Swami Chinmayananda, disciple of Swami Tapovanam of Uttarkashi and a world-renowned teacher of Advaita-vedānta, seeing the widespread spiritual and social degradation in India, decided to come down from the Himalayas and plant the knowledge of Advaita among the people in cities and towns, for it was Advaita that had brought him fulfilment. To disseminate this knowledge, he conducted 'Jñāna-yajñas' – a series of discourses on the sacred texts. He spread the sublime teachings, bringing a range of texts to the common people – the Upaniṣads, the Bhagavad-gītā and many others, drawing from the knowledge tradition to which Advaita belongs. The first such Yajña was held in December 1951, at a small temple in Pune, Maharashtra. Swamiji's teachings were based on the authority of the Vedas and his direct experience. But he delivered the teachings in English – a near taboo for those times – packaged in wit and a magnetic oratorical style. People flocked to his Yagñas. Over the next 42 years, Swamiji conducted 576 such Jñana-yajñas and innumerable spiritual camps, reaching millions of people the world over, and authored 97 books. The Bhagavad-gītā was the root of his Yajñas, from which grew all other camps and lectures. His text in English on the Bhagavad-gītā, called the The Holy Gita, created a revolution of sorts worldwide, and is spoken of as one of history's best translations and commentaries. About CIF

Chinmaya International Foundation (CIF), the Academia of Sanskrit

Research and Indic Studies, is the research wing of Chinmaya Mission

worldwide. Established in the year 1989, CIF is housed in Adi Sankara

Nilayam, the hallowed maternal and birth home of the great saint and

philosopher Ādi Śaṅkarācārya.

CIF stands on a 10-acre plot amidst sun-blessed greenery, vibrant

temple shrines and calm lotus ponds. Amidst this serene

atmosphere, there is a beehive of activities devoted to the study,

research, conservation, publishing and promotion of Sanskrit and

Ancient Indian Philosophy.

Hastāmalaka Stotram

Hastāmalaka, as a kid, was totally unconcerned with all worldly

activities. This led his parents to think that he was a lazy kid. The

‘Restfulness’ of a Jñānī was mistaken for laziness, and they took him

to Ādi Śaṅkarācārya. Hastāmalaka fell at the Master's feet in a

sāṣṭaṅga praņām with deep emotions.

Ādi Śaṅkarācārya asked five questions to a thirteen year old boy. In

reply to his Guru's questions, Hastāmalaka sang out the famous

Hastāmalaka Stotram. Later Ādi Śaṅkarācārya wrote a commentary

on Hastāmalaka Stotram too.

In this text, the Master unfolds the subtle Truth that indicates that the

Jīva, Jagat and Īśvara are none other than one's own Self

Śiṣya-anuśānamTaittirīya Upaniṣad contains a section dealing with what a student

should do after he completes formal education called Śiṣya-

anuśānam (rules for a student), this section consists of timeless

wisdom which the Ŗṣis had derived from their experience and a

wholesome understanding of life. These rules for student hold good

even now, despite changed circumstances and a different system of

education.

Swami AdvayanandaInitiated into Brahmacharya Dīkṣā by Pujya Gurudev Swami

Chinmayananda, Swamiji served at Mission Centres at Kodaikanal,

Trichy and Chinmaya International Residential School, Coimbatore.

Swamiji was initiated into the holy order of sannyāsa by Pujya Guruji

Swami Tejomayananda and since then has been Acharya of Chinmaya

International Foundation.

An accomplished teacher of Vedānta, Swamiji has authored several

books and courses at CIF. Swami Advayananda researched and

coordinated the Upanishad Ganga teleserial produced by Chinmaya

Creations that was broadcast by Doordarshan. He served as Ācārya of

two Vedānta Courses – the first in Tamil at Sandeepany Vidyamandir,

Coimbatore, and the second in English at Sandeepany Sadhanalaya,

Mumbai.

Swami Sharadananda SarasvatiSwami Sharadananda completed his Vedānta Course under Swami

Iswarananda at Sandeepany Sadhanalaya, Mumbai in 2002. Swamiji

has studied various Indian spiritual disciplines including Vedānta and

Yoga from different āśramas and institutions such as Sivananda

Ashram, Rishikesh; Bihar School of Yoga, Munger, etc. A post graduate

in Advaita Vedānta, Swamiji ranked first at the All-India level and was

awarded a gold medal from the prestigious Sanskrit University,

Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, New Delhi.

Swamiji's Sanskrit knowledge came to the forefront when he assisted

Pujya Guruji Swami Tejomayananda as the Sanskrit Ācārya in the 13th

Vedanta Course Batch at Sandeepany Sadhanalaya. Swamiji's stint as

the Ācārya for the Purohit Course at Chinmaya Gardens, Coimbatore,

earned him respect as one who has both the ritualistic and Vedānta

knowledge of the scriptures. This eloquent, erudite and versatile

Ācārya mesmerizes participants as he quotes authoritatively from the

scriptures and Śāstras, Srīmad-Bhāgvatam and Vedānta. Swamiji

received sannyāsa-dīkṣā from Pujya Guruji Swami Tejomayananda on

Śivarātrī, 2014.
