Looking Back…

Xinghua Primary School celebrated International Friendship Day (IFD) on the 9th of April

2018. The theme for this year’s celebration was ‘Celebrating the ASEAN Community’.

In conjunction with the theme, the school prepared a series of programmes to

commemorate this special day. During the assembly programme, pupils learnt the

importance of IFD and the purpose of ASEAN in terms of its role and responsibilities.

Pupils were taught to value the relationships among the countries in ASEAN and deepen

their understanding of the uniqueness of each of the countries in ASEAN. Flags of the

10 nations in ASEAN were hung in school for the day. Lessons were conducted during

Social Studies periods to enhance the understanding of the ASEAN community.

The highlights of the day were the recess activities for our pupils to take part in quizzes

and play some of the traditional games of some of the ASEAN countries. While having

an enjoyable time bonding with their friends through the games, pupils also earned

points for their Houses. The school is appreciative of the help provided by the PSG

members in conducting the planned activities for our students during recess.

“I was excited on IFD because I could wear my national costume from Myanmar and play games with my friends and get to understand more about our neighbouring countries in ASEAN. Sussana Wynn (4R3)

The Primary Four students embarked on a Literature Programme in Term one this

year. Literature supports and enhances students’ language and literacy learning

experiences in rich and engaging ways. Through the literary skills of reading and

responding to texts, students can make meaningful connections between lessons

learnt in texts and the real world.

In their English lessons, students worked on the book ‘Charlotte’s Web’, a children’s

novel by American author E.B. White. The novel tells of a touching story of a

livestock pig named Wilbur and his friendship with a barn spider, Charlotte. Through

their journey taken through the characters’ perspectives, students learnt to identify

with different points of view and examine thought and action compassionately.

Students also learnt the different elements of fiction writing and will be better able to

make inferences in reading comprehension.

I love reading Charlotte’s Web because I can learn

how to be a wiser person. Charlotte is so wise and

capable. - Janani 4R1
