MARIE WILSON, M.D. Physician/Psychotherapist Private Practice, Edmonton, Alberta Dr.MarieWilsonisaphysicianwho,followingpost-graduatetraininginindividual,marital,andfamilytherapy,haslimitedherpracticetopsychotherapysince1987.Atthesuggestionoftheconsultantshewasworkingwithatthetime,shepursuedEricksonianfocusedtraininginhypnosisbeginningin1991.Inanefforttofindmoreeffectivewaysofhelpingherclientsintheirownhealing,ayearlatershebegandevelopingthehypnosisbased,traumatherapyprotocolthatshehassincenamedtheRe-DefinitionofSelfProcess(RDSProcess).Thisprotocolhasevolvedovertimetobeaveryspecific,easilytaught,learned,andeffectivefour-stepprotocolfortraumaresolution.

Throughlifeexperiences,individualscometodefinethemselves.Someofthedefinitionsofselfthattheytakeonarelearnedinacontextofpowerlessnessandfear,traumaexperiences.Thesedefinitionslimittheindividualovertimeastheircontextschange.Dr.Wilsonhasusedthisprotocoltotreatindividualspresentingwithamyriadofcomplaints,astheirsymptomsariseinresponsetohowtheyhavecometoknowthemselvesandexperiencetheirlimitations.Clientswithhistoriesoftrauma(psychological,physical,sexual)orneglectmaypresentwithdisorders,definedbytheirsymptomatology,ofdepression,anxiety,phobias,obsessivecompulsivedisorder,borderlinepersonalitydisorder,dissociativeidentitydisorder,post-traumaticstressdisorder,substanceabuse/addiction,sexualdysfunction,andmaritalorfamilyconflict.Inherclinicalpractice,shehasfoundthistherapeuticprocessusefulinworkingwithallofthesepresentations.

Dr.Wilsonhasbeenpresentingworkshopsonthisprotocolnationally,beginninginAlbertainBanffin1994,followedbyFrontiersandregionalsocietyconferencesinCanada,andinternationallyatthemeetingsofASCH,SCEH,ISHandtheISSTDtraumasociety.Aswell,shehasbeenanannualpresenterforasocietyinMexicosince1999,offeringconferenceworkshopsaswellasmoreextensiveweekendtrainingcourses.Dr.WilsonhaspublishedpapersonthissubjectinthejournalHypnos,theformerJournaloftheSwedishSocietyofClinicalHypnosis,in1996,1999,and2005.ThelastpaperalsocomparedthestructureandpurposeofherprotocoltothatofEMDR.

Date: FridayMay26,2017Time: 9:00a.m.–4:30p.m.Location: DENInthisIntermediate/AdvancedWorkshop,Dr.Wilsonwilldescribetheevolutionofahypnosis-basedfour-steptraumatherapyprotocol,there-definitionofSelfProcess(RDSProcess),andthetheorythathassupporteditsdevelopment.Asrecentlyas1991,traumamemorieswerethoughttobeindelible,unchangeableintermsoftheirpsychologicalimpactonanindividual.Sincethattime,basicbiologicalresearchhascometodefinehowtraumamemoriesarelearnedandstoredinthebrainandmoreimportantlyhowtheycanbeaccessedandchanged.Mostnon-emotionallearningiseasilymodified,butthelearningthatisbasedinfearisaboutsurvivalandismeanttobepermanent;youdon’twanttohavetogetburnedtwice!Dr.Wilsonwillreviewthespecificpathwaythathasbeenidentifiedtoactivate,access,update,andsolidifynewlearningthatpermanentlychangesthebiologicstructureandretentionoftraumamemoryexperiences.ThisresearchhasbeenappliedtohowPTSDisbothtreatedandpreventedinahandfulofstudieswithpeopleoverthepastfewyears.Dr.Wilsonwillidentifythisspecificpathwayinactioninthisprotocol,whichmaybetheexplanationforitseffectivenesswithclients.Thedetailsoftheprotocolwillbedescribedtotheparticipants.Handoutswillaccompanyallofthismaterial,allowingtheparticipantstohavetakeawaysthatareapplicableintheirownwork.Dr.Wilsonwillshowavideoofthisprotocolusedwithaclient,aswellasdoaroleplaydemonstrationwithavolunteerwhoiswillingtoplaythepartofaclient,utilizingtheirownclinicalexperiencesinthecreationofthispseudoclient.Participantswillbeintroducedtoarapidinductionexercisethattheycanpracticeintheworkshop.Thisisamodificationoftheoneusedintheprotocolthatwilldemonstratehowquicklyclientscanengageintheprocess.Inthefinalportionoftheworkshop,participantswillbeabletoutilizetheprotocolinarole-playpracticum.Participantswillberequiredtohavepreparedtworole-playscenarios,drawnfromtheirclinicalexperience,whichtheywilluseinthepracticeexperience.Itwouldbeusefuliftheseclinicalscenariosrepresenteddifferentclientissues,suchasanxiety,phobias,substanceabuse,maritalorfamilyconflict,orvariousformsoftrauma.Groupsofthreeindividualswill,inrotation,playthepartsofclient,therapist,andcoach.Dr.Wilsonwillprovideassistanceandsupervisionofthepracticum.Finally,iftimepermits,participantswillbeofferedinstructionandpracticeintheuseofanexercisethatfacilitatesgrieving,asgrievingisanessentialpartoflettinggoofthelossesexperiencedwithtrauma.Insummary,thecoursewillinclude:-ReviewofthetheorysupportingthedevelopmentoftheRDSProcess-Reviewoftherecentresearchintotheaccessingandupdatingoftraumamemories-Detaileddescriptionofthetraumatherapyprotocol-Videodemonstrationoftheuseoftheprotocol-Role-playdemonstrationoftheuseoftheprotocolwithavolunteer-Participantexperienceintheuseoftherapidinductiontechniqueoftheprotocol-Practicumexperienceintheuseoftheprotocol-Participantexperienceintheuseofagriefresolutionexercise

This hands-on workshop will provide scientific rationale for integrating cognitive, hypnotic, mindfulness andpsychodynamic strategies in themanagement of clinical depression. Theworkshopwill be invaluable for therapistswishing to expand their understanding, clinical skills and expertise in the management of clinical depression. Thefollowingtherapeuticstrategieswillbediscussed,demonstratedandillustratedbycaseexamples:
