The script is in the style of Tours, and an origin either at Tours or in a place strongly influenced by it is likely. The text corresponds to pp. 372-92 of the printed edition of H. Keil in `Grammatici Latini', Vol. 4, with a lacuna corresponding to pp. 376-8. The work begins without a heading of f. iv, and at the end, on f. 24v, is written in uncials `Incipit edictio secunda Donati grammatici urbis Romae', apparently referring to the third book of the `Ars maior'. The text of f. 1r, erased and much faded, is an unidentified grammatical treatise. Glosses are frequent in the text and margin, some of them variant textual readings. At the end of f. 6v before the lacuna, the text is continued for seven lines, ending in mid-sentence, by a hand probably not later than the eleventh century. Across the top of ff. 11v and 12r is written the inscription, `Sadonis est iste liber, sua mater dedit illi. Magnus onor illa sit qui dedit hunc librum'. The manuscript measures 25.3 by 19.9 cms., and contains 24 leaves, consisting of gatherings of 10, 10 and 8, without catchwords. The last leaf of the last gathering is missing. Three leaves are lost between ff. 6 and 7, and probably one or more gatherings are wanting at the beginning and the end. There are 17 lines to the page, and the leaves are edged in red. The script is Carolingian, with titles of sections written in rustic capitals. Initial letters of chapters are filled in red, and at the beginning of the text of f. iv there is a 4- line initial in red, with ornamentation in black in the uncoloured vertical stem. The volume is bound in eighteenth century mottled sheepskin. The manuscript, once in the possession of Guglielmo Libri (1803-69), was sold as lot 320 in the sale of his manuscripts at Sotheby's in 1859. It was bought by Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872), and became MS. 16308 in his collection. `HISTORIA REGUM BRITANNIAE' 1976116 Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1975-76 Disgrifiad / Description A Latin text of the `Historia Regum Britanniae' of Geoffrey of Monmouth, dating from the late thirteenth century and written probably in England (NLW MS 21552B). The Vulgate text begins with the usual dedication to Robert, Earl of Gloucester, and is divided into books up to Book 8, with the incipit and explicit of each book being noted in red. When the rubrication ceases at f. 48r, book divisions are noted no further. At the beginning of Book 8, a short note on Merlin is inserted at the bottom of the page by the scribe. The manuscript, written on vellum, measures 20.2 by 15.5 cms. and contains 84 leaves, the last being blank, consisting of seven gatherings of 12 leaves, with catchwords. There are 34 lines to each page, and the text is written in double columns. Up to f. 48r, initial letters of chapters are illuminated in blue and red, with flourishes in the other colour, sometimes extending most

of the length of the page. There are 7 - line initial letters to the Prologue and Books 1, 3 and 8. The volume is bound in late eighteenth or early nineteenth century Russian, with gold tooling on the spine and around the edges of the covers. On the inside cover, pasted over the marks of a removed book plate, is that of Alexander Murray of Broughton, Wigtown in Scotland, a Member of Parliament whose death is recorded in 1750. MANUSCRIPT IDENTIFIED WITH` THELWALL' MS 1976117 Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1975-76 Disgrifiad / Description A folio manuscript volume, ff. i-iv, and 1-202, (previous foliation 2-16, suggesting that a title-page is missing), bound in half-leather and dark-blue coloured boards with a hollow back and gilt spine with flat dummy bands.
