In the Spring of 1991 our club was founded by 12 enthusiasts lookingfor a way to pool their parts and resources to maintain their vintage Volkswagen Cars. Now we are in our 29th year with about 200 members and the premiere Vintage Volkswa-gen club for Central Ohio. We Strive to share knowledge and resources while having plenty of fun. We welcome everyone interested in classic air-cooled as well as newer water-cooled VW products. Annually we host Ohio’s largest Volkswagen Car show & swap-meet ‘Volksfest’ to benefit Childhood Cancer Family Conection; an independent non-profit organization, devoted to the needs of children with cancer.

ThoughTs from a Board memBer.... Stark Hughes As I set here writing this article looking out the window there’s traces of snow blowing around. I thought the first day of spring was a few days ago. Where is spring? I’m assuming cabin fever is at epidemic levels for all of us wanting to get our vintage VW’s out on the road. I know those days will be here soon but my patience is wearing thin. It’s been 29 years since a small group of us got together at the Black Forest Inn and came up with the idea to start a Vintage VW Club in Columbus. Not in my wildest dreams would I ever imagined I would be writing a newsletter for the club 29 years later. To add to that there was no public internet or social media back then. As I look at our most professionally done newsletter (and in color), state of the art website and Facebook social media we have changed along with the times and thrived. I’m convinced we would not be where we are without the dedicate club members who have stepped up and done a fantastic job. So many other Vintage VW clubs in Ohio that were around then are gone. I think back at all our meeting places over the years, and a lot of those places are out of business, torn down, burned down, etc.… There was a time if the COVVC was meeting at your establishment your days were numbered. Speaking of meeting places our new meeting place, Aero Squadron 94 might be our best yet (Thanks Richard Rambo & Kathy Kern). We have our own private room, it’s quiet, easy to get to, plenty of parking, a good beer selection, and they seem to really like us. What else could we want? Hopefully this month we will have a great turnout for the April meeting. Come out and check the new place out. Also remember the April meeting is the T-Shirt voting meeting. If anyone feel creative submit your entry for the club to vote on. There are a lot of ideas and suggestions being mentioned for things to do this summer. One in particular is a tour of the Airstream Factory sometime this summer. It’s an Ohio business with a long history of classic iconic campers. Sure would be nice to get a caravan of vintage VW’s on a cruise for a tour of the factory. There have been several other great ideas for summer cruises to fun and interesting places. If anyone has an idea or suggestion please let us know. As for any organization that has the longevity we’ve had unfortunately have had to say goodbye to some of our most dedicated members. Most recently Marilyn Allen. We all will remember her as such a gentle soul and passionate VW enthusiast. She, along with the others who have passed on did a great job leaving us with wonderful memories and they celebrated life to the fullest. It’s been an honor and great pleasure knowing them all. Looking forward to the April meeting to celebrate the COVVC’s 29th birthday. If anyone has any relics, pictures or memorabilia from our past history please feel free to bring it. See everyone in April.

With summer being the driving season we are requesting ideas to have meetings at different locations around town. This is the 29th year for Volksfest. A lot has changed since the early years of the show. After doing this for 28 years we actually seem to know what we are doing and (in my humble opinion) organize the premier vintage VW show in the Midwest. We obviously have been doing something right. I’m already getting inquiries about this year’s show via our outstanding new & revised website. As always Mother Nature has the final say. If she’s in a good mood this year she will bless us with the same weather we had last year. This time last year there was a lot of talk on what direction the club should go. We had numerous discussions on what changes we should try. There were many devoted club members who had done an outstanding job holding offices, being on show committees, making contacts, handling membership duties, being the website webmaster, etc… for years. It was time for these devoted volunteers to enjoy a well-deserved retirement. We were so fortunate to have great volunteers in the past and new volunteers step up and carry on. Thank you everyone! The April meeting has become the anniversary meeting. I’m going to bring some vintage material from years past. Anyone else who has any COVVC memobrilia please feel free to bring it to the meeting. I’m sure it will be interesting to see where we’ve been. Looking forward to seeing a lot of people and getting together for Aprils monthly meeting back at the new location of, the 94th Aero Squadron. Get all you vintage VW’s out of hibernation and drive them to the meeting. See you Thursday, April 12th, Stark

ASK AROUND! We need your help! Please check with your local Auto Parts stores if they’d be willing to donate items to be used for doorprize give-aways at Volksfest and club meetings. Thank you!

Oldsmobile was the make of the family car for Brenda while growing up. For Jim, it was Pontiac. How did we get from these now orphan cars to VW? For Brenda, 1968 was the year of purchase for her own family car and economics was the top priority. So, that was the year for her first VW, a blue fastback. This car was sold after about 6 years of daily use and a 912 Porsche took its place. And, that’s how we met at a Porsche club dinner meeting. When Brenda mentioned to a few Porsche friends that she was going on a date with Jim, there was a lot of speculation about in which exotic car he would pick her up. It turned out to be a 1967 square back VW!! After we married, we had many VW family cars but the best one (in Brenda’s opinion) was a white Rabbit, with red interior, sun roof, and diesel engine. The rest of our family couldn’t wait to get rid of it - too noisy,

smelled bad, didn’t start when it was really cold causing us to miss at least one family holiday dinner, etc.

Jim’s first VW was a beautiful black with red interior 1960 Karmann Ghia he bought when it was a year old. He had if for a year and then sold it. As part payment for the Karmann Ghia, he acquired his first Beetle, a tired 1957 sedan he immediately sold. His next VW was a ‘59 Beetle he bought when going to college in northern California. He bought it for the winter rainy season, as he was tired of water leaking into his Porsche Speedster (which had side curtains). During the four or five months he had the Beetle, it soon became highly modified with many Porsche components. When the rains were over, he took off all the performance equipment and sold it. His favorite VW’s were a series of three Vanagon campers he drove over a period of 20 years as his daily drivers. The last Vanagons were sold in the U.S. in 1991, and Jim sold his last one (a 1991 model) when it was almost ten years old and had a lot of miles on it. He has come almost full circle, as he and Brenda now own an original-paint 1957 Beetle. The first time they showed it at a small VW car show, it won best of show. The second time they showed it, the lead judge suggested they consider repainting it, pointing out that the decent-but-not-perfect black original paint was now over 50 years old! We decided we didn’t care to destroy the originality of the car (and part of the value!), and so it retains its original paint. We joined COVVC very soon after the club was started and really enjoy interacting with the club members and love the VWs more than ever. We nominate Bill Simon to write this column next month.

VW TeCh... Tips, Tricks, Tools & Repairs Bruce AmackerAdjusting the Link Pins on Early King Pin Front Ends

This applies to Busses through ’67 and Type 1s through ’65. A frequently overlooked item in the front end of these early kingpin setups is the adjustment of the link pins. According to the VW owner’s manuals, a Type 1 should have them checked and adjusted every 3000 miles, and a Type 2 should have them adjusted every 6000 miles to accommodate wear. I’ve frequently seen where a previous owner/mechanic has assembled the front end and either not adjusted the pins at all or turned them the wrong direction. Recently I saw one where three of the pins were adjusted perfectly and the fourth was adjusted completely in the wrong direction giving way too much play, making me think the technician was dyslexic! The pins have a unique design feature- a slanted groove cut into them with a clamp bolt that holds the whole spindle assembly onto the trailing arm. This slanted clamp bolt has a double duty of acting as an adjustment for link pin end play. If the end play is excessive from improper adjustment, not only is camber of the front tire incorrect, but also excessive play in the front end can cause poor handling as the spindle is not held firmly to the trailing arm. There are two of these per side, and all you’ll see from under the car is the tip of the pin where the flats are. The “Cliff Notes” version of adjustment is to loosen the adjacent lock bolt and rotate the pin to take the slack out. I usually loosen the lock bolt, tap the end of the link pin with a hammer, put an open end wrench on the flats on the end of the pin, and then rotate the pin to verify it’s free and make sure I’m going the correct direction. Once the play is removed, rotate the pin in the opposite direction a few degrees and again tap with a hammer. This loosens the pin a bit so it’s not bound up. Although there’s no end play spec the service manual states it should not be bound under tension. I think if there’s around .010” end play in the pin that should be good for free movement but not enough to change the camber drastically. If you still have a camber problem after adjusting the pins you likely have a bent training arm or spindle. In this situation you’d remove both angled lock bolts, pull the entire spindle assembly off the trailing arms, and measure the offset between the ends of the trailing arms. If it’s not within the spec in the service manual you probably have a bent trailing arm.Spring is here, get that car out and put some miles on it!

Remember to Bring your

T-Shirt Design Ideas for

Volksfest 29!The specs for the Volksfest shirt/logo are as follows: 1) Design should not exceed 13x15”. 2) Max of three colors, but we also talked about a single color design too? 3) Must include Volksfest 29, Club logo/name, the date August 10th, 2019 & Watkins Memorial H.S.
