An evening in Rose GardenRavjot Singh LM - 991

The Last Ride : Before Last RiteCol. Balwant Singh LM 47, M. : 9417213557

Stats put out by UNO & other research bureaus, pronounce the highest rate of road accidents in India, resulting in deaths, maiming or disabilities for life. Pages full daily news : Buses, cars, trucks & two-wheelrs, down the gorges, rivers & canals. Drunk & careless rash driving & head-on collisions aglore : "Two hoots" to the rules. Framed departed ones adorn home walls. "Left-behind" grieve till eternity.Plethora of laws, rules & regulations. The sign boards/ symbols at every nook & corner of roads & rail crossings. Even one-liner "Limericks" like "While negotiating a curve do not appreciate co-driver's curve "or "reach home : not a hospital bed, so on." While travailing by road, you will observe, drivers have a scant regard for the lights, zebra crossings, wearing of belts/ helmets (even religious taboo on wearing helmets). I can safely surmise that our state Govt. can earn millions by fining the violators. NRI's & foreign returnees, sing "Paeans" of road discipline in foreign lands. They are aghast & helpless "Within". One friend quoted thus An Indian was booked by a cop in USA. The driver pleaded all sorts of "high & low excuses" as per "Indian Std Procedure". The cop did not budge. Gave in to pleadings, opened his purse, took out the fine amount, gave it to "the driver" and asked to pay him back as the fine amount. But for us, it is "laughing Point." Our human & vehicular population is exploding. Hardly any dent in us to follow the rules. Lax & "Chalta-hai" attitude of enforcers. Stats figures would be frightening in future. Pilling up of court cases. Senior Citizens friends ! we should also make serious efforts, not only in cosy drawing room "chit-chats", but also include some thoughts one stage and multi-fora debates/ discussions, on such burning issues, though the "Topic-of-the-Day" may be different.
