Working With WarwickADP and The University of Warwick

ADP designed the exciting redevelopment of Butterworth Hall, an important concert facility for The University of Warwick and the Midlands area. The project included the major refurbishment of the 1970s main concert hall as well as a reorganisation and extension of the backstage facilities. Together with the provision of a new full orchestral rehearsal room and new dressing room facilities, Butterworth Hall has been transformed to meet the very highest standards of performing arts facilities.

The new extended facilities were arranged to provide a dramatic new backdrop to the existing entrance and signify the redevelopment of the concert hall, as well as to create a new significant performance space in its own right within the arts complex.

Reviewed by MADE (the Midlands Architecture and the Designed Environment regional review panel), the scheme was praised for “a thoroughness of thought, and the Panel applauds the quality of design and the architecture.”

ADP has been working with The University of Warwick since 2002 and we have completed a wide variety of projects for them to date. Many of these have been refurbishment projects to provide the university with up to date facilities for both staff and students alike.

ADP was also commissioned to design the multi-departmental refurbishment and extension of Millburn House. Completed in five phases, the building houses scientific research as well as academic and performing arts facilities.

The School of Theatre Studies is located with History of Art, and Film and TV Studies. Amongst the facilities are four double height studio and rehearsal room spaces. As a joint venture between The University of Warwick and The Royal Shakespeare Company, the spaces are used both for teaching and learning, as well as for actual performances. The building also houses the Institute of Advanced Study (IAS), which promotes interdepartmental working.

The final phases of the redevelopment provided specific accommodation for Chemistry Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) research adjacent to the large Physics NMR hall. The building comprises a dedicated laboratory and write-up space tailored specifically for research, and an Ion Cyclotron Resonance laboratory. The new extension was designed with a simple material palette to complement the existing building and the Phase 3 extension on the other side of the building.

Millburn House demonstrates an increasing trend amongst HE establishments to look at facilities that encourage interdepartmental working, whilst at the same time building bespoke research and teaching spaces. Our team provided integrated solutions to the challenging requirements of a refurbishment involving both close control laboratories and performance spaces.

We have worked with The University of Warwick on a number of other projects over the last ten years.

Chemistry Teaching Laboratories

In 2002 we worked with the university on a student residential accommodation building for over 700 students, our first project for The University of Warwick, situated on the University Campus, south of the existing Lakeside Residences. Following this we were appointed for the refurbishment of Scarman House conference centre.

More recently we worked on a new three-storey General Purpose Office Building for the university, which has been designed to accommodate a new service base, a café and 2115m2 of commercial office space.

In 2012 the university commissioned us to upgrade the Main Boiler House and refurbish the Council Chamber at Senate House. We also redesigned the main undergraduate teaching laboratory, enhancing space utilisation and modernising the facility.
