LESSON 1: Curriculum Innovations: Local and Global Trends

TAKE AN ATION

Now, let us do some activities that would supplement or complement what we

have learned in the previous presentations. You may do the activities alone in group.

Activity 1 – Search for innovations

1. Go to the school library or the internet station to find an additional

curriculum innovation.

The curriculum may be viewed as “planned learning opportunities” which

are converted into “actual learning experiences” through instruction.

Instruction may be referred to as the implementation of the curriculum. We

view curriculum innovation as encompassing all kinds of innovation in

education whether they are innovations of structure, content, or process,

or whether they are innovations of some other classificatory scheme, on

the ground that any or a combination of two or more of these innovations

in education ultimately can or will affect or influence the planned learning

experiences (curriculum) as implemented through instruction.

The word “innovation” is often used to describe solutions to problems

which represent a change or departure from current practice as opposed

to progressive improvements within an existing framework (Klaus, 1969).

The term has also be defined as “the introduction of something new” and

as “a new idea, method, or device” (Miriam Webster’s Desk Dictionary,

1995).

We considered curriculum innovation both as a product in the form of a

new idea, method, device, arrangement, or technology, and as a process,

since it involves planning, organizing, implementing, and controlling of

resources and activities, as well as evaluating procedures outcomes, all of

which are focused on desired end – that of promoting the best interests of

the school’ educational program.

2. Make a description of it and share with you class.

Page 2: Addressing the Future: Curriculum Innovation

The curriculum innovation is about “something new” or “a new idea,

method, or device” if we continue to develop the curriculum innovation in

the Philippines, our country can get a high quality education so that the

student can compete other country.

Activity 2 – BEC, How is it going?

1. With your group, design an interview protocol regarding the implementation of

the Basic Education curriculum.

2. Request for an interview schedule of an elementary or high school teacher.

3. Record you interview.

4. Share the results in your and place a copy in your portfolio.

5. You may include the following questions in your interview protocol.

1. In the subject area you are teaching with portion of the Basic Education

Curriculum are you exited to implement? Why?

Yes, because the Basic Education Curriculum decongested the overcrowded

the old curriculum into five learning areas namely English, Mathematics,

Science, Filipino, and Aralin Panlipunan. The first three subject areas will

develop internationalism, while the last two learning areas will develop

Filipinism.

2. Do you find the content of the curriculum relevant to the needs of time? Give

specific example?

Yes, how to use a sample of layout or making news.

3. What do find something “new” in the BEC particularly in the subject you are

teaching? Pleas enumerate.

4. Are the things (objectives, contents, materials activities, assessment) which

you modified in the curriculum? Why?

The things that stated above (objectives, contents, materials activities,

assessment) are all modified in my lesson plan because I make a brief lesson

plan and I make sure that this is modified and appropriate.

REFLECT

Read the situation and think about these questions. Give you personal question

reflection based on the current and future condition of our education.

Situation:

Teacher Pilar is one of the best in their school. She has been a Grade VI teacher

for almost thirty years. Parents and her peers are all agreed that she make almost all

children learn. She has been a very good teacher in almost subject areas, though she

likes to teach best Science. When a new principal Mr. Perez came, he introduced an

innovation which is the use of technology. All school children in intermediate teachers

and Teacher Pilar was one of them. With the new assignment, she felt frustrated. She

felt it was a heavy burden on her to use the technology, though the children were all

exited to learn. Because of her fear of something new which she could not handle, she

lost her motivation to teach day after day. She would absent herself from school more

often and neglected de obligation as a teacher. The best teacher before has now

become a liability to the school, because of an innovation.

Reflect on and answer the questions that follows:

1. If you were Teacher Pilar, how you handle the innovation so that you will still

the best teacher in your school?

If I were Teacher Pilar, in that situation I will manage or handle the new

innovation in a nice way, instead I will force myself to study how to use the

computer so that I will not afraid to go to school so that all the school in

intermediate grades will learn to use the computer by sharing what I’ve been

learned. For me to remain myself as the best teacher in our school.

2. As the new principal, how would you respond to the situation such that you

still continue to introduce the innovation and yet save Teacher Pilar from all

frustration and anxiety?

I will explain to Teacher Pilar what is the innovation is and for that I will teach

her how to use the computer so that she would not afraid to enter in her

school or classroom.

3. What lesson do you get from the situation given above?

The lesson that I get in the given situation above is don’t be afraid in the

innovation of curriculum instead learned how to use it.
