Our Vision: Portrait of a Graduate & Differentiation for All Students

OUR VISION

WHAT IS ADVANCED MATH?

“Advanced Mathematics is a course where students receive instruction on at least 80% of the above grade level curriculum. For example, a fourth grader in Advanced Mathematics Grade 4 receives instruction on at least 80% of the fifth grade standards.”

WHY

• Provide access to eligible students to the Advanced Math curriculum if they have developed the cognitive skills needed to be successful

ADVANCED MATH VS. AAP

• Advanced Math is a COURSE; AAP Level IV is a PROGRAM

• AAP Level IV program includes the Advanced Math course as part of the instructional sequence

• Eligibility for Advanced Math class is unrelated to AAP selection processes

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE DESIGNATED AS AN ADVANCED MATH STUDENT?• Student receives his or her instruction in a dedicated class or in a

grade-level class through differentiation and instructional groupings

• Student receives at least 80% of the above-grade-level curriculum along with current grade-level curriculum, as needed

• Student has a SiS designation for Advanced Mathematics

• Student takes the assigned Mathematics SOL assessment (Grade 3 – third grade SOL, Grade 4 – fourth grade SOL, Grade 5 – sixth grade SOL, Grade 6 – seventh grade SOL)

SELECTION PROCESS

1. Initial Screening - Initial pool of students with CogAT quantitative scores >115 and math SOL Scores >500 (or MRA scores > 90% for 3rd graders) selected for additional screening

2. Referrals - Additional screening also available for students with scores below the benchmarks stated above (or without testing data available) via parent referral or teacher referral

3. Data Collection - Additional data collected on students in screening pool, including a Mathematics Behavior Rating Score (MBRS) and an assessment of mastery of current year standards (for example, a 4th grade applicant would take an assessment of all 4th grade math standards, as Advanced Math instruction would be provided primarily on 5th grade standards)

SELECTION PROCESS CONTINUED

4. Committee Review - Spring Hill Advanced Math Selection Committee reviews ALL data points for each applicant to decide eligibility for Advanced Math

5. Eligibility - Parents notified of eligibility and given option to enroll child in Advanced Math

6. Instruction - Advanced Math instruction begins on November 7

MATHEMATICS BEHAVIORS FOR SUCCESS

Consistent demonstration of the following:

• Using multiple representations of math concepts (e.g. objects, words, pictures, symbols)

• Explaining mathematical thinking

• Asking questions to extend understanding

• Persevering in the face of challenging problems

• Listening to and understanding the mathematical thinking of peers

• Building upon prior knowledge

• Making mathematical connections

• Looking for patterns

• Applying a variety of strategies to solve problems

• Grasping new concepts easily

DELIVERY OF ADVANCED MATHEMATICS INSTRUCTION

• TBD – Dependent on number of students found eligible at each grade

• Push-in with AAP math class

• New class section created

• Content delivered by teacher in mixed-ability classroom

WHAT IF MY CHILD ISN’T IN ADVANCED MATH?

• THAT’S OK! - The priority is a strong foundation of number sense and mathematical understanding.

• Students in EVERY math class receive differentiated instruction, including extension activities and exposure to grade-above standards, as appropriate.

• Advanced Mathematics is NOT a prerequisite for Math 7 Honors in middle school.

• Advanced Math placement will be reviewed each spring for the following school year.

TIMELINE

• October 4 – Advanced Mathematics Information Session for Parents (6:00pm)

• October 12 - Deadline for parent referrals

• October 15–19 – Additional testing/screening for students

• October 22-26 – Spring Hill math committee meets to discuss student records and make placement decisions

• October 26 - Parents notified of committee decisions; given choice to enroll if student found eligible

• November 2 - Parent decision for eligible students due back to school

• November 7 (First day of Q2) - Advanced math class instruction begins
