Today’s workers are more complex than ever. Their lives and their jobs are shaped by a recovering economy, social media and interactions with colleagues from diverse generations — among other influences. And, as U.S. unemployment declines and candidates and employers find newer and faster ways to connect, the competition for top talent is intensifying.

In this environment, you need more than an understanding of salary figures to attract and retain the right people — you need to know what makes each employee unique and what they are looking for in their careers. You need to take a multidimensional approach.

Our 2015 Salary Guide provides an in-depth look at the salaries for the many positions we place in the U.S. Inside, you’ll find the most accurate national and regional salary data combined with the insight you need to recruit, retain and pay employees at all levels — and to measure the success of your efforts. We hope it gives you a new perspective on people and their work.

Offer flexibility.25% OF EMPLOYEES HAVE H IGH LEVELS OF CONFL ICT BETWEEN WORK & FAMILY L I FE .

By offering flexible work hours and the option to work remotely, forward-thinking employers are making themselves more attractive to candidates who are seeking more balance.

Help them grow.39% OF EMPLOYEES DON’T FEEL THE IR COMPANY OFFERS SUFF ICI ENT INTERNAL CAREER OPPORTUNIT I ES.

You can overcome this by providing on-the-job training and/or reimbursing employees for continued education.

Recognize success.ONLY 24% OF EMPLOYEES ARE SAT ISF I ED WITH THE LEVEL OF RECOGNIT ION AT WORK.

Ensure that your people feel appreciated by setting up a peer-to-peer recognition program and offering rewards for top performers, such as certificates, cash or company merchandise.

Develop and promote a great culture.> Consider a policy that

encourages employees to take their vacation days

> Host family- and friend-inclusive events outside of work, and share photos on the company’s social media channels

> Determine if your company’s unique business or niche can help you offer any distinct employee perks that other companies can’t

Give a great interview. When you’re interviewing candidates, they’re also interviewing you — this is your chance to sell them on working for your company:

> Explain your company’s vision and purpose

> Share specific projects that could benefit from their talents

> Introduce them to potential future team members

> Describe the impact their position has on the company

Go beyond pay.Although job creation is on the rise, many companies are having trouble finding the right candidates. The employers that are most effectively attracting and retaining talent are those who offer more than a competitive salary — they offer a comprehensive employment package and ongoing investment in their employees’ careers. Here are a number of ways companies can differentiate themselves and become employers of choice.

Online recruiting. There are many ways to recruit online, and talent acquisition teams are beginning to partner more often with marketing departments to develop the best, most targeted plan possible. Before heading to the Internet to search for relevant candidates, remember that your strategy should take into account the position’s skill set and likely demographics (i.e., an entry-level accounting candidate will most likely be a Millennial and will probably be on LinkedIn).

Here are some common online recruiting tools:

SOCIAL RECRUIT ING Use social networks with advanced search options and professional/interest groups to source candidates.

D IG ITAL ADVERT IS ING Post ads for jobs to public and niche job boards, through search advertising campaigns, and on social networks.

INNOVATIVE JOB BOARDS

Online communities that gather professionals with niche skill sets are starting to offer targeted job boards.

V IRTUAL JOB FAIRS

Job fairs no longer require a 10x10 booth and company swag — many are being held online.

Tried and true methods can still work.Online recruiting tools are getting more use, and an increasing number of applications are driven through online methods. However, these new tactics don’t render old recruiting methods useless.

Many talent acquisition professionals still report success through in-person job fairs, taking out print ads in local or industry publications, and even grassroots marketing methods such as flyers, posters and street signs. It all depends on the types of candidates you’re recruiting.

Another old practice that’s still relevant is developing relationships with local colleges or universities known for programs in the fields your company needs. Research these educational institutions and reach out about getting involved with their career centers and partnering on internship programs.

Develop a multifaceted recruiting strategy.

While technology continues to change the recruiting process, successful talent acquisition professionals are using a mix of versatile recruiting methods.

Measure your effectiveness. No matter which of the many types of recruiting strategies and tactics you use, it’s important to know if they’re driving applications in the most efficient and cost effective way possible.

Why measure recruiting tactics and strategies?Consistently measuring the success of online advertising (e.g., LinkedIn ads, sponsored jobs on job boards like Indeed and search advertising) alongside print adver-tising (e.g., local paper classifieds and industry trade publications) will help you determine where you’re getting the most for your money and how to best allocate your recruiting budget.

How can I measure different types of strategies?Develop the key performance indicators that matter to you. This could include number of applications, the cost per application and the number of qualified applications. Work with your IT and marketing departments to develop ways to report on certain recruiting tactics and to ensure that their reporting ties back to your KPIs.

The good news is that measuring the true success of your recruiting tactics is always possible — even where it wasn’t before. For instance, when measuring print ad success, it was difficult to gather any information beyond how many readers a paper had and, in turn, how many impressions were estimated for your ad. Now you can include a specific URL or 800# which can track how many applications come from that specific channel.

About the salaries in this guide.

Where do we get our data? Our current, comprehensive salary figures are based on research conducted by CareerBliss, a career community dedicated to helping people find happiness in the work-place and in life. The data reflects information submitted by both employers and job seekers, and all submissions are thoroughly vetted and verified.

The salary figures reflect typical cash compensation for an individual’s job based on location, experience, education, certifications and company size. Salaries for your positions may be further influenced by benefits offered, local supply and demand trends and other considerations. The data in our guide represents average base salary only.

Get the most accurate salary data for your local job market. The cost of top talent can vary from region to region, and even from city to city. So to give you the most accurate salary insight for your local area, the chart on the next page provides variance information for 78 key markets.

How to calculate variances. The variance percentage will help you determine accurate salary ranges for your specific area. Here’s how it works:

+ I F THE VAR IANCE PERCENTAGE FOR YOUR AREA

IS A POSIT IVE NUMBER , add it to both the low and high regional averages on the salary chart.

For example: The salary range for a Customer Service Representative in a small company in the Northeast is $27,640 – $41,854. Your business is in Boston, MA, where the variance is +12.07%.

Use the following calculation: $27,640 + 12.07% ( of $27,640 ) = $30,976 $41,854 + 12.07% ( of $41,854 ) = $46,906

The salary range for a Customer Service Representative at a small-sized company in Boston, MA, is $30,976 – $46,906.

– I F THE VAR IANCE PERCENTAGE FOR YOUR AREA

IS A NEGATIVE NUMBER , subtract it from both the low and high regional averages on the salary chart.

For example: The salary range for a Maintenance Worker in a medium-sized company in the West is $27,236 – $45,034. Your business is in Fresno, CA, where the variance is –7.18%.

Use the following calculation: $27,236 – 7.18% ( of $27,236 ) = $25,280 $45,034 – 7.18% ( of $45,034) = $41,801

The salary range for a Maintenance Worker at a medium-sized company in Fresno, CA, is $25,280 – $41,801.
