    Book 4 Introduction

These summaries are computer-generated representations of each season from 1850 to 1900. They include seasonal dates, the name of the theatre (as it appears on the bills), doors, curtain and half-price times (until abolished in 1858), and ticket prices (in guineas, pounds, shillings and pence).

These are followed by the dates of the season. Sometimes editors had to choose them because performances were continuous—without any seasonal break. Next comes a series of totals: performances (matinee and evening), benefits (with recipients and dates), number of dark nights, Lenten productions and their performers, and other relevant matters such as productions at the Adelphi by a visiting company, educational lectures, juvenile nights, charity performances, etc.

The theatre's management and its functionaries appear in hierarchical order; most of these names are found on the playbills, but a few have been discovered in other sources.

The author catalog lists all those given credit for the creation of a piece. The entries, in alphabetical order, are followed by titles and dates of first performance that season. (They may have been performed before, of course.) After authors, come listings of musical composers, arrangers, choreographers and their pieces.

There are two main indexes in seasonal summaries. The first is of summary cast lists. Alphabetized by titles, the listing begins with the genre, number of acts, names of authors, composers, arrangers and number of performances, followed by a window date of first and last performance. Should a piece be performed for the first time at the theatre, the title will be preceded by an asterisk. The summary cast is arranged by role as it appears on the bill. The actor who played the role is given in bold text followed by frequency and a window date—first and last performance. If a role was played by more than one performer, the same information is given for each.

For those interested in deducing changing tastes in dramatic fare, a catalog of genres is provided. The move away from burletta toward "drama" is clearly demonstrated during the century.

The second major index of actors and actresses—they are printed separately for convenience. Each performer is listed with all the roles in which he or she appeared, the number of times, followed by the title in bold text. A special "window date" displays the first and last dates of performance. It is quite usual for major actors to perform over a dozen roles per season. In 1850-1851, for example, Paul Bedford and William Cullenford appeared in eighteen roles apiece, and ninety-one performers acted that season—though, admittedly, some had minor parts.

After the actors and actresses comes the list of singers, dancers, entertainers and spectacle performers.

The seasonal summary ends with five chronological records—though not all are found in every season. The first is of music, composers and musicians. Often the type of music—overture, cornet solos, etc. is given with titles, source, composer and the performer. The date is always supplied. The same principal is employed for listings of songs, composers, singers, dancers, choreographers and, infrequently, spectacle performers. Occasionally information of significance appears at the end of the seasonal summary under the heading "other production credits."
