Audience Research Analysis

What Have You Done?

After pitching my idea to the my class mates, I then created a survey onwww.surveymonkey.com. I asked questions such as what the artist should look like, what should be in a music video and more. Here is my surveyhttp://www.surveymonkey.com/MySurvey_EditorFull.aspx?sm=sh96kYXrFjMC2NT1Ftt%2bCl4Qq0SdCwcZLqCgpoBKNeY%3d

After that I then distributed it on to Facebook, where many of my friends can access it and fill it out for me. Doing this I can get a wide range of views from people who like different genres and artists, so I know how to appeal to a mainstream audience and also how I can change some of narrative and persona to suit her voice.

Why Have You Done It?I made a survey to find out what my audience thought about the song and included them into thinking what should be in the music video, how her style should be and what relates to them personally.

I thought this is a good idea to do because it signifies what the majority of the audience want which suggest that it will sell and make profit. The survey also told me what I should include and what doesnt seem to fit.

What You Found Out?

When hearing this song (see below to listen) what 3 words do you think describe her?

What type of style best describes her voice?

Here are some the responses I got. For this results I found out that, they thought she was mainly soulful, young&emotional. This connotes that my audience should be aimed to an audience who understands her, through the lyrics, video and personality. The look I was going for with this artist was glamorised, the use of Amy Winehouse style with the thick eye-liner and this is how the majority of the audience think she should be represented like this as well.

The majority of the people thought that the 70s style best describes her and, this is also what I thought her style would be like as I wanted her to be represented as someone like Amy Winehouse but also wear bright bold colours to demonstrate her funky personality. Others thought that she should have a sophisticated look which could also work and I will put it in to consideration. With the sophisticated look I wouldnt want to over do it because it can appeal to the wrong audience such as an older audience, I would like her to look like someone like, Leona Lewis.

What grabs your attention in a music video?

Do you like fast pace jumpy shots or slow pace shots in an music video?

8 people said that in a music video they are mainly attracted to the narrative. 4 people said they are mainly attracted to what the artist is wearing and 2 people said they attracted to the song itself. As there are varied results, I would mainly focus on the narrative and I think the most important thing about the narrative is that it has to go with the beat of the song and also some of the audience should be able to relate to the narrative. As I am not using this song, I have taken that into consideration and trying to raise awareness of dieting pill and how bad they which is what the song is about Sea Kelp-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Prtqvz9XC1w.

All 17 people who took my questionnaire said that slow pace shots best fit this song and will look better in the music video, I agree with this as its about being heartbroken and gradual heeling, it also makes you emphasise with those who have lost loved ones and the remembrance of the good times shared. Slow pace shots also works because the beat is slow and its an emotional topic. This can also relate to the new song I am doing because it is also slow pace and talks about something girls are involved in whether they know it or not.

What 2 types of location would you like to see?

What celebrity would you imagine her to look like the most?

The two main types of locations that came out with the most votes were, London-Brick Lane and also in front of a blank screen by herself. These are the two locations I was going to use when filming. I chose these locations as Brick Lane is like a rough, scatty area and also has a lot of colourful graffiti which will look like the urban I was going for and also reflects back to the artists roots. In front of a blank screen with different colours spotlight and her standing there looking glamorised with bright colours such as blues and pinks was the idea I was also going for because it shows her independence and gives a vibe of Amy Winehouse.

Of course majority of the people voted her to be more like Amy Winehouse, this is because she has a deep voice, and sings jazz/soul. Although she is more like Amy Winehouse I dont want her to be an imitation of her, I want her to have her own unique style, and persona but also using Amy Winehouses trademark thick eyeliner.

What type colours suit the artist? These colours would also be represent in the branding of DVD cover and magazine Ad.

Majority said that someone with a black race would be best suited to this kind of voice, I agree with this as the voice of this artist is deep, and elongated which reminds me of someone like Jenifer Hudson.

http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTEyaUatTOP37q9QyVBKd-82E8M1FhXYKDa_Gj4GulSGdr-xDFFSwThere was a draw between the colour options that I suggested, the draw was between, Black & White and Blues, Pink & Yellows. The colours I would of gone for are the blues, pinks and yellow this is because they all go well together, they are a tad feminine which is the audience we are aiming towards, also the combination is different and bright, which would reflect her personality and clothing she will wear.

What music TV channel do you think this video would be promoted on?

How do you access watching music videos?

Majority said Kiss TV channel, I think this is an interesting option as the audience I am aiming it towards are about 16-25 who do watch kiss for music videos but I thought MTV Base would have been a popular option and it is well known and well wide which will get the video a lot of viewers.

Due to new media technology growing everyone who too my questionnaire said they access watching music videos online at YouTube. This would be a good place to promote a music video as it is cheap, will raise awareness very quickly, easy to access and download due to proliferation of content and it will always be there for everyone to access globally. However doing this means that not a lot of profit is being given.

How Will This Influence Your Production?

This will influence my production as it suggest what works in a music video and what doesnt. as I am not using this song for my coursework and I cannot tell you what I would improved on. However I can tell you what I will take into account when making a music video and how I can use these examples for the new song I will be creating a video for.

One of the thing I will use is the unique star image and persona which will relate to a niche audience but also make him stand out. The look we are going for is the indie look.

I will also use the different types of location such as the school hall, with the lightings being a spotlight of the main artist playing the piano. Also use a bathroom scene of the girl overdosing.

When aiming towards my audience I do also want to raise awareness and educate those who suffer from an eating disorder and how to overcome it, I think this will help them as it will signify that they are not alone and to seek help.

I will also certainly use slow pace shots in the music video to indicate its emotional and a true touching story.
