TA to target youth market TOURISM Australia todayconfirmed details of its biggestever global youth campaign, withmd Andrew McEvoy saying thepush would include heavypromotion of the WorkingHoliday Maker Visa Program. Speaking at TA’s third annualAustralian Tourism DirectionsConference in Canberra, McEvoysaid that the visa scheme was an“excellent platform” to attractyoung people, who contributemore than a quarter of Australia’sinternational visitor arrivals. The TA conference follows TTFAustralia’s Leadership Summityesterday, where foreign ministerBob Carr also hinted at a

significant expansion of theworking holidaymaker program toinclude more Asian countries. Although daily spending byyounger visitors is lower thanother segments, workingholidaymakers have anexceptional length of stay andalso help fill vacancies in somesectors of the tourism market. Also at the conference, TAunveiled the findings of asignificant research project intothe triggers for visitation toAustralia. Undertaken in 11 keyinternational markets, thefindings identify “opportunities tomake the most of Australia’stourism offering” includingfocusing on coastal, aquatic andwildlife experiences. Interestingly, food and winewere also identified as strongdrivers, with TA to fine-tune itsapproach in some markets basedon the study.

MANTRA Kent Street, welcomingguests for short or longer stays, has seen its fair share of quirkycustomers who choose to maketheir “home away from home” alittle more like an actual home. General manager DanielRussell yesterday told TD headmires the quirks some of hisguests bring to their apartments. One in particular, in town for ayear due to involvement with astageshow production, whodecided to have a fun littlecamping trip...inside the room. Housekeeping notified him ofa rather strange object set up inthe room, that being a tent. The customer was not causingany damage, so Daniel shruggedit off with a laugh.

Mixed feedback on reforms THE Ministerial Council onConsumer Affairs has made publicsubmissions to its consultation onthe proposed Travel IndustryTransition Plan, and they reveal awide disparity about the way theproposals are to be implemented. Key players including CarnivalAustralia and the TravelManagersgroup have raised several issues, going beyond the TITP proposalsto question the wind-up of theTCF and agent licensing andinstead rely on the genericprovisions of the AustralianConsumer Law which covers allbusinesses across the country. The Carnival Australiasubmission raises the prospect ofthe cruise giant deciding to moveaway from travel agentdistribution, revealing that in2011 it recorded 190,000bookings with more than 81% ofthose via licensed travel agencies. Carnival says that in theabsence of the TCF “there will besignificant pressure on theoperator to honour the booking”in the case of an agent collapse. “This will inevitably meanoperators such as us will need to

reassess the ways in which weuse agents as a distributionchannel,” Carnival warned, addingthat it may also be forced to treatsmaller agents differently due tothe changed risk profile. Barry Mayo from TravelManagersparent House of Travel also raiseda number of concerns, includingthat “the removal of regulatoryand financial oversight may resultin consumers only wishing to dealwith the very large participants inthe travel intermediary market, thus ultimately resulting in lesscompetition and less choice forthe consumer”. House of Travel backed a moreuniform national approach toregulatory supervision of theindustry, reiterating previouslystated concerns about a lack ofsuitable alternative insuranceoptions and lower barriers toentry, saying that prudentialoversight should be retained butthe payment of consumercompensation claims by the TCFcould be eliminated. A submission by consumergroup CHOICE says it does notbelieve that private insurance andcredit card chargebacks willaddress the problem of consumerloss due to agent insolvency. However, CHOICE urged anaccreditation scheme coupledwith an industry ombudsman, suggesting that if the TCF iswound up, a third of its $32m inreserves be allocated “to fund aconsumer organisation to ensureconsumers are appropriatelyrepresented, assisted andinformed in the newarrangements.” The submissions are online atwww.consumerlaw.gov.au.

QF LHR bag drop QANTAS has announced theinternational expansion of its‘Faster, Smarter Check-In’ system, with the introduction of the veryfirst automated self-service bagdrop at London Heathrow. Two self-service bag drop unitshave been installed for use byboth Qantas and British Airwayscustomers from today, at the QFEconomy check-in area (Zone F). All Australian, NZ and Britishpassport holders travelling toAustralia as their final destinationand who have not checked inonline can use the system.

767 upgrades sooner THE refurbishment of 16 Boeing767 aircraft by Qantas has beenfast tracked, with the first of theupgraded planes flying today. The last 767 refresh is targetedfor completion by the end of Mar2013, finishing the project sixmonths earlier than planned. Enhancements will see the 767sequipped with in-flightentertainment streamed direct toiPads in every seat, as well asupdated cabin interiors, with QFdomestic ceo Lyell Strambi sayingthe 767s “look and feel like new”.

AFTA UPDATEThe latest insights from AFTA’s

Chief Executive, Jayson Westbury

SUPERSTORM Sandy has clearly rocked the USA and no doubt many ofus in the travel industry. From the pictures and reports we are seeing it isanother nasty blow to a country that Australia and more over, Australiantravellers have fallen in love with. The USA has been and I am sure willcontinue to be a very strong destination for the outbound travel industryand due to this, the numbers of Australians that have and will beimpacted by this superstorm is bound to be big. Travel Agents across Australia will no doubt jump into action to supportclients at this time. All the airlines operating to the US out of Australiahave immediately done the right thing to help make this process as easyand simple as it can be. Albeit that these things are never easy. Weather events and the travel industry are definitely not a marriageand I am sure everyone hopes that as the superstorm passes and settles, the tragedy unfold can be kept to a minimum. As for what it will all looklike once the water subsides and the people return, we will just have towait and see. New York is a tough city and if there is a city in the worldthat knows how to recover from adversity, it is NYC. I am sure everyone’smind and hearts are with the USA at this time & hope that this situationcan recover quickly. On a more positive note, I had the pleasure of being a guest in Vietnamthis past weekend as I attended the Harvey World Travel Symposium. HWT did a wonderful thing in making some significant donations tosome special charities that operate in Vietnam and Cambodia. It isamazing how far a little can go in a country that has suffered somuch. It makes you feel good to be a part of an industry thatcan give back in the way that the owners/manager andindeed the company did during the symposium. Welldone to everyone involved in what was an excellentconference with a wonderful local experience for all.
