Key Points

3

▪ AP trends over time: Our long-term trend is that the number of AP exams taken has risen substantially whilepass rates have held steady or increased. Our current pass rate is 77% (up from 75% last year); the number ofexams taken fell slightly.

Slide 6

▪ AP pass rates by school: pass rates range from 72-86% at all schools except Sammamish (Sammamish was theonly school last year to see a substantial increase in AP exam pass rates and is now at 59%, comparable to thenational average of 58%).

▪ 94% of BSD graduates have taken at least one AP/IB course (up from 90% the prior year).

▪ The average number of AP and/or IB credits earned by graduates is 6.7, and ranges from 4.7-9.4 credits pergraduate (up from 3.4-5.6 four years ago).

Slide 7

▪ AP course enrollment gaps: We have reduced the disparity in AP course enrollment by student characteristics. The disparity is now at most 2 points across groups, with the exception of Asian students (Asian studentsrepresent 36% of the high school population and account for 39% of AP course enrollment) and studentsreceiving special education services (who represent 10% of the high school population but only 6% of AP courseenrollments). However, there are still disparities in the percent of students who take AP tests by group.

Slide 8

Slide 10

▪ Achievement gaps: There continue to be large disparities in pass rates across groups. For instance, the pass rateis 83% for Asian students, 74% for White students, 60% for Hispanic students, and 50% for Black students. Low-income students have an average pass rate of 57%, and students receiving special education services average54%.

Slides 9-10

▪ Individual AP course exam pass rates and test-taking rates vary widely across schools and subjects. It is hard todraw conclusions about the meaning of this variation since so many factors affect these indicators (i.e.,alignment of course curriculum to AP standards; student motivation in taking the course; teacher experienceand philosophy about AP courses and exams; student preparation levels).

How to interpret the test-taking statistics: An example

Asian students took 3,949 AP exams in 2016-17, accounting for 49% of all AP exams taken in the district. Asian students represent 35% of the high school student population, so the percent of Asian AP test-takers is disproportionately high.

What percent of students in an AP class take the AP exam? (Spring 2017)

Notes: This table is for selected AP classes where it is possible to approximate enrollment. Interlake numbers are not

included for most courses because it is difficult to determine enrollment between AP and IB classes.

It is possible for a course to have more than 100% of students taking the AP exam because students do not need to be

enrolled in the course in order to take the exam. 12

We continue our work on:

• Encouraging advanced level courses during the registration process.

• Providing support structures along the way, including K-12 articulated curriculum that leads to advanced level courses.

• Helping students balance their course loads to maintain rigor while keeping workloads reasonable.

Interlake High School IB/AP Course Status This report was initially written in January 2016, and updated January 2018

This report addresses the following questions asked by School Board members: Is Interlake going to continue to offer AP? If so, for which courses and for what estimated time frame? Is the intent to go to full IB, meaning there would be no AP? If so, why no IB/AP? Could students still take the AP exam if they preferred and would they be prepared? If so, in what courses? Yes, Interlake will continue to offer AP courses. There are no plans or intent to stop offering AP classes. Currently, Interlake offers IB classes, AP classes and hybridized IB/AP classes. As part of growing and increasing access to the IB program, Interlake’s priority will be to add IB courses over time as needed to expand student options in each diploma category. Possible additions include IB Computer Science (it may be hybridized with Special Topics in Computer Science if the curriculum align) and IB Economics. In 2016-17, Interlake offered 38 IB courses. All World Language courses are IB, which accounts for 22 of the 38. Interlake added AP Human Geography in 2014-15. As of 2016-17, all 9th grade students take AP Human Geography. There are no immediate plans to add any additional AP courses, other than AP Intro to Computer Science if there is enough interest.

AP Courses as of 2017-18 School Year 1. AP Human Geography 2. AP World History 3. AP Computer Science 4. AP Chemistry 5. AP Statistics 6. AP Chemistry

We are in the process of examining our hybridized IB/AP classes to determine if they should remain as a hybridized course, be separated into an AP class and an IB class, or remain only as an AP class or IB class. Both IB and AP curriculum has changed over time (IB curriculum is on a 7-year revision cycle), meaning that once hybridized courses may not overlap any longer. It places a great deal of stress on students and teachers to cover an IB syllabus and an AP syllabus in one year. Interlake currently offers 8 IB/AP hybrid courses (listed below). IB/AP hybrids work when the required course syllabi for each class align and overlap sufficiently for the content of each course to be taught in enough depth for students to be successful on either an IB test or an AP test. There are some courses where we have removed the IB/AP hybrid.

• For 2016-17, IB/AP Chemistry SL was offered only as AP Chemistry. There was not sufficient class time to meet the lab requirements of IB, and the Chemistry teachers felt that AP Chemistry prepared students better for college level Chemistry in American universities. Few students (12 in 2015-16) used IB Chemistry SL as one of their diploma options, and there are three other options in that IB category for students to use for their diploma (Physics, Biology, and Environmental Science.)

• For the 2018-19 school year, Interlake will again offer IB Chemistry. The course will be a two-year sequence. The course will not be hybridized with AP Chemistry.

Page 21: Advanced Placement & International Baccalaureate Update › wa › bsd405 › Board.nsf › files › AVJL4J… · Advanced Placement & International Baccalaureate Update Board Presentation

• Over the past few years, the AP designation has been removed from IB Level 5 Spanish, French and Chinese. These IB courses do not teach the AP syllabus required to label the course as ‘AP’. However, students often opt to take the AP exam with strong pass rates. (As growth in the World Language program continues, AP French Language and AP Spanish Language are being added in as separate courses for 2018-19, but these are not combined with IB courses.)

• For the 2016-17 school year, the ‘AP Language’ designation was removed from IB Language and Literature and IB Literature. These IB courses do not teach the AP syllabus required to label the course as ‘AP’. (This is not new, they never have taught the syllabus and it has not been accurate to label the course as AP.) Many students do choose to take the AP Language exam with strong pass rates. The course catalog for 2016-17 stated, “Students in this course will be prepared to take the AP English Language exam in May, if they choose.”

• Starting the 2017-18 school year, IB Calculus SL and HL are separate from AP Calculus. The courses we now offer are: IB Calculus SL2, IB Calculus HL1, IB Calculus HL2, and AP Calculus AB.

Current IB/AP hybrid courses: 1. IB History HL1/AP US History 2. IB History HL2/AP US Government 3. IB Biology HL/AP Biology 4. IB Physics SL1/AP Physics 1 5. IB Physics SL 2/AP Physics 2 6. IB Physics HL/AP Physics 2 7. IB Environmental Systems and Societies/AP Environmental Science 8. IB Visual Arts SL/AP Art Portfolio
