My name is the same as that of the famous knight of Lithuania who built our capital city.

So, I’m trying to be a knight of the computer graphics world.

We’re all just a little bit crazy inside, and I take all my ideas from that little crazy part of

me. Painting and creating is a never-ending way of life for me. I often compare it to play-

ing a video game with an infinite number of levels and possibilities. But instead of vying

for the highest score, I gain satisfaction by my use of color, shapes, and composition. My

imagination inspires me to discover new and exciting ways of expressing the images that

begin like a spark in my mind.

Monster by MoonlightFor better or worse, the werewolf is a popular character in horror. Though frequently

visualized as something very evil, I thought I’d do a different take on this monster and

create something that was a little less horrifying.

1 Sketching the ideaUsing Photoshop, I quickly created a sketch. Com-position and proportion were the least important at this point. Sometimes it helps a lot to completely relax at the initial stage. I had an urgent need to see a lovely wolf in an awkward situation.

2 Brushing in DepthI then created a new layer and, using the Brush tool, I used shading to create a sense of depth as well evoke a sense of night. At this point, I merged those two layers and created a new one on top with the Multiply blending mode.

3 Creating VolumeTo create some volume, I used a standard round Brush tool, with its opacity set to 70%. I worked out the path of the light and darkened where it would naturally be darker. It’s important to be patient at this stage and to just keep working. It’s not a bad idea to duplicate this layer and just hide it, because later on it might save your life.

4 Enhancing with MoonlightA common saying goes, “Where shadows are there is light also.” I’m working with light on another layer, and I painted those areas that should be illuminated by moonlight.

5 Enhancing with MoonlightNow it’s time for some additional details and tex-tures. I created the moon and also included a victim in the hollow of a tree. After a brief play with details, I enhanced whole image using the Dodge and Burn tool to enhance highlights and shadows.

6 adding ColorI then merged all the layers into a single layer and made a copy of it. I edited the top layer with the Curve tool (Ctrl + m) by decreasing the red and blue channels to achieve a bluish-green color. Having two layers allowed me to color trees by erasing some parts of the top layers.


7 adding leavesAfter so much hard work, it was time for dessert. I created a new layer, and with a few small brushes illuminated the forest with direct moonlight. A lack of vegetation forced me to use the Leaves and Veggie Brush Pack by Charfade.

ConclusionIt’s still a mystery to me why that poor fellow in the

tree was wandering in the middle of the forest at night.

Never theless, I believe everything will be just fine.
