ADMINISTRATORS OF VOLUNTEER SERVICES OF CENTRAL NEW YORK

P.O. BOX 529

SYRACUSE, NEW YORK 13201

The Administrators of Volunteer Services of Central New York (AVS/CNY) is a professional association

representing a diverse array of directors and coordinators of volunteer services, from public and private

human services, health and community organizations. AVS/CNY was formed two decades ago to serve

as a resource to members and community organizations. Today AVS/CNY continues to support and

promote the concept of volunteerism while continually elevating and enhancing the profession of

administrators of volunteer services.

As the field of volunteer management continues to grow, we must be responsive to the increased need for

professional development, networking among members and the promotion of volunteerism in Central

New York. AVS/CNY is designed not only to enhance our profession but to nurture ourselves as well.

The key to our success is promoting teamwork, working together to develop a cadre of volunteers for all

agencies through the spirit of camaraderie.

Success in life has nothing to

do with what you gain in life

or accomplish for yourself.

It's what you do for others. -

Danny Thomas

Don't ever question the value of

volunteers. Noah's Ark was built

by volunteers; the Titanic was

built by professionals.

"There are two ways of

spreading light: to be the candle

or the mirror that reflects it."--

History of

Administrators of Volunteer Services of Central New York

Informal meetings began to take place in 1972 when a few people in health related agencies who coordinated volunteer

services felt it was important to discuss ideas, concerns and needs. A workshop was presented jointly with the Volunteer

Center on “Friendly Visitors”.

In 1974 regular meeting times were established and programs planned to develop basic skills and offer tools to persons

coordinating or supervising volunteers. A minimum membership fee of $.50 was required. Membership was opened to

include all individuals who administered or assisted in administering volunteer services in any organization or agency in

Central New York.

The birth of the Administrators of Volunteer Services of Central New York was in 1979. We emerged as a professional

organization with a set of By-Laws. Officers were elected and committees established.

We now have 57 members representing 44 agencies. Our purpose is still today what it was twenty-six years ago: “to support

and promote the concept of volunteerism; to contribute to the principles and practices of sound volunteer administration; to

serve as a support and an educational/training resource to members and community organizations; and to promote the

professional development of volunteer service administrators.”

AVS/CNY celebrated its tenth anniversary in June 1989 with a luncheon and proclamation recognizing volunteerism presented

by Nicholas Pirro, Onondaga County Executive. The highlight of the 1989-1990 year was the formation of the Professional

Development Task Force for the membership to offer professional support and development to each other. In 1994 the third

Wall of Fame in Onondaga County, which was placed in a local mall during National Volunteer Week, and listed 13,000

volunteers from 63 agencies.

Excellence Award

In 1998, the AVS Excellence Award was established to honor a current member of AVS who demonstrates exceptional

performance that supported their agency’s mission statement, innovation with volunteer recruitment, recognition and retention,

and creativity in starting new programs.

It was brought to the Board’s attention in 2007 that there was a need to reexamine the nomination/selection process due to

additional job responsibilities related to and often incorporated to positions in this field.

In 2008, the Board reviewed the award criteria which resulted in not only a new nomination/selection process, but also a new

name, the Sandy Spitler Excellence Award. The award was presented during the 2008 annual AVS Luncheon to Sandy Spitler,

the creator of the Excellence Award and long-time AVS member for her leadership and dedication to AVS and overall

commitment to the field we all share.

The Sandy Spitler Excellence Award is awarded to one member who has attended at least four membership meetings per year

(September – March), regularly participates within the AVS organization and demonstrates an overall commitment to AVS and

their employer. AVS members are nominated individually by Board Members during the month of April. Additional

information may be requested from supervisors to supplement nomination. The recipient is awarded at the AVS Annual

Meeting in June.
