Warm, Dry Climate Houses (Adobe)

• Adobe houses have be known to be around since eighth century B.C.

• Common in many places in the world, mostly dry, warm climates.

• Middle East, North Africa, South America, southwestern North America, and in Spain are just some of the places this home type is used.

Materials • ____ ______ ___ ____ __ _ ___________ __ ____ _____ ___ _____• __ ___________ __ ______ ____ _ _____ _____ __ _______ _______ _____ ___ _______ ____ __ • _ __ ____ ____ __ ___ ___ _____ ______ __ ___ ____ __ ______

• Adobe bricks are made of a composition of clay, water, and straw

• The composition is poured into a frame which is removed quickly after the mixture sets in.

• It is then left to dry and later turned on its side to finish.

Stacked Up

• To build the house, the adobe bricks are stacked on each other.

• The roof is made by having wooded beams and screen across them with brick laid on top of that.

The Looks• As you can see in the first picture below, an adobe house

being made.• Notice that its just the bare bricks and has wooden beams on

the doorways and ceiling for support.• The second picture is of a finished house, notice the plaster

that is on top of the bricks and the flat roof.

Why?

• These houses are great for warm, dry climates.• Has great thermal properties which are good

for cold desert nights.• Would this be good in Caldwell County? I

would say no, because we do have a lot of rain, but on the flip side it would be good for summer time.
