Learning at any time of life has never been
easier with the launch of a new range of
exciting courses from North Tyneside
Council and Tyne Metropolitan College.
This new prospectus offers courses to
improve your existing skills, enhance job
prospects or simply try out something
new. Courses run in the daytime and in
the evenings in your local community. If
you want to study around work and family
why not try one of our distance learning
courses.
In addition to trying something new,
learning new skills can have a positive

North Tyneside Council’s Adult Learning
Service has recently received a good
report from Ofsted. The report recognises
the high quality of teaching and support
for adult learners and apprentices;
providing a wide range of courses that
meet local employers’ and residents’
needs with a high proportion of learners
progressing into employment.

Elected Mayor Norma Redfearn CBE said, “This is

Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships are a fantastic opportunity,
providing you with a path into work, as well as
gaining qualifications to help further your career.
For young people aged 16-18 who don’t want to
stay in full-time education, apprenticeships are a
great way to earn while they learn. Adult
apprenticeships are perfect for those looking to
get into work, progress in their career or change
jobs completely and try something new.
The council offers a wide range of apprenticeships
across our borough, as well as within our
organisation.
Since the introduction of the council’s
apprenticeship scheme in 2013, 133 apprentices
have started their journey into work with the
council, with 76% securing further employment
with either the local authority or another
organisation.
Among the apprentices starting over the last few
years there has been an increased number of
people declaring physical or learning disabilities.
The percentage of apprentices employed with
disabilities has increased from 1% in 2015, to
5.8% in 2017. All applicants who declared such
disabilities were given interviews.

19+ AdvancedLearner Loan
If you are aged 19 or above, and are interested
in studying at Level 3 or above you may be
eligible for help with fees.
An Advanced Learner Loan is government
funded and provides help with your course fees.
It is easy to apply for:-
1. It does not take your household income
into account
2. Does not involve a credit check
3. Repayments will not start until you are
earning over £25,000 a year.
Am I eligiblefor an AdvancedLearner Loan?
• Most learners aged 19 and over who are
studying Level 3, 4, 5 and 6 Further
Education Certificates or Diplomas will qualify.
If you are between 19 and 23 years old and
do not currently hold a full Level 3 qualification
you may be able to study a Level 3
qualification for free.
• The following individuals are eligible for an
Advanced learner Loan:
• Aged 19 or over at the start of your
course
• Resident in the UK for three years prior
to the start of the course
• Studying with a Education Skills Funded
Agency approved provider (such as the
Adult Learning Service or Tyne
Metropolitan College)
• Undertaking an eligible Level 3, 4, 5 or 6
Further education course as identified by
the Education Skills Funding Agency
• Able to maintain minimum attendance
throughout the duration of the course.

How much willI receive if I takeout a loan?
The amount you can borrow depends on
the type of course and the course fees,
however the minimum amount you can
apply for is £300. You don’t have to borrow
the full cost of your course – you can pay
for some of it yourself.
How will I repaythe loan?
You will not start making repayments until you
are earning £25,000 per year. If your loan is for
an Access to Higher Education programme and
you progress to complete a Higher Education
programme you will not have to repay your loan.

Advanced LearnerLoans Bursary Fund
The Bursary is to support students who have an
approved Learner Loan in place and have an
annual household income of less than £25,000.
The Bursary is used to support students with:
• Travel
• Childcare
• Course materials
• Classroom assistance for a disability or
learning difficulty.
How do I apply?
The quickest way to apply is online. You will
need to use the details in your learning and
funding information letter provided by your
training provider or college. The Student Loans
Company can take up to five days to process
your application.

Constructing the workforce of the future
A new £2.6m construction training centre will
deliver a skills boost to the region and help
build better careers for young people, North
Tyneside’s Elected Mayor, Norma Redfearn CBE
has predicted.
Norma Redfearn said the flagship TMC facility
at Tyne Metropolitan College’s Coast Road
campus in Wallsend will provide key support to
the North East’s construction sector by
targeting skills’ development.
Over the next five years, construction is
expected to become the fastest growing
employment sector in the country – with current
growth figures predicting the creation of over
168,500 jobs nationally. However, the sector is
facing a shortage of skills, across a range of
trades.
TMC will help address the skills gap, offering a
range of trades’ training include bricklaying,
plastering, dry-lining, painting and decorating,
plumbing, joinery, and electrical engineering.
The two-storey construction centre houses the
latest industry equipment as well as IT facilities,
classrooms, learning hubs and demo areas. It
gives students the opportunity to learn the
practical skills, knowledge and theory they need
in the best facilities in the north east, boasting
the widest range of construction trades’
training.
Programmes of study – including
apprenticeships - are available to schoolleavers,
with flexible adult and part time courses
for adults looking to re-train, upskill or begin a
career.
Overall, it specialises in delivering the hands-on
skills that equip learners for work in
construction and building services across the
region.
It welcomed its first students in September and
the Elected Mayor, who took part in the ground-
breaking last summer, returned in March to
unveil an official opening plaque.
Norma Redfearn said: “The construction and
opening of this centre marks a significant
milestone in the future development of much-
needed skills in this sector in the North East.
“It is investment which demonstrates that the
region is tackling issues around skills and is
prepared to support its young people.
“I took part in the ground-breaking last year that
signalled the start of construction of this facility,
and I’m delighted to return to officially open it.”
Thomas Metcalfe is one of the students taking
advantage of the new facilities. Thomas, is
studying a Level 3 Electrical Installations
Apprenticeship with North Tyneside Council.
“I started a course in IT when I left school but
realised I was more suited to hands on learning.
That’s when I decided I wanted to take up an
apprenticeship. I love the mix of industry
experience, knowledge and skills – and putting
that in to practice at work.”
Michael Marvell, was made redundant from his
previous job. After trying one or two different
jobs he is now studying a Level 2 in Joinery
with TMC.
“This opportunity is perfect for me as I enjoy
practical, hands on work. The new building
is great, it has the latest industry standard
equipment along with experienced staff with
a wealth of knowledge. I would highly
recommend studying a trade with TMC.”

English and maths
The Adult Learning Service has a wide
range of English and maths courses
available across North Tyneside at all levels
up to Functional Skills Level 2. The majority
of these courses are free. Classes are
delivered in small friendly groups and you
will be fully supported to achieve your best
and progress onto other courses.
You can start a Functional Skills course
at any time in the year. GCSE English and
maths courses begin in September, but
you can prepare for these in advance by
enrolling onto a Functional Skills
programme in the summer. Courses run
on various days and times to fit in with
your life and work. All courses give you
the opportunity to gain a qualification.
Distance Learningfor 19+
Trying to study around work and family
can be hard. Why not study flexibly
through distance learning?
North Tyneside Council’s Adult Learning
Service has a number of accredited
distance learning courses which could
suit you. Whether you are looking to up
skill or expand your horizons why not
take a look at what we offer in the
course listings.
Mindfulness
Would you like to:
• Learn how to reduce stress and anxiety
• Enjoy the world around you
• Experience things afresh
• Stop being controlled by repetitive negative thinking
• Celebrate the present rather than the past.
Our mindfulness course will help you to understand
and be able to practice this contemporary therapy
and life skill concept; we have courses running
throughout the year across the borough.
Functional Skills English and maths
• Daytimes and evenings throughout the week
• Convenient locations
• Small classes.
Study English and maths at a level to suit you
and gain a nationally recognised qualification.
You will be fully supported to do your best.
GCSE English and maths
• 30 sessions
• Evening sessions
• Small classes.
These courses cover all essential topics for you
to gain a GCSE qualification.

Vanessa’sapprenticeship
Vanessa Phillips is employedas an Elected Mayor andCabinet Support Officer
Vanessa started a Level 3 Business
Administration apprenticeship in the Elected
Mayor’s Office which led to a permanent post.
Vanessa has since completed a Level 4 Diploma
in Business and Administration and is about to
start a Level 4 Diploma in Project Management.
Vanessa said:“Leaving school seemed so daunting and I didn’t
really know what I wanted to do. Apprenticeships
provide real work experience and training, so this
seemed like it was right for me.”
Vanessas’s employer said:“It was great that the Elected Mayor chose to have
the first directly employed apprentice in her office.
Having this position in the team allowed us to think
about the work that we do and offered a fresh
approach and younger perspective.”
Emily’sapprenticeship
Emily Rutherford is employed byPercy Main Primary School as anApprentice Teaching Assistant
In her role Emily supports children with complex needs;
using various methods to support their learning and
development. She has gained knowledge and
understanding of how children develop, the national
curriculum and child protection to include safeguarding,
allowing her to support the children in the most effective way.
Emily said:“I have gained a lot of experience in my apprenticeship.
I’ve gained more knowledge and boosted my confidence.
I enjoy being a part of the Early Years team as everyone
is very supportive.”
Emily’s employer said:“Emily has worked hard to develop her skills to become a great Teaching Assistant. She’s gained
experience in class and worked with a range of children. She’s committed to seeing students
make progress and has a professional and caring attitude. She’s an asset to our school!”

Tayyib AbuPainting and DecoratingApprenticeship
Tayyib Abu, from Heaton, has transformed his lifethrough painting and decorating programmesat Tyne Metropolitan College.
Before coming to TyneMet, he admits he lacked the drive and ambition
to succeed, aspects of his life that have changed since enrolling.
It was a phone call from TyneMet painting and decorating lecturer Dave
Metcalfe that truly inspired him to take up a new skills challenge.
My career was going nowhere. I was moving from job-to-job, and none
were very satisfactory. Then I found TyneMet College.
“Where once I flitted from job-to-job, including warehousing, I’m now
learning a highly skilled occupation. I got in touch with TyneMet to find out
about its painting and decorating courses and very quickly lecturer Dave
Metcalfe got back in touch to ask me to come in to see the facilities.
“Straight away, it was obvious how enthusiastic TyneMet’s lecturers were
about the opportunities the college could give me - that inspired me to find
out more. Staff at TyneMet really want you to do well and they give you all
the support you need to achieve. They make you feel at ease and
comfortable with what you are learning.
“I’ve loved every minute of my time at TyneMet, especially the hands-on
practical side, but even the theory part of my courses have been enjoyable.
What I like best about painting and decorating is adding the finishing
touches to jobs, including doing the skirting boards, and I even enjoy taking
wallpaper off.
“I secured an apprenticeship with South Tyneside Homes, the housing arm
of South Tyneside Council. My apprenticeship is a great opportunity for me
to get ahead, I am learning skills that are adding to those that TyneMet has
taught me. My future is now very bright.

Mata’sapprenticeship
Mata worked at North Tyneside Councilon a voluntary basis before startingan apprenticeship.
Mata now has a permanent post in electoral services
and is gaining experience and a more in-depth
understanding of how the council works.
Mata said:“The apprenticeship experience in a range of different
settings has improved my understanding greatly as
well as my grasp of the English language. I now
have the confidence to carry out my full-time
permanent role at North Tyneside Council.”
Mata’s employer said:“Mata gained a wide range of skills, knowledge and
experience from her apprenticeship. This means she
is in an excellent position to be able to take on the
permanent role within Electoral Services.”
Kate’sapprenticeship
Kate is a business admin apprenticewith North Tyneside Council’shousing growth team.
Kate has many different duties including visiting houses
for possible purchase by North Tyneside Development
Company, meeting new tenants and reviewing progress
at Northumberland Square, The Avenues and Wallington
Court developments.
Kate said:“My apprenticeship allows me to gain understanding of the
working world and gain a qualification. I have gained so
much knowledge that will help me in my future from things
like my communication skills to writing reports.”
Kate’s employer said:“The value of having an apprentice is the speed it
takes to train a person in the technical and the
softer relationships skills required when growing
a productive team.”

The Adult Learning Service provides a wide range
of courses to support 16-25 year olds who have
an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and
require additional support in preparing for
adulthood and employment.
We offer a supported pathway model enabling
you to develop your life skills, explore what is
meant by independence and living independently.
You will learn to participate positively in your local
community, take part in a real work placement
which will prepare you for the world of work.
There are different entry points depending on
the level of support required, with staged
progression building upon your areas of
interest and aspirations helping you to develop
the knowledge and skills from your work
placement. Our progression routes include:
• Project Choice Internships
• Further education
• Apprenticeships
• Volunteering
• Full or part-time employment

ProjectManagement
The project manager role is becoming increasingly more
important in a modern business setting in numerous
sectors such as business administration, IT,
construction and engineering.
Project managers are responsible for making sure tasks
are delivered on time, on budget and within scope.
A good project manager needs to have excellent
interpersonal skills with communication being the single
most important one.
A project manager makes sure those with
responsibilities for delivering a particular aspect of a
project know what is expected from them and when
they need to deliver it.
They play an integral role in supporting organisational
objectives through a wide range of functions such as
planning, allocating & monitoring the work of a team,
supporting team members, managing conflict, resolving
problems, agreeing budgets and managing customer
service.

The effective giving of advice and guidance is being
embraced by more and more by businesses and
voluntary organisations as they look to improve the
quality of communication with customers, colleagues
and stakeholders. These specialist skills are sought after
in many different settings and achieving this qualification
could enhance your career prospects in a wide range of
advice and guidance roles including:
• Receptionist/administrator
• Business advisor
• Training/human resources advisor
• Citizens Advice Bureau staff member
• Advice provider within educational settings
If your current role involves giving advice and guidance
directly to clients then this qualification could be for
you. The qualification covers: communications and
interactions to support clients to achieve their goals;
working with other services through negotiation, liaison
and referral and the knowledge required to work within
legislative and procedural frameworks.
