able to select from threeworkshops plus a Duplex Academy. Conference sessions includelocalised corrosion, process applications, metallurgy, welding, machinability and many others.

1997: Duplex World ’97 is held is Maastricht, the Netherlands, whereit is organised by Stainless Steel World. With 463 conference delegatesand a further 260 expo visitors, this show eclipsed all previous Duplexevents. A notable first was that presentations were made available on

CD-Rom, which, it was claimed, “would enable papers to be easily andconveniently searched using key words.”. Another first was the

introduction of workshops, where the audience could really discussselected topics under the guidance of experienced moderators. An

antique globe was presented to the Chairman, Mr Paul Løvland, whilst astainless steel champagne cooler (see photo) was awarded to a certain

Mr Jacques Charles in recognition of his hard work in developing, marketing and promoting duplex over the previous ten years.

2007: Grado, Italy, was the locationfor the 7th Duplex World event.Organisers were again the ItalianAssociation of Metallurgy, with MrJacques Charles in the chair. Theirmessage was clear: “In highly corrosiveenvironments, a substantial growth ofduplex applications is expected.” Theconference also addressed topicalissues, such as fracture toughness, formability, and susceptibility to HISC.
