    By helping otherswe’re helping ourselves

One goal of programming at LIfe Enrichment is to help every-one feel needed and useful. LEC’s staff tries to find ways for participants to give to others. Two recent programs are good examples. The ladies of LEC made tutus for the Girls on the Run Junebug Jam. Teaching us how were YMCA staffers Lori Paterno and Melanie Beier. The purpose of Girls on the Run is to promote self-esteem among young girls. They will be wearing these tutus during the June 5K race in Shelby.

LEC partici-pant Earlene Weaver, above center, holds dresses like participants are making for little girls in impov-erished coun-tries through a program called “Dress a Girl Around the World.” Denise Fisher, top right, of Rag Bag, the local sponsor, brought the patterns and samples of the dresses. Above left is Lisa Ward, N.C. representa-tive for Dress a Girl, who told of her work in Uganda, where LEC’s dresses will be going in July.

Melanie Beier of the YMCA admires Ferne’s creation.

Lori Paterno, standing, and LEC participant Vivian make loops for a tutu.

LEC Program Assistant Teresa Crawford, left, and Louise and Ruth work on a tutu.

Dear Friends, I am a “Volunteer Greeter” at the Life Enrichment Center in Shelby, and I invite you to become one, too. Can you spare three hours a week...once a month...twice a week, or whatever works for you? Would you like to experi-ence being in an environment with folks who do WHATEVER IT TAKES? Can you SMILE? OK, then being a Greeter is for you!!! Greeting at LEC does not mean “hands on” activities with participants. It simply means GREETING PEOPLE WHO EN-TER THE FRONT DOOR...WITH A SMILE AND A WARM WELCOME, including participants and family members who walk their loved ones into activity areas, visitors, program pre-senters, and even the mailman. SMILE,SMILE, SMILE is what Greeters at LEC do, and wind up feeling good all over! Please consider being a VOLUNTEER GREETER For details, call me at 704.487.1589, or Donna at LEC at 484.0405. Leave a message with Patti if Donna is not available. Waiting to hear from you, Anne Shaw

Volunteer Greeter Kaye Hartman, left, welcomes Jean Dover and her aunt Faye Kennedy to Life Enrichment .

Would you like a heart-warming volunteer opportunity?
