For several decades our congregation and the community of Cumberland enjoyed hear- ing those bells each day. Unfortunately, the carillon that served us well for so many years no longer works. And due to the age of the instrument and to the technology that is no longer used (the technology of the carillon is similar to that of a player piano), it can no longer be fixed. With that reality in mind, and with a desire to have the playing of the bells continue, a new carillon system is being proposed to the congregation. This would be a completely new digital system and set of speakers. It would have a much expanded selection of hymns as well as a much more versatile scheduling feature. Being fully digital, the sound would also be much crisper and clearer. The total cost of the project is approximately $10,000. Half of that has already been pledged by a generous donor. Sunday, October 27th is Reformation Sunday,

the day that we remember the work of Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformers. The church color of the day is red to symbolize the presence of the Holy Spirit. Many people also wear red to worship that day to help

celebrate.

FROM THE PASTOR’S STUDY

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us.” Hebrews 12:1

While we were in Germany, one of my favorite places to go on my bike was a little place called Wittichen. Wittichen is a tiny settlement nestled into one of the Black Forest valleys about ten miles from Schiltach. And what Wittichen is known for is a medieval cloister that was founded there in the 1300’s by a woman named Luitgard. Wittichen was founded as a house for nuns who lived in that place for almost 500 years. Much of the cloister was destroyed in the 1600’s, but two of its main buildings still survive: the church – which served both the monastery and the surrounding community – and one of the main resident quarters.

This is, of course, one of my favorite things about being able to spend time in Germany. They just have a much longer church history than we do in the United States. I can get on my bicycle and peddle for just a little while and go visit a church that has been standing for almost 700 years. That is just not something that we can do in our country.

And I remember a couple of times getting up early and riding my bike up to Wittichen. I would get up there and there would be nobody else around. I truly had the place to myself. So I would go into the church and have some time to reflect. And I would think about the great tradition of faith that surrounded me. I would think of the number of generations who had worshiped within those walls. I would think of the number of times that Christmas was celebrated – or Christ’s resurrection at Easter. I would think of the people who had been baptized in that church and who had been buried in it. When you are sitting in a church with that kind of history – the great cloud of witnesses that surrounds us in the faith seems very real.

I have always had a strong interest in the history of the Christian Church, and I suppose that is one of the reasons that I enjoyed our time in Germany so very much. There is so much history and tradition all around you in that country.

But one of the wonderful things about not only going to Germany as a tourist and visiting the old churches, but in being a part of a community and a congregation, is that you not only get to see the great heritage of the Christian faith, but you also get to see how that faith is alive and well and lived out today.

In Schiltach, Germany, where I served as pastor for six weeks, it was wonderful to see how the congregation – housed in a large, historic church of its own, is vibrant and active in serving its community. There are many music programs and several programs for youth and children. There are active Bible study groups, men’s and women’s fellowship and many concerts and events in the congregation. In Schiltach they even have a “Bible experience walking path” that uses one of the Black Forest hiking trails and fills it with biblical sculptures and stories. The Christian Church in Schiltach is alive and well.

Wherever we are as Christians – if it is in America or in Europe or someplace else – we both try to honor our heritage and also look to the future. And sometimes this is not al-ways an easy balancing act. But the great heritage of faith that has been passed down to us inspires us to remain faithful and to meet the challenges and opportunities that we face today in following Christ.

Thank you again for this wonderful opportunity to participate with the Glimpel family in this pastoral exchange. I feel it has been an enriching and growing experience for both fami-lies and for both congregations.

God Bless,

Coffee and Treats

The 2012 treats list is ready for volunteers. Please sign up for a special Sunday. The coffee and treat time is a special time for members to meet new people and greet old friends. Sign up sheets are in Fellowship Hallway.

Simply Giving: Earlier this year we heard a Temple Talk

about the Simply Giving Program: a way to make donations to the ministry of First Lutheran through automatic withdrawls from a bank account: If you are interested, there are forms available on the table in the fellowship hall. Please fill out the form and return to the church office. Here is the information about Simply Giv-ing:

What is Simply Giving? It is a program that allows individuals to make electronic transfer contributions to the congregations from a bank account.

What are the advantages? For the individual or household, it allows them to make regular, consistent gifts throughout the year, and to keep track of them through bank records. For the congregation, it helps to make giving a little more predictable for planning and budgeting purposes.

How does it work? Simply fill out the form and include a cancelled check. Gifts can be given monthly, bi-monthly or weekly. Gifts can also be designated for “General Fund,” “Building” or “Missions.”

Is it safe? Yes. Simply Giving has been used by thousands of individuals and congregations for well over ten years.

Can you make changes or cancel Simply Giving? Yes, just let the church office know and fill out the same, simple form.

What about giving statements? A weekly email is sent to the church with all the gifts made through Simply Giving. These are then recorded in the church files like any other gift. Reg-ular giving statements are then sent like always.

What about offering collection on Sunday morning? You still have your weekly offering envelopes. You can just write: “Simply Giving” on them and put them in the offering plate.

Do you have a bountiful garden? Zucchini? Tomatoes? Cukes? Green Peppers? If you have an overflowing garden, you may want to share produce with others at First Lutheran during the month of October. We have set up a table/box to collect and share produce in the Fellowship Hall. You may find something from the gardens of others that you can use in your kitch-en. Produce that is not picked up on Sunday will be taken to the Cumberland Senior Center for their use on Monday. So, bring in your surplus vegetables every Sunday in October. If you don’t have a garden, simply stop by the table to pick up vegetables that you can use. Help yourself to the Garden Sharing Table. It is hard to beat the fresh flavor of garden vegetables.

A Special Fun Night of Music: Do you remember

back to Saturday afternoons watching those classic cowboy shows and movies on TV? Do you remember all of the great music that went with those shows – classics by Roy Rogers, Sons of the Pioneers, Gene Autry and others? If so, come and join us for a fun night of music featuring cowboy songs and some western-style hymns. The concert and sing-a-long will be Sunday, October 20th at 6:30pm. Stay as well for some special-themed treats afterwards.

Women’s Bible/ Book Study, October 17th, 7:00 PM

Join a group of women from First Lutheran to study the Bible and enjoy the fellowship. This first meeting will be a Planning Meet-ing—the first gathering will be November 7th.

Community Dinner October 27, 11:00 - 2:00 PM American Legion Clubhouse

Many of our local churches and civic organizations are sponsoring a beef stew meal for $8.00. The proceeds will go to Barron County to support the Meals on Wheels program and lunches at the Senior Center. There have been some drastic monetary cuts in their programs so we need your support. Join us for a meal of great beef stew, biscuits, jello salad and homemade pies at the American Legion, Oct. 27th.

On September 15th, Morgan Elizabeth Swart, daughter of Nicole White & Jason Swart was welcomed into God’s family through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. The baptism took place during the 8:30 AM Service. We rejoice with Averiella

and her family on the occasion of her baptism.

On September 22nd, Reed Thomas Scheller, son of Casey & Amanda Scheller was welcomed into God’s family through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. The baptism took place during the 10:30 AM Service. We rejoice with Reed and his family on the occasion of his baptism.

On September 29th, Riley Loren Majewski, daughter of Lorne & Tanya Majewski was welcomed into God’s family through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. The baptism took place during the 10:30 AM Service. We rejoice with Riley and her family on the occasion of her baptism.

All Saints Sunday, November 3rd On November 3rd, we will celebrate All Saints Sunday, the day we remember those who have gone before us in the faith into the church triumphant. If you would like someone remembered who has died in the last year, who was not a member of our church, please call Dawn in the church office before October 31st.

Come out and enjoy the fall beauty of Northwest Wisconsin

We will have a family hike on Saturday, October 12th. This will be a short hike on the Ice Age Trail to get out and enjoy the beauty of God’s creation. We will meet at the church at 2PM and then drive over together. The hike is about 2 miles total and is relatively flat. After we are done hiking we will go to the Hilltop Restaurant together to enjoy some fellowship. Sign up for a hike and dinner in the Fellowship Hall.

Well Done, Good and Faithful Servants: This

past year has seen some changes with the women’s group in our congregation. The Women of the ELCA group is no longer meeting in the same way and a few of our women’s circles have decided that it is time to bring their time to an end. As members age and it is increasingly difficult to meet, these changes became necessary. As a congrega-tion, this time of transition gives us an opportunity to thank these faithful women for all of their work and service to our congregation over the years. On Sunday, October 13th, we will remember the work of the women in our congrega-tion over the years. Appropriately, this will also be the day that the relief quilts are placed on the church pews. That morning, we will also receive a special offering for the on-going work of the women in our congregation. Among oth-er things, the women of the church will continue to sponsor new Bibles for pre-k students and Study Bibles for 3rd graders. They will continue to provide scholarships to Bi-ble Camp and mission help through programs like the Benjamin’s House Homeless Shelter. Please join us on Oct. 13th as we say “thank you” for many years of faithful service by our church women.

The Glimpels receiving a quilt from First Lutheran. Jen Flottum created the quilt and as many members as were available wrote notes and signed it. A lovely memento to carry back to Germany.

Congratulations to Mindy & James Anderson on their wedding, September 14, 2013. God’s Blessings!

Meals at the Benjamin’s House Homeless Shelter in Rice Lake. Many of you are aware that the Benjamin’s

House Homeless Shelter in Rice Lake is the only homeless shelter in Barron County. And many of you know as well that the Benjamin’s House is a mission partner of First Lutheran. Over the last several years we have been able to make several contributions to Benjamin’s House as they carry out their mission of serving the homeless in our community. Another way that we partner with the work of the Benjamin’s House is that we serve a meal there once a month. We will be serving meals there on Oct. 10th, Nov. 14th and Dec. 12th. As of right now, we have volunteers for the Oct. and Nov. meals and the youth of First Lutheran are scheduled to serve in December. If you would like to be involved with future meals, please call the church office and thank you to everyone who has helped with these meals. As of this fall, Pastor Tim will also be serving on the Board of Directors for Benjamin’s House. He will serve for the next three years.

Grounds Beautification Update: So many people have enjoyed the improvements to our church grounds over the

last few years. The addition of sidewalks, benches, trees, a picnic area and new fire-ring space have welcomed in the community and enhanced our ministry at First Lutheran. Just about every day you will see people walking the paths and enjoying the grounds. After many years of hard work and many generous donations, the project is nearing completion. There is one final stretch of sidewalk that will run from the playground area to the north, and there are a few more benches and trees that will be placed. Thank you to everyone who has given gifts to this very worthwhile project, and a special thank you to the Grounds Beautification Committee for all of their hard work. The members of this group are: Beth Cunningham, David Grove, Bobbi Momchilovich and Pastor Tim.
