Company Overview

Feeney, Inc. is a leading manufacturer of high quality cable railing assemblies, aluminum railings, and other architectural solutions for residential and commercial projects, as well as wire rope and rigging products for industrial uses. The family-owned and operated business has offices in Oakland, California; Eugene, Oregon; Watertown, Massachusetts; and Holbrook, New York.

Residential and commercial builders, architects, and property owners have welcomed Feeney’s stainless steel cable assemblies and other attractive, durable, and easy-to-use design solutions. Popular brands include CableRail railing infill cables, DesignRail® aluminum railing systems and Trellis Collection freestanding and wall mounted cable and rod trellis kits. The company is also the exclusive distributor of easy-to-install Sta-Lok® stainless steel rod assemblies.

A Heritage of InnovationFeeney is proud of its heritage, rich in innovation, quality craftsmanship, and customer service. In 1948, Jim Feeney opened the doors of Feeney Wire Rope & Rigging in an old soap factory building located on the edge of San Francisco Bay in Berkeley, Calif. The post-War, San Francisco Bay Area was booming with military, maritime, and construction business, and Feeney quickly gained a solid reputation as a company that provided quality rigging products and superior service. With hard work, a dedicated staff, and an expanding list of satisfied customers, Feeney soon grew to become one of the leading suppliers of custom rigging and hardware in the region, and this position still holds true today.

In 1979, the Ralston family purchased the company. With an eye toward the future and an enthusiastic, forward-thinking approach to business, the Ralstons were able to incorporate new ideas and new products into the company’s offerings that allowed them to expand into new markets beyond traditional industrial rigging.

The CableRail line of architectural cables and fittings was first introduced in 1988 in response to a growing interest by architects and builders for modern, unobtrusive railing infill products. The following year, Feeney simplified the product line by introducing CableRail Standard Assemblies. These prefabricated cable assemblies are designed to be sold in standardized lengths that can be trimmed to exact size in the field, incorporating Feeney’s patented, automatic-locking Quick-Connect® fitting. These assemblies are simple to understand, easy-to-use, economical, and beautiful. Practically invisible by design, this approach to railing infill is perfect for projects with a view, and its popularity continues to grow as the product line continuously evolves to meet market needs.

Overview

Almost a decade later, Feeney expanded its operations and opened a facility in Eugene to develop a new addition to the Feeney architectural line, aluminum railing frame systems. In addition to CableRail cables, the company was now able to offer a complete railing system with cable, glass panels, or picket infill options. The railings were first introduced under the CableRail brand but are now marketed under their own brand, DesignRail®.

Today, Feeney, Inc. continues its commitment to delivering high quality products and superior service. Its newest manufacturing facility features a state-of-the-art, fully automated, computerized machining center that can operate 24/7. This technology helps them control quality, manage inventories, improve production, and develop new products.

FEENEY, INC. DEBUTS CABLERAIL CONCEAL KITNew kit offers a low-profile option to brand’s popular CableRail product line

OAKLAND, Calif. – Jan. 9, 2018 – Feeney, Inc., a leading manufacturer of high quality stainless steel and aluminum railing systems, will introduce at the International Builders’ Show (IBS) in Orlando a new, low-profile version of its CableRail kits.

The CableRail Conceal Kit was developed to provide a solution for customers seeking a more streamlined cable railing aesthetic. The end caps on the outside of the railing posts are thinner, and the fittings are shorter in length so they can be completely concealed inside the post for a sleeker look.

“The Conceal Kit offers a fresh new twist on our popular CableRail system, while providing an a dditional option for DesignRail® and wood railing projects,” said Andy Penny, vice president of sales and marketing for Feeney. “We understand that design preferences vary. This new offering will give our customers even more flexibility when selecting the CableRail kit best suited for their specific application.”

Engineered for easy installation, the CableRail Conceal Kit features a specially-designed tension fitting on one end and an automatic-locking Feeney Quick-Connect® fitting on the other end. The kit is available in pre-fabricated assembly lengths ranging from 5 feet to 50 feet (in 5 foot increments) that can be trimmed to exact length in the field. Product accessories, including isolation bushings for harsher environments and decorative stainless or colored end caps, are also available and sold separately.

The new kit will be on display in the Feeney booth (#W7543) during IBS. For more information on all of Feeney’s offerings, visit www.feeneyinc.com.

FEENEY, INC. TAKES FIRST PLACE IN NADRA DECK COMPETITION FOR SECOND YEAR IN A ROWCable railing provider takes home top honors in manufacturer category

OAKLAND, Calif. – Jan. 9, 2018 – For the second consecutive year, Feeney, Inc. has been awarded first place in the Manufacturer Project category of the 2017 National Deck Competition. Feeney won for its deck railing on a Connecticut home designed to emulate the look of a boat. The awards, which are hosted each year by the North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA), were presented last month at the 2017 Remodeling Show/Deck Expo held in Nashville.

“NADRA is proud to have Feeney as part of its membership roster. The winning project sets the bar high in creativity through the unique and distinctive architectural design, which incorporates multi-level decks throughout the home,” said Mike Beaudry, executive vice president of NADRA.

The “Boat House”, which overlooks the Niantic River in Waterford, Connecticut, utilized Feeney’s DesignRail® aluminum railing with stainless steel CableRail infill for the deck railings, highlighted with Feeney LED Rail Lighting under the top rail. An ipe wood top rail was used to create a more authentic boat look while also matching the decking for a seamless appearance. Feeney worked very closely with the general contractor, Jonathan Laschever of Laschever Building Company LLC, and others to create a railing solution that accentuated the unconventional shape of the home, including the curved bow at the top – one of the standouts of the design.

“The Boat House project was truly a work of art created by the home’s owner and Jonathan Laschever, and Feeney was honored to be involved,” said Andrew Penny, vice president of marketing and advertising, Feeney, Inc., a leading manufacturer of high quality stainless steel and aluminum railing systems. “We regularly receive photos of decks featuring our DesignRail® and CableRail railing products, and it is exciting to see the beautiful and creative spaces in which the railings are used. We are proud to be recognized by NADRA with such an important award.”

Projects featuring Feeney cable railing also garnered five additional awards. The projects, all designed by Decks by Kiefer in Martinsville, New Jersey, took Overall First Place honors along with First Place in Wood Decks from $25K - $50K, Second Place in Wood Decks Over $50K, and First and Second Place in the Open Porches category.

FEENEY, INC. SUPPORTS TRAVIS MILLS FOUNDATION’S NEW RETREAT CENTER FOR VETERAN FAMILIES Donates CableRail products to preserve scenic lake view for retreat visitors

OAKLAND, Calif. – Jan. 9, 2018 – Feeney, Inc., a leading manufacturer of high quality stainless steel and aluminum railing systems, has provided The Travis Mills Foundation with CableRail products for the waterfront cottage at the foundation’s recently opened 11,000 square foot retreat center in Maine. Nestled on 17 acres on a lake in Hallowell, Maine, the Travis Mills Foundation Veterans Retreat offers an all-inclusive, all paid place of rest and relaxation for America’s military families, including access to water and land recreational activities along with onsite spa services.

“Our foundation is fortunate to have partnered with Feeney for the waterfront cottage at our national retreat center. America’s military families sacrifice so much so that we may all live free, and we’re honored that Feeney would work with us to provide for our retreat,” said U.S. Army SSG (Ret.) Travis Mills, president and founder of the Travis Mills Foundation.

“The best part is that Feeney’s cable railing provides visibility for those veterans who are wheelchair bound to still enjoy scenic views of the lake, while also providing a durable product that we’ll be able to rely on for years to come,” added Mills.

Mills founded the non-profit organization in 2013 to help combat injured veterans overcome physical obstacles and strengthen their families while also offering much needed rest and relaxation. In 2015, with the aim of providing a place where veterans and their family members could return together to an active lifestyle, the foundation purchased the Maine property. Since opening its doors in June 2017, the retreat center has welcomed more than 54 military families – and plans to host families for at least 40 weeks each year.

“We would have never been able to provide such an amazing experience for our veterans at our waterfront cottage this year without Feeney’s support,” said Brandy Cain, lead gift officer for the Travis Mills Foundation. Their easy-to-use products made installation a breeze, which kept our contractors right on schedule. I’ll forever be grateful that they believe in and support our veterans – including us at the Travis Mills Foundation.”

OAKLAND, Calif. – Jan. 9, 2018 – Feeney, Inc., a leading manufacturer of high quality stainless steel and aluminum railing systems, has added to its line a new CableRail Stair Assembly, a pre-packaged kit of materials and fittings created to streamline installation of CableRail on stair railings. Specially designed for wood posts, the CableRail Stair Assembly package includes 20 feet of 1/8-inch diameter stainless steel cable with a Threaded Terminal Fitting attached to one end, a Quick-Connect® Pivot Fitting for the other end, and necessary nuts and washers. The Threaded Terminal end for the bottom stair post uses a beveled washer and special washer-nut for easy cable tensioning, while the Quick-Connect® Pivot Fitting enables convenient attachment of CableRail to the face of a wall or post at the top of a stair, especially beneficial in cases where limited access exists behind posts.

FEENEY, INC. INTRODUCES NEW CABLERAIL STAIR ASSEMBLY AND TENSIONING TOOL

OAKLAND, Calif. – Jan. 9, 2018 – Feeney, Inc., a leading manufacturer of high quality stainless steel and aluminum railing systems, announces two additions to the Feeney, Inc. product line that will debut at the 2017 International Builders’ Show in Orlando, Florida, Jan. 10-12. The CableRail Stair Assembly and CableRail Tensioning Tool, were created to ease the installation process for builders, contractors, and installers using Feeney, Inc. products. The CableRail Stair Assembly, a pre-packaged kit of materials and fittings, offers an easy-to-use option for installing CableRail on stair railings. The package includes 1/8-inch cable with a Threaded Terminal Fitting attached to one end, a Quick-Connect® Pivot Fitting for the other end, and all of the necessary nuts and washers. The new Tensioning Tool, which works with a wide variety of post materials, allows installers to tension CableRail with minimal effort, and allows for increased tensioning, which in turn optimizes cable length. “As homeowners increasingly invest in their exterior living spaces, the demand for easy-to-install building materials and innovative installation tools has increased,” says Andy Penny, vice president of marketing and advertising. “Feeney’s new CableRail Stair Assembly and CableRail Tensioning Tool are two products that will significantly aid in installation, and augment efficiency for installers, while maintaining the aesthetic appeal and dependability of Feeney’s product line.” Feeney, Inc.’s CableRail Stair Assembly can be added to current retail POP displays alongside the best-selling standard assemblies and is available in a convenient 20-ft. length that can be cut to size for a variety of projects. The Threaded Terminal end for the bottom stair post ensures easy cable tensioning using a beveled washer and special washer-nut, while the Quick-Connect® Pivot Fitting allows easy attachment to the face of a wall or post at the top of a stair, perfect when there is limited access behind posts. Additionally, the Quick-Connect® Pivot Fitting is quickly installed using a hanger bolt, requiring no angled drill holes, and features Feeney’s Quick-Connect® automatic-locking-jaw technology, thus shortening installation time and minimizing the chance of error. Proper cable tensioning for long-term performance is an important part of CableRail installation. This factor was one of the primary reasons for Feeney, Inc.’s new Tensioning Tool. The innovative tool is used on the Quick-Connect®SS Fitting end to maximize tension by efficiently pulling cable through the fitting. This reduces the need for additional tensioning at the Threaded Terminal end, leaving more thread for any future adjustments. It can be used on 1/8-inch diameter stainless steel CableRail in a wide variety of post materials. An adapter for 3/16-inch and 1/4-inch cable is available as a separate accessory item. A built-in tension indicator ensures consistent tension is applied to the cable every time, optimizing ease of installation. The tool is compact, lightweight, and durable enough to withstand the conditions of any job site. For more information, visit www.feeneyinc.com.

A FACELIFT FOR THE USS ARIZONA MEMORIAL

With one of the most recognizable quotes in history, “December 7, 1941 – a date which will live in infamy,” Franklin D. Roosevelt brought the nation together in a time of despair and tragedy. The Pearl Harbor Memorial, comprised of the WWII Valor in the Pacific Monument; which includes the USS Arizona, USS Utah and USS Oklahoma memorials; Battleship Missouri Memorial; USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park; and the Pacific Aviation Museum recently celebrated its 75th anniversary by commemorating the 2,403 lives lost.

Gearing up for the big event, the USS Arizona Memorial underwent a renovation. More specifically, the Memorial’s exterior was one of the primary aspects of the project, including a new railing system. After undergoing a bidding process, Feeney, Inc., an Oakland, California-based company that specializes in manufacturing high quality stainless steel and aluminum railing products, was selected to assist.

“In the end, we chose Feeney’s DesignRail® railing for a variety of reasons, including its ability to provide a low visibility profile,” said Isobel Hertlein, an administrator for the Hawk Contracting Group, which was in charge of the project. “The railing doesn’t detract from the actual memorial, and it offers a safety barrier for practicality.”

Brad Adsit, LEED-AP, CSI-CDT and Feeney’s design and engineering manager, recommended the company’s DesignRail® aluminum railing with a clear anodized finish to help withstand both the high level of salt water exposure as well as humidity. “Since the USS Arizona Memorial is right on the water, we needed to be sure the materials selected were durable enough for the conditions and the climate,” said Adsit. For the railing’s infill, Feeney’s stainless steel CableRail was chosen for its durability in harsh conditions as well as its ability to provide open, unimpeded views through the railing.

Since the DesignRail® railing frame is constructed from aluminum and the CableRail infill cables are stainless steel, it was important to keep the different metals from touching, so Feeney supplied isolation bushings to line the inside of the drilled post holes where the cables passed through. According to Adsit, this is an important “best practice” for projects located in areas with heavy salt water exposure. “Dissimilar metals combined with salt water can cause electrolysis, which in turn, can create a battery-acid like secretion that can stain and etch the aluminum posts,” he said.

Feeney also provided high-density neoprene isolation pads to protect the aluminum post base plates from any corrosion that might be experienced due to salt water exposure between the concrete deck surface and the base plate.

Case Study

In addition, the railing system had to be compliant with the American Disabilities Act as well as endure high volumes of traffic. “The advantage of Feeney’s DesignRail® with CableRail infill is that it’s very durable and requires minimal maintenance, making it perfect for the extensive daily wear and tear,” Adsit explained.

As visitors arrive at the USS Arizona site by boat, they disembark onto the new dock and walk across the new access ramp and bridge to the Memorial and viewing area. The railing funnels visitors towards the bridge and also prevents them from being in close proximity to the edge of the dock. “For safety reasons, an upgraded railing system was a must-have,” says Hertlein. “The original design of the renovated railing system would not have been able to stop small children or adults from crawling under the access bridge into the non-public area of the Memorial. However, we recommended a more secure railing design to the National Park Service for added safety measures.”

Another interesting detail on the USS Arizona renovation project is that Feeney worked with a supplier of specialty sliding gate hardware and aluminum extrusions to create a custom horizontal sliding gate. According to Hertlein, the gate was purposely designed to allow authorized personnel to access the back side of the dock, underside of the bridge and ramp area as well as a small Davit lift for general maintenance purposes.

An additional, notable element is on the post located immediately adjacent to the “building” entrance. The piece was custom fabricated to match the slope of the exterior wall. “Due to safety concerns, this particular section of the railing system needed to bridge the gap between the walkway and the memorial,” said Adsit. When manufacturing the piece, we had to pay special attention to detail.” The bottom of the post needed to be cut at the necessary angle and attached to the base plate so it would run parallel to the memorial wall. Feeney also had to make sure the adjacent post was longer because it sits on a lower portion of concrete. Finally, the tops of the posts, the holes for the cables and top rail all had to align once the posts were set in place.

The project wasn’t without its challenges. The Memorial was closed for the 14-day renovation period, so coordination and execution was very tight. “All crew members and building materials had to be shipped from the mainland by barge,” explains Hertlein. “We also encountered last-minute changes in the overall design, as required by the National Park Service, but in the end we were able to complete the project and reopen the site on time.”

The USS Arizona Memorial overlooks the sunken ship, and the museum serves as a reminder of a pivotal moment in U.S. history not to be forgotten.
