John Hullet & Electric Light at Pt Augusta The article below that recently appeared in the Adelaide Advertiser sparked the interest of Acting Museum Manager Roger Williams:- https://www.adelaidenow.com.au/messenger

“Port Augusta leaders in electricity, even back in the 1800s Port Augusta has been found to be the location of South Australia’s first electrically lit home. Two historians found the information when compiling the history of a former local figure.

Daniel Stringer, The Upper Spencer Gulf News February 25, 2020 7:33pm THE history of electricity in Port Augusta has been unearthed, with the town revealed to have been leading the state for almost 200 years when it comes to power. Port Augusta historians Paul Smith and Cynthia Collins have spent the past six months delving into the life and influence of John Hullett. Mr Hullett was a significant figure in Port Augusta during the 1880s and while he only lived in the town for 10 years, he made several key contributions. The biggest occurred in October 1885, when he used a hydraulic engine to light his house with electricity, becoming the first residence in SA to use electricity for lighting.”

The photo above and the plaque show the room lit by electricity at Port Augusta.

Roger Williams was aware that they were already in the Museum.

Mr J W H Hullet played a very significant role in the

promotion of Science and the introduction of Electric

Power in early South Australia. (See information from

the State Library & the Advertiser )

We are pleased to report that on Tuesday 3rd March 2020 a new, commemorative sign was erected on the Pavilion at the Sir Thomas Playford ETSA Museum.

This sign celebrates the significant input into the establishment & management of the Museum by the late Max Steen during his term as Museum Manger.

Max tragically lost his life on 10th November 2019 resulting from a horrific accident at the intersection of the Copper Coast Highway and Augusta Highway near Port Wakefield

The Corona Virus (COVID-19) Some very useful information is available at the following website: https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/advice-for-public

With the likely impact of COVID-19 getting an annual flu-shot is very important.

See the information below from the Australian Department of Health

Annual vaccination is the most important measure to prevent influenza and its complications. It is recommended for all people aged 6 months and over (unless contraindicated). To meet the anticipated demand for seasonal influenza vaccines in 2020, the Aus-

tralian Government will be securing the largest ever supply of seasonal influenza vaccines. These are

provided through the National Immunisation Program (NIP) for people most at risk. NIP vaccines will be

available in April, subject to local supply arrangements.
