YOUTH VOLUNTEERS

Once again this year we have had a wonderful group of youth volunteers. They help us in so many ways. They transported residents to and from activities visited with them, played Uno, card games, and spent time on the units. The Troy Fair week was

a huge success thanks to our youth volunteers. The Winston Walkway was alive every afternoon with the talk of youth and adults, who were playing games, swinging, and gardening. They bring with them a “youthful spirit’ that takes our residents back in time. A BIG thank you to all who helped make this year’s Youth Volunteer program a success.

If you or someone you know is interested in volunteering, whether a youth or an adult, contact

Edie Smith 297-4111 ext. 3047, Monday Through Friday, 7 AM until 3 PM.

ANNUAL PICNIC

This year’s Annual Picnic was held on August 18, 2011. We were very grateful for a day of beautiful sunshine. In attendance were Handprints and Heartbeats Daycare from Troy, numerous senior centers, our residents and families along with staff. Stitches the Clown along with Mzzz. Maggie, were in attendance making smiles and balloon creations. Pat Kane played beautiful music.

There were many door prize and raffle winners. Wonderful food, many smiles and good times were had by all. We look forward to another successful picnic next year. See you there.

SUMMER OUTINGS

We have been very busy with our outings this summer. We attended the Troy Fair, Tioga Downs Casino, several rides in the country for ice cream and the car show. We also had a garden in the Winston Walkway that we enjoyed with fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce. We had beautiful flowers that were planted and cared for by our residents that filled our walkway with beautiful color and fragrances. We will be sad to see summer leave us and will welcome it with open arms next year.

RESIDENT SHOPPING DAYAs we cannot take all the residents to shop for their Christmas wish lists. This year’s resident shopping day is scheduled for November 28, 2011 in the activities room. We will have a large assortment of gifts, Christmas goodies, and unique hand crafted items. Anyone wishing to volunteer to help the residents shop, or wrap their gifts for them please contact Edie Smith 297-4111 ext. 3047. Refreshments will be served.

QUILTINGCongratulations are in order for the Resident Quilting Club. The residents submitted their quilt to the Troy Fair, receiving a blue ribbon for a Hand Quilted Quilt Made by a Group. The prize winning quilt has already been sold! Quilts made by the residents at the weekly quilting club are for sale. If interested in purchasing, contact any staff member in activities. A special thank you to Dottie, Sally and Ethel who volunteer their services each week during quilting club.

FUND RAISING EVENTSThe staff and residents are busy with their efforts to conduct fund raising for many local causes in the community.

The Peer group will be sponsoring a local family in need for the Christmas holiday. The group is collecting funds to finance this effort by selling Halloween ghosts. Participants can purchase ghosts for a small donation, sign their name to it, and they are displayed on the wall for Halloween decorations. They will also be holding a raffle for various items including a ham. If you would like to purchase a ghost, or a raffle ticket see any PEER member, Activities staff member, or the receptionist. During the month of November they will be conducting their annual food drive. Boxes will be conveniently located throughout the building for those who would like to donate any non-perishable food item. The collected items will be donated to a local food pantry prior to Thanksgiving.

The Activities department will be conducting a Christmas Quilt raffle, to benefit The Resident aide and Entertainment fund. The quilts will be Christmas themed and were made by the Manor quilting club and volunteers. Tickets may be purchased from any Activities staff person or receptionist when entering the building. The drawing will be held on December 1, 2011.

CARBOHYDRATE CONSISTENT DIET

You may be noticing some changes in our diabetic menu. We are pleased to announce that we are introducing a carbohydrate consistent menu.

This menu is based in recommendations from the American Diabetes Association and will help control optimal blood sugar.

Experience has showed that residents eat better when they are given less restrictive diets with regular foods.

Our Very Own Hero

During the recent devastation and flooding throughout our community we have all heard many stories of selfless giving, acts of bravery and courageous tales. We here at The Bradford County Manor would like to take this opportunity to honor one of our own. Mr. Paul Pasko is our hero. He, without regard for his own safety was there for his fellow coworker who had the misfortune of being swept away in his vehicle in raging floodwater. Mr. Pasko waded through 5-foot deep

water, when it became apparent that the coworker could not swim. Mr. Pasko along with emergency responders, were able to secure a harness to the man and return him to safety. Without this very brave man and his quick actions this tale would have had a very different ending. Our hats are off to you Mr. Paul Pasko, you are truly an asset to our team and we appreciate your hard work and dedication to making Bradford County Manor a better place.

FLOODING

We are all very much aware of the recent devastation caused to our community related to Tropical Storm Lee. We here at the Bradford County Manor have also endured our share of devastation. As the waters from the nearby creek threatened our facility quick action was taken to evacuate our residents to higher floors. As many are aware our Memory Lane unit is located on the first floor of our facility where thirty-two residents reside. Dedicated staff assisted these residents, their beds and personal belongings to temporary lodging, prior to the loss of our elevators. These evacuations took place at three in the morning. At approximately five thirty waters entered our building causing destruction to the entire first floor which houses many offices, our rehabilitation center, dietary department, laundry services, training room and many supply rooms. As the night continued it was apparent to the working staff that it would be some time before reinforcements could reach them, as all roads leading to our facility were closed and not passable. These staff people should take a bow; our RN Supervisor Katey Wilson and Maintenance Supervisor John Hurlburt supervised them. The operations of our facility continued without missing a beat. Many of our staff made heroic attempts to reach our facility to no avail many endangering their own lives to reach our Residents. As waters began to recede in the early morning hours, dedicated staffers began to arrive, some in very unique manners. All involved are our hero’s; we have learned that we have great staff whose combined efforts are turning our facility around quickly. Our dedicated staff should be very proud, as we are proud of each of them. Since this horrific night we have diligently continued to prevail. Our Memory Lane Unit has been restored with dry wall; new furniture and all residents have been relocated back to their home on Memory Lane. Our Dietary Department is up and running continuing to serve delicious hot meals to our Residents, elevators are repaired, our rehabilitation center is in full swing, and we now are proud owners of approximately twenty hair dryers which were

purchased to hand dry many of our medical records. We can not possibly list every person involved in our efforts, however a special thank you goes out to our Environmental staff who have spent many hours cleaning and re-cleaning offices and even vehicles damaged by flood waters. We have a top-notch crew here at The Bradford County Manor and I for one am very pleased to be a part of such a dynamic team. Everyone did a great job! We will continue to administer professional care to our residents while restoring our building to its previous condition knowing that we will overcome this disaster and be even stronger in it’s aftermath.
