TitleHillingdon Adult and Community Learning (HACL) is part of Hillingdon Council. We offer opportunities for adults across the borough to learn new skills, discover their potential and achieve their goals.

Learn to be Well research projectAround one quarter of British adults, experience a mental health problem in their lives. Anxiety, sleeplessness and depression are the most common disorders, with around eight per cent of the population suffering from anxiety and eight per cent from depression. This is equivalent to more than eight million people in England alone. Research has identified that there can be a range of positive impacts on wellbeing as a result of participating in mainstream community learning courses.

For some, the symptoms of depression, sleeplessness and anxiety can hamper the ability to enjoy and make the most of their lives. Recovery comes in small steps. You’ll see by reading what other learners have to say on page 10 that recovery successes have come in a variety of ways.

These courses are designed to build (or re-build) your confidence and to help you develop coping strategies for everyday situations. They are about self-help and practical positive things you can do to improve your wellbeing and manage things like having trouble sleeping, stress, finding it hard to go out, worrying, feeling anxious, sad or a bit low.

If you are interested in being part of this research, we will ask you to help us find out what difference these courses make by asking you to fill in some mood and wellbeing questionnaires, firstly to see if you are eligible. If you are, we will ask you to sign a written consent to let us use the information you give us and we will ask you to fill in the same mood and wellbeing questionnaires while you are on your course and at the end.

To thank you for being involved, your course will be free.

The other good news is, if the research finds that these courses help people, then not only will you be doing something positive for yourself but you will also be helping others, maybe including someone you care about.

See page 8 for a full list of our Learn to be Well courses.

Tips for starting to focus on your wellbeingIt’s often difficult to get started or motivated, so start in small steps and arrange activities at gradual levels to improve your self-confidence and build up self-esteem.

• Do what you enjoy. Plan activities with friends and family that are enjoyable, you are interested in or have been interested in in the past.

• It is important to socialise and stay in contact with others. This will improve wellbeing and lead to further opportunities to interact.

• Make plans and look ahead. Introduce a new hobby or become more active. Go for a walk or exercise once a day. Attend a meeting or take part in one of our classes.

Hillingdon Adult and Community Learning supports ‘Reading Well Books’ at Hillingdon LibrariesReading Well Books on Prescription is a national scheme providing self-help reading for adults with a range of common mental health conditions including anxiety, stress, sleeplessness and some eating disorders.

The books are based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and have been recommended by experts. They provide useful information to help you understand your condition, as well as step-by-step strategies and techniques to make

positive changes. The collection is stocked in selected Hillingdon libraries, with free reservations available at other branches. Visit www.hillingdon.gov.uk/libraries.

Enrolling on a coursePlease read this important information before enrolling

Please be aware you can only enrol on one long course in this programme. We also offer further support through a range of one-day courses (see page 8).

You may self-refer or be referred by your GP, nurse, carer or keyworker. Even a family member or friend can help you to book onto a course.

Before you enrol, you need to take part in an advice session, where we will discuss the courses and you need to fill in a mood and wellbeing questionnaire to find out if you’re eligible. These are very short and have a tick box format. To arrange an appointment to do this call 020 834 4170, email [email protected] or visit South Ruislip Adult Learning Centre.

If you are eligible to take part, we will ask you to sign a written consent (so that we can use the information you provide us through the questionnaire for research) and we will ask you to fill in the same questionnaire at several stages during the course.

You can bring a friend with you for support throughout the course to enable them to improve their wellbeing. They can enrol with you as a buddy. Please note that they will also need to complete the mood and wellbeing questionnaire.

Information Advice and GuidanceDuring your time with us, we will be offering the services of information advice and guidance according to your needs, to enable you to progress further onto learning with us and beyond.

Maria’s story*Maria came to HACL after a battle with anxiety following the death of her father. She also developed a long term health condition a year later. After trying many things to overcome her anxiety, she found out about the yoga and relaxation course offered as part of the Learn to be Well programme.

Despite thinking that yoga was not for her, she decided to give it a go and said she found the tutor fantastic, as she took into account all Maria’s specific learner goals and supported her throughout her time on the course. She said that the environment felt safe and the support she received was tailored to her abilities.

Since undertaking the course, Maria has been using the breathing techniques that she has learned to help her when she’s feeling stressed and anxious and it enabled her to focus better. Having relaxation sessions at the end of the classes meant that she left feeling calm and refreshed. The benefits weren’t just limited to her mental health; she has also found that she is feeling better all-round, especially as she previously suffered from a back condition, which has now improved.

Looking to the future, Maria is hoping to join a yoga class to continue what she has learnt and enjoy the benefits that yoga brings.

She said: “The Learn to be Well course was the start of the journey for me and I would wholeheartedly recommend it to others. There is nothing to lose and so much that you can gain!”

What our learners said

Anusha GunturuAnusha came to the UK five years ago with her family after working in Australia for two years as an IT analyst. Her educational

background is in engineering.

She came to HACL as she wanted to return to work. She had felt lonely and lacked the confidence needed to start making the steps to employment. Following her son’s birth she had spent some time at home looking after him. She enrolled onto the Getting Ahead in Employment course along with Belly Dancing as an added enjoyment.

She said about her experience:“I have made a lot of friends and learnt new things.”

Anusha attended courses every Friday and with her tutor’s help has learnt to write a CV and will take new recruitment and job finding knowledge with her.

Anusha is now working part-time in administration but has said that her long-term goal is to get a career doing what she loves within the IT sector as a software engineer. She said: “The council is providing lots of courses that are worthwhile. It’s never too late to study.”

Ann’s storyprovided by HACL after discovering the brochure of courses at her local library.

She did courses in Pottery, Gardening, Yoga, Aromatherapy and Reflexology, and would definitely recommend them to others.

As a result of the programme, she has found the confidence to tackle new challenges, made friends and is motivated to continue with a programme of learning.

Ann also decided to apply for the HACL Learner Council and was elected earlier this year. The Learner Council has not only made Ann feel more confident but she also enjoys being able to provide a learner voice and represent her fellow peers.

She is now hoping to go onto further study and complete another gardening course.

She said: “Sign up for some of the courses and give them a try. I know it can be rather daunting trying something new, but believe me when I say you really have nothing to lose and possibly everything to gain.”

Ann had worked part-time with women and their children in a variety of situations, but after qualifying with a Diploma in Childcare and

Education and working full-time, she decided to try something new. She worked supporting vulnerable adults with mental health issues and then moved to a children’s centre, where she worked with children and their families with additional needs before retiring to focus on her wellbeing.

Ann said that although she enjoyed all aspects of her work and found it incredibly rewarding, it was exhausting and emotionally draining. Prior to working full-time she said that she felt she had a more positive work/life balance, so she embarked on the Learn to be Well programme

Amanda SmithAmanda said: “Learn to be Well courses have had a very positive effect on my mental wellbeing and are a valuable addition to medication and therapy. They encourage you to learn new skills and concentrate on something positive.

“The Easy Embroidery course was particularly rewarding. Our tutor was enthusiastic and knowledgeable. She introduced us to various techniques that were challenging but rewarding.

“There was an encouraging, safe and friendly atmosphere in the class, allowing us to develop and share ideas. I am now hoping to discover opportunities for sharing my skills with others, possibly leading to employment.”
