ABSTRACT:

Beauty is that quality or combination of qualities which gives keen contentment to the senses especially that of

sight & which charms the mind also. The concept of beauty has an old origin & it is as old as mankind &

civilization. One of the ways of expression of beauty is through the appearance of complexion of the skin.

Ayurveda refers it as a’ Varna’. Herbal extracts are primarily added to cosmetic preparations due to several

associated properties such as antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties.

Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is one of the potent herbs used worldwide in cosmetics. The present study was

conducted to prepare Yashtimadhu taila lotion and its physico – chemical analysis because the lotion as topical

suspensions, solutions and emulsions are usually serve as vehicles for topically applied drugs, as emollients, or

as protective or occlusive dressings, or they may be applied to the skin and membranes. pH of this oil in water

phase lotion was around 5 which is suitable for human skin also the other parameters were tested showed

satisfactory results in terms of physico – chemical analysis.

KEY WORDS: Yashtimadhu taila lotion, Varnya, Cosmetics.

INTRODUCTION:

Research Article

The importance of beauty is increasing now a day. Due

to competition in daily life demand of beautification

and its related therapies and products are increasing.

Herbal formulations are considered as safe, potent and

more effective with fewer side effects than chemically

derived formulations. Ayurveda described many

herbal, herbo – mineral formulations for beautification

in a form of many Taila, Ghruta, Lepa, Churna etc.

Although the demand of beauty products is increasing

on other side the problems related to skin which are

de – beautifying the skin due to pollutions, modified

lifestyles, improper food habits and increased uses of

chemically derived products on skin are also

increasing.

Ayurveda has described many Kshudra rogas in

ancient texts; which affects the skin. It can be

developed in both the gender but women are more

tend to this due to hormonal imbalance, changes

occurring in them during their pregnancies, use of

cosmetics for local applications and oral supplements

etc.

In the context of de – beautifying skin, use of

Yashtimadhu taila has been suggested by our ancient

texts. It has amazing results on the skin. It provides

lustrous, blazing and glorifying skin. But application of

oil on a face or a body on a daily basis is inconvenient

and quite difficult. Hence present study was conducted

to develop Yashtimadhu taila lotion as per the

reference given in the Bharat Bhaishjaya Ratnakar [1].

Aim:

Pharmaceutical development & standardization of

Yashtimadhu taila lotion.

DISCUSSION :

Reports of pH, physical appearance, refractive index,

loss on drying and skin irritation test are given in

above tables. Human skin is fairly acidic. The optimal

pH of human skin ranges between 5 to 6. The

formulated Yashtimadhu Taila and Yashtimadhu taila

lotion has pH of 5 which is acidic and suitable for

human skin. All the ingredients used for this

formulation are of Varnyakara [5]. They all are

Madhura rasatmaka, Sheeta Viryatmaka and having

Madhura Vipaka. Yashtimadhu and Neel kamla both

are having Varnyakara, Daha prashamanakara,

Lekhaniya properties which are important factors for

enhancing complexion and providing glorious beauty

or clear skin.

Yasthimadhu Taila lotion both was found to be

homogeneous, smooth, and consistent with no

aggregates or sediments with skin compatible and no

irritation found on application [6].

For the preparation of Yashtimadhu Taila lotion we

have used Sariva Phanta instead of distilled water on

trial and error basis, because Sariva itself possesses

Varnyakara, Daha prashamanakara properties.

LOTION

CONCLUSION :

In the present study, the lotion was formulated

successfully. This may be called as oil in water phase

lotion. The topical application of this Yashtimadhu

Taila lotion may have minimum side effects as

compared to allopathic drugs which are needed to be

established. From the above study it was observed

that vitiated Vata and Pitta are majorly responsible

for de – beautification of the skin [7].

So these drugs with Varnya properties are converted

into new dosage form i.e., lotion form for better

application as compared to oil, providing more

stability, convenience and shelf life. However an

elaborate protocol for the pre-clinical and clinical

trials is needed to be designed and implemented to

check the activity on human volunteers and/or

through in-vitro study [8].
