Page 1: Adopting new media & empowering journalists€¦ · new and impressive broadcasting technology to the viewers, it also sheds a new light to the broadcaster or journalist, elevating

of information and entertainment to the mix.Production of such a concept now becomes a challenge. LCI must allow its journalists to present, live on the screen, web page or videos while commenting on them. The traditional way of doing things – showing supporting media from the master control room – just won’t do. LCI wants to empower its own journalists and allow them the freedom to facilitate the delivery of their own content by showing live on screen web pages or videos while commenting on them.

SolutionThis requirement by LCI – the ability to have their journalists control content live – is a new one in the industry. It has emerged as a reaction to the propagation of online content that everyone voraciously consumes.Italian media technology provider MediaPower, a veteran too in its own field, has anticipated this need and engineered a system that allows this novel way of broadcasting. MediaPower’s NewsTouch is a touch-based live presentation appliance that allows journalists to deliver dynamic news content: live press clippings, web, video, and other media. It provides and intuitive and easy-to-use interface for journalists and editors to comment, mark, or draw on images, videos, web pages, and social networks that they are reporting live – all through an electronic multi-touch board.

Established in 1994, LCI was the first ever French news channel, a subsidiary of the TF1 Group that also owns the most popular TV channel in France, TF1. But the competition nowadays is not only limited to counterpart news channels. People have been getting their news in online portals and in their own social network feeds. Or simply, people are more interested in entertaining themselves with the Internet and social media. With the amount of information each one of us is getting

from multiple sources, who has the time – or need – to watch the news? This is how LCI exhibits the grace and passion of a veteran news provider. In 2013, LCI launched new morning shows. The launch introduced new people and programs and kept LCI’s roster fresh and exciting to its subscribers. One of the new programs is L’œil du web, or "The Eye of the Web”. The show presents trending information circulating on the web and on the social networks. With this concept, the renders obsolete the need to compete with the internet and social media. Instead, the shows harvest the popularity of the medium and turns it into a must-see TV content.

Business challengesThe idea of taking up online content on TV is genius. People are engaged to convene in another medium to see how LCI and their viewers are reacting to information they themselves have probably seen online. This adds a whole new layer

Integration into the news production spaceLCI has been using NewsTouch to allow its journalists control over what is to be presented during its live news programs. The journalist interacts with the NewsTouch touchscreen – as intuitive to use as a smart phone or tablet via gestures – that is connected to the NewsTouch system as an input/control interface. The system is then connected to one of the studio’s live feeds and to a display in the studio background. As the new master of the program, the journalist (or his assistant) is in charge of downloading, choosing, and preparing clips to be used during the show. The news director simply switches between the live studio camera feed and the NewsTouch output during a program.

A new way of broadcastingIn LCI programs, they sometimes showed the NewsTouch touchscreen from a live camera alongside the NewsTouch output. Another live camera showed the journalist interacting with NewsTouch. While the purpose of the feed is to introduce a new and impressive broadcasting

technology to the viewers, it also sheds a new light to the broadcaster or journalist, elevating their skills and status to the master orchestrator of a live show. The NewsTouch technology also fulfills LCI’s vision of keeping up – and staying ahead – of the times. With its new brand of news programming, online content is never a threat to its news television programming. By incorporating the web and social media to news, LCI’s programs become even more engaging and dynamic to its subscribers.David Fuhrer, Cadre chez LCI, says, “MediaPower’s NewsTouch is a powerful tool, yet it is so easy to use. With it, we delimit the capabilities of the journalist, from someone merely reading text from a prompter to someone who communicates with and engages viewers from all over the world.”LCI is continuously transitioning control of multimedia presentation content from the video technicians to the journalists and news anchors. Apart from L’œil du web, LCI is also using NewsTouch in Le Matinale, or “Morning News”.
